Are these in Jarrell? Or what seems like every pitcher on the staff? Seems like a lot of our runs are yielded to these wild pitches.

He is just an average catcher, at best. People who rave about him have obviously not watched every game and seen the scores of seemingly good pitches that go to the backstop. Good leader and seems to be a good kid but not a glove man.

Passed balls? Yeah, those are all on Jarrell. Wild pitches would be on the hurlers.

Unless you know what pitch was called and what pitch was thrown, it is really, really hard to say. If JJ was expecting a 2-seam fastball and pitcher throws a slider, JJ could miss a borderline pitch. Same with location. You want a backdoor slider, and you get a backfoot slider, its similar to catching a flared line drive in the outfield. The ball has a tendency to just keep running away from you.

Is JJ an elite defensive catcher? No. Has he continually improved over this, his first full year? Yes. Does he still have a long way to go? Yes. Is our pitching staff relatively young or inexperienced? Yes, outside of Knaak, Mahlstead, Garris, and Darden. Could it be a combination of the two? Yes.

For what it's worth, this seems to be common across D1 baseball. Outside of a few select teams that have pro prospects behind the plate.

I'm more concerned that Prather isn't getting any reps behind the plate. All his recruiting summaries raved about his defensive abilities.
