it is a separate account with different username, like a ghost account, where the person can login as both their real username and as their scok username. That way they can upvote their real posts and degrade another poster using the scok.
I believe scoks can be easily determined by tracing IP addresses. However, that may not work if the scok uses a VPN to login.
I hope that makes sense.

The story I've heard is that someone meant to refer to these profiles as "sock puppets" but misspelled sock...and the rest is history.
