Swinney discusses Steve Spurrier invitation, night game in Death Valley

Dabo Swinney was asked about the advantages of a night game in Death Valley, and he smiled like a kid on Christmas morning. Also, what does he say about the Hall of Fame dinner invite from Steve Spurrier? Full Story »

Pat Dye

Sep 6, 2017, 9:18 PM

My dad and uncle grew up with Pat Dye and his brothers and sister.(rip my dad and uncle) we would go to Auburn when coach Dye was the coach for Auburn. he continued to maintain that childhood friendship until they both passed away a few years ago. however, my dad was ALWAYS a big Clemson fan. his first Clemson game was the Orange Bowl in Miami in 1951 and he has hooked.the point is, whenever my dad, uncle and Pat Dye would get together, fishing, hunting, bad golf games. usually involving lots of cheating and adult language. my Dad made sure to wear a Clemson shirt or ball cap. Coach Dye brought him several Auburn hats and dad would throw them in the lake or river. for " fish food" He even told my dad to call him " Coach Dye" let's just say his response was not a very Christian or PC remark. so even though my dad and coach Dye were lifelong friends, my dad never, ever forgot who his favorite team was, Clemson and anyone playing Auburn.

Great story. Your dad must have grown up in Augusta. That's where I am.

Nothing wrong with that, and it makes me think that he is a better person than I ever thought him to be. Take the rough edges off, and he seem to be a person that we could actually enjoy getting to know and enjoy being around!!!

Spurrier is just a fierce competitor...

Sep 6, 2017, 10:28 PM

If he's going up against you in football or badminton, he's going to do everything in his power to get under skin. He's going to #### and do whatever it takes.

Like it or not, the guy was an absolute winner. I hated his #### while he was handing us all those losses but it is nice to see that he and Dabo have kindled a little bit of friendship.

I actually have enjoyed listening to him the past few weeks on Packer's show.

I'm not so sure about that. If he was such a fierce competitor, he wouldn't have quit working 2 + years before he retired.

He said he was finished, Tanner begged him to come back

There comes a day in every bodies life when they are just over it. What ever it is they're doing, they don't want to have anymore to do with it. Spurrier reached that point in his life with the coots, and he was over it. Those of us that has ever been there, we know why he just quit. I don't think that he will ever coach a team ever again....

Exactly!

For most men it comes a day when you look in the mirror one morning and decide it is time even if it is in the middle of something. Spurrier may have quit in the middle of the season but by staying around he would have just drug the team even further down. I was in a very similar situation about the same time so I actually admire him for leaving when he did. He admitted that he was no longer the man for the job and decided to allow someone else to try. It may look like you are quitting but it takes a lot more guts to admit you can't do it than to stay and prove that you can't.

Some men try to ignore that look in the mirror and it usually is not pretty. Take a gander at Joe Pa, Bobby Bowden, 'The Bear', and even Frank Howard. Coach Howard once expressed to me how he wanted to continue to coach but the administration would not let him. When you reach the point that you are coaching for your own personal benefit rather than for the players, fans, and school it is time to leave.

There's something in these hills.

The 2 coaches he gave the most h*ll and that's who he invited

Sep 6, 2017, 11:15 PM

Some folks are that way. The more they like you the more h*ll they give ya. Lol. You can't help but like Dabo no matter who you pull for. There's a reason people like Roy Williams go up and shake Dabo's hand in the middle of a basketball game. He is a great person and there's nobody else I'd rather have as our coach.

NO FARMERS NO FOOD

The old man always liked Dabo

Sep 7, 2017, 12:27 AM

Dabo learned a lot from the old man. Spurrier was a master at getting under your skin and he did it for a psychological advantage. Nobody will ever be able to do that again.

Still funny to me that after all the back and forths between Coach Swinney and Coach Spurrier and they've become great friends after it all. But it was never personal attacks and it's just a game, so it really isn't surprising.
