Looking at places we've not been
Portugal Belgium Switzerland
We're not big on highly structured and rigid vacation tour type vacations, but looking for a trustworthy tour company that fits into this? Any help or experience-based advice appreciated.

We’ve done each of those countries without a tour guide. Loved them all differently. If no tour, I’d recommend Portugal or Switzerland.
If doing a tour, Belgium might be easiest. They can visit the main cities in Belgium and Netherlands, and maybe squeeze in Paris or Luxembourg depending on length of trip.
If your budget affords it, have you considered a Europe river cruise?
Congrats on 40 years.

What kind of tours are you expecting? Ones where they drive you to destination to destination, or shorter tours?
My family will occasionally book a walking tour or a skip-the-line type tour. We are very flexible with our plans and tend to book last minute (unless there are must-see destinations that we know fill up). Most trips we avoid tours where possible.
We never book a driving tour or destination-to-destination tour. I enjoy that planning too much to get stuffed into a shuttle with others.
For example, our Portugal vacation included 3 different stays in Lisbon, visits to Cascais/Pestana, drive down to southern coast, drive over to Sevilla and Granada, back to Lisbon before flying to Barcelona for a few days. Then back to Lisbon before departure home.

All 3 sound great. Portugal is high up on my list though.

I have not been to any of them, however for what it's worth my Sister and English BIL have traveled most of western Europe. They like Portugal the most. Also, my uncle ran a local travel agency and he said the two best trips were either a Mediterranean cruise or a trip to Portugal.
Congratulations on 40 years !

A small village overlooking the Lauterbrunnen Valley. Unbelievable views. Rick Steves has some good videos on this destination.

I’ve only been to Switzerland of those 3 places but I’ve heard great things about Portugal from others that have been there. I would love to go on a trip to Spain and Portugal at the same time!

do all of the cities on a river cruise ---no schlepping of bags -- great food -- either guided tours or do it yourself --- Grand Circle Cruise line --- have done several and will do more -- can't beat the price -- check out their "deals" section

Viking has a Portugal cruise. We are doing a Rhone River Cruise in August. Portugal was more than we wanted to spend. River cruises are nice because you unpack when you arrive on ship and never touch the bag again until you leave. Tours are great and so is the service.

Congratulations on 40 years of wedded bliss!
We have done self guided tours in Europe a couple of times. Our normal trip was fly to a good starting point, rent a car and then drive more or less like we were in the good ole USA. We have done this for a week or so in Germany and Switzerland once, another time largely in France and a couple of times in Spain. We enjoyed the freedom of being our on our own. For each of those trips we had either a couple of young kids or an individual college age kid. All went well.

I never do tours when we go to Europe. I'm from SC by golly, so I drive myself. I have friends who have been on Viking river cruises and they loved it. No one under 18, good food, etc, but I don't like cruises, so I drive and am not subject to the tour schedule.

Only problem with driving Europe, and I have done it four times, is taking suitcases into the hotel every new hotel stop. Also, last time our GPS would quit due to the country side. Lead to many arguments and frustrations. Enjoy your trip what ever you chose.

Hit Switzerland, go down to Italian Rivera then travel it up through the French Rivera, and fly out of nice. Did it last year just took the train and hung out in tiny beach towns. Let me know if you want specific towns

Belgium sucks. Period.
You'd enjoy Switzerland (but extremely pricey) or Portugal much more.
Personally, I'd take Portugal (great food, great climate, great golf).
