I personally liked this one: Beirut • Obarrio - really good Mediterranean food, in the heart of the city.
But you need to go to Old Town Panama City for some really good history, and food options.
You cannot really go wrong with any spot in the areas. If you get a chance get true bottled, fully leaded with sugar, cokes....game changers.
Some pizza joints are good too.
For authentic, Old Town is the best spot to wander.
Be safe!

Dunno but here is some good advice. NEVER--and I mean NEVER--get into a taxi with a passenger inside. Make sure any taxi you get into has numbers on the door that match the license plate. If not, don't get in.
There is a lot of street crime down there, so avoid El Chorrillo, San Miguel, Santa Ana, Cabo Verde, Curundu, Veracruz Beach, Santa Librada, Rio Abajo, San Miguelito, Juan Diaz, Pedregal, and Panamá Viejo whenever possible.
Other than that, have a good time.

How many decent parts of the city does that leave?

That's no different than being in the US.
Panama City proper and Casa Viejo are very safe.

I go every time I am in Panama. Highly recommended.
The Hilton Panama has some good restaurants too. I like Saquella a lot. Niba is a nice environment.

If you have the time while you are there, take a day trip to the San Blas island.
It'll take a full day but is an amazing experience.

We decided against it. Planning on taking the fast ferry to Tobago, catamaran day trip, Gamboa tour, and ubering to the canal museum. Canceled the waterfall/Indian village tour when I read one group was robbed at the waterfall, and bad memories on busting my #### on a Puerto Rico waterfall hike.

You only read about the bad experiences, not the countless good ones. Panama and Costa Rica are overwhelmingly safe places for tourist.
There's be what, 10 mass shootings in SC the last 4 weeks? So many it's hard to keep count. Does that make you worried to go to the gas station?
