Portal committments.

Very few guys in the portal have committed yet.
I'm wondering if coaches are asking kids not to openly declare they are coming to his school until after signing day. Are the coaches thinking, "I don't want this big name portal guy to tell anyone he's coming here because it may scare off the big time recruit at his position who is also committed to come here."

I was thinking the same thing, Bret. I was thinking they were asking kids to wait so it doesn't affect the incoming the recruiting class.

probably not the best time. I imagine you'll see more commitments as teams finish their seasons. Just my guess. What do I know....

The one thing that T-netters do a good job of doing especial for the kids that we recruit, is to put questions in their head that probably wasn't there until they read about it on T-Net....

Kyler Morlock just announced his committment.

TE from Shorter College. He just anno9unced he's going to FSU. That gives FSU two of the top 3 or 4 TE in the portal.
Seems like he is just contradicting my thoughts in the original post in this thread. Noles have two big time TEs from the portal.
But, FSU was extremely weak at TE this year. The general consensus was there were 7 TE on the roster and none of them are any good. Everybody knew they needed immediate help and getting a TE or 2 from the portal was a high priority for them. If they are recruiting a HS TE (I don't know that they are) they would have made it very clear that they were looking to bring in guys who would be higher on the depth chart than any HS recruit. So, signing these two guys probably didn't scare anyone off.

What do you get when you combine Matlock with a Warlock? bretfsu® I will admit this kid could be old-school crafty and diabolical on the field. Another good FSU catch - job well done!

I get what you are saying but in this time of, "Let the players have what the players want", why would post signing day keep any kid from lawyering up and getting out of the signed intent? Easy come, easy go nowadays.

I think the portal rules allow....

...a HS kid to sign with a college in Dec or Feb, then change his mind and hit the portal in the next window (May?). So a kid could sign with a school and then enter the portal before ever setting foot on campus.

I would guess that's about right.
Nobody regulating this thing; so it's the wild wild west days of "The Portal"!
There is a happy medium w/o all this "hoo-n-nanny"!

Couldn't early enrollee freshmen go into the portal in May, after they see where they stand in spring practice.
Heck, I know there's a rule about under grads having to sit out a redshirt year on their second transfer, but what's stopping portal entrants from entering the portal again in May? The NCAA - LOL They have no balls.

Why do you think there are so many players in the Portal? Only 11 people can play on any play. Big time recruits will not sit on the bench when they know they can go somewhere else the next season. Recruiting is just flat out hard.

So, if the intent is to transfer to new school in time to begin the spring semester they will have to commit by the end of the year or very early January (January 10th at Clemson since classes start January 11th). Since the early signees may see a transfer commitment at their position before classes start, how long will it take recruits to start waiting for the February signing date? They still have time to commit elsewhere. Sooner or later the high school commits will figure it out and stop signing in December.
The other problem would be those pissed that a transfer takes their place and immediately plan on transferring in May. You reckon that's one of the reasons Dabo is slow playing transfers?
Until the NCAA stops this unrestriced free agency and requires a high school signee or s transfer in to stay at a school for 2 years before they can transfer out (coaching change or graduation only exceptions), this crap is only going to get worse.

This issue will be much easier to manage once all of the kids in the portal and all of the incoming freshmen have agents. These agencies will arrange the NIL‘s for the student athletes and take their own cut. They will be able to bring package deals to teams and to players. We are only beginning the levels of ridiculousness that will eventually come into being.

FSU been feasting on the portal last couple of years. Notice they once again getting some good players from the portal. Will this have a negative or positive effect on building a program.

Good players are good players, no matter where you get them. And it doesn’t matter if you get them through the portal or right out of high school. What matters is that you get the best players.
Justin Fields and Trey Sermon are portal players who did not adversely affect program development at Ohio State. they arrived and lifted Ohio State to a level that they could beat a team Clemson that had beaten them every chance for the past decade
