Portal thoughts from nursing home

Ideas for discussion. disclaimer: I am old and have zero college foot ball coaching experience.

1 I would be more enthused if CDS had saved some ships and used them on 3 stars with experience instead of fallbacks (if that is what they are?).

2 It baffles me why basketball, baseball and softball can bring in players without destroying the locker room or culture.

3 Why not tell recruits you can come in and compete and, if you beat out recruits, you start.

4 Finally, are all of the assumptions about portal simply ghosts?

I think Dabo prefers giving players who originally signed to Clemson over a transfer because he looks at those as being most loyal. I also posted on another thread how Clemson wants to build a relationship between them and the prospect to verify that they are a good fit. The problem with that is the process is slow and most transfers are pretty quick to make a decision. Lastly, I think pride gets in the way of Dabo. As much as I love him as a coach, he tends to stick to his guns about some things to a fault. Yes he has had 2 transfers that he used as GAs, but to me that doesn’t count. Pearman is laughing to the bank every pay day.

I understand his reasons but it begs the question is working in the 2024? I am NOT being critical of CDS, I just asking questions. As I said I am not a coach and very old - but I am a CU grad and enjoy(ed) watching Tigers play and win.

Dabo offered at least three offensive linemen last year that we know of and they all went elsewhere. I'm sure he will offer at least a few others this year, but that doesn't mean we will land them just like we didn't land most of the guys we wanted in this years recruiting class. Not sure how it's Dabos fault if he offers a portal guy x number of dollars but they choose to go to Ohio State for twice that amount, and anyone who thinks we have the resources to match these big spending programs on these portal offers is living in an alternate reality.

1. Our late recruiting cycle takes these past few years have delivered some home runs. Antonio Williams, Tyler Brown, Kahlil Barnes - all late takes. Lawson at DE with another year in could be a beast. We offer the fewest overall by a good measure, but scout and keep relationships with many others in the wings due to that. If we're holding a last spot or so for something else - think of these guys.

2. Those other programs don't have a number like 85 players, soon to be 105, to contend with and keep ready and active to take a field. 22 > 9 > 5. Roster dynamics are just different when you need 55-60 Dudes to lead your team to success throughout a season. In hoops, if someone wanted today, they could simply purchase a Fab 5 plus some filler and make history. Retention is another thing. When you keep the majority of recruits, redshirt, grow, develop, graduate, etc. that Dabo does with football, where are the openings?

3. That's probably their message today. Last year we had the biggest freshman snap total in CFB. And it wasn't even that big of a class.

4. Assume at your own risk.

Go Tigers!

Interesting points! I agree, using resources wisely (like experienced 3-stars) could be impactful. The dynamics in other sports compared to football are intriguing—maybe it’s about managing egos differently. Letting recruits compete for their spot seems fair and motivating. As for the portal, assumptions might be overblown—it’s worth reevaluating its real impact.
