The reason people are upset is because so many first responders had to be at the game rather than out helping people in need.

That is not true. Clemson told the police - who work games on their days off - to stay home if they had other things to do. There were fewer traffic cops than ever.
They didn't "have to be" at the game.

FWIW Clemson told first responders who also work football games to not come if they live in communities that need them. I heard there were far fewer officers directing traffic at the game and it took longer for people to get in and out of town because of that.
In Aiken, we had limited resources to get information from the outside world. I was surprised to hear the football game was still on when I was able to receive some information Saturday and I mis-assumed the upstate must not have been hit as hard as us. There's no way Aiken could have hosted a major event on Saturday. All the Dominion Energy crews had apparently been sent out of state ahead of the storm and didn't start returning to the area until late Saturday.

Yes needs to admit they messed up totally. So many first responders are used for the home games. Thought Dabo and AD actually used their brains. Had I been AD game would have been postponed early before Stanford left CA. Not like games Clemson was playing local school where could postpone at last minute. Dabo usually uses his brain after Hurricane comes through area team better for helping clean up than football game

So, which is it, functionally retarded or intellectually dishonest? I'd like to know so that I can tailor my response in a manner that you can fully understand. I'll assume it's the latter, but realize it could very well be the former. First, the university cancelled classes because classes, unlike a football game, are mandatory (this word means you have to go) whereas a football game is voluntary (this word means you can chose to go or not, as you wish). Secondly, the buildings on campus that could accommodate people, with facilities for showers and restrooms, were opened up to the public in need. On to your other complaint about troopers and first responders at the game. Were you there? Do you know how many are typically used for a home game? Do you know how many were there for this home game? Did you happen to notice a difference, and then critically think to yourself as to why that might be? Had you done that, you might have noticed there were far fewer than normal. What about the small businesses around town that use game day sales to supplement their businesses for the remainder of the year? What about the people that were able to leave their houses, that had no power, or running water, and were able to get away to some place that did, if only for a few hours? What about people like the Moore's, who lost everything, but had an opportunity to think about something else as they watched their son? I'm going to assume you didn't think about any of those, but wanted to run to the first place you could to virtue signal. Well, Karen, go ahead.

As father of a Senior , this is breaking news is so. The Student turnout was great, haven’t heard of many “outraged “ at classes cancelled.
Make no mistake, you can find a 20 year old who is outraged that the Sun came up too early if you look hard enough.
There were alot less troopers at the game than normal. And I assure those troopers had they not been at the game, would not have been in your neighborhood or town directing traffic either way.
Again, folks gonna complain either way. Most are chicken fans and others are just miserable they have no power or internet

Most of you on TigerNet sound like Rooster fans. Been Tiger for 60 years through thick and thin. Having game was totally wrong. I am not sure how many players, coaches and fans they brought to Clemson but state of South Carolina didn’t need extra people when doing hurricane clean up.

Like 90%+ of the so-called media, the hacks at the P&C play politics for one particular team. And it ain't the team associated with Dabo. Maybe the hacks at the P&C should ask their current government heroes why the FCC denied awarding Starlink the contract for internet terminals for rural North Carolina even after they won the bidding process. Why did the FCC say they didn't move forward with Starlink? Because "Starlink failed to demonstrate that it could deliver the promised service." Seriously? That systems works on boats crossing an ocean! Do you think those terminals could be providing relief to thousands of flood victims right now?
* * I'm 10000% sure that the P&C won't publish a single word about this travesty. Just like I am 10000% sure why the FCC denied Musk the contract in the first place.
FCC REAFFIRMS DECISION TO REJECT STARLINK APPLICATION FOR NEARLY $900 MILLION IN SUBSIDIES Applicant Failed to Meet Burden for Rural Digital Opportunity Fund WASHINGTON, December 12, 2023—The Federal Communications Commission today reaffirmed the Wireline Bureau’s prior decision to reject the long-form application of Starlink to receive public support through the Rural Digital Opportunity Fund program, based on the applicant’s failure to meet the program requirements. The program, which uses scarce universal service funding collected from consumers, sought to expand access to broadband networks in rural areas.

don't have a story.
If P&C wants to do some actual journalism, they should send that Clemson beat writer up the mountain for a few days to file reports, and to gather string for future reports, on FEMA and state-level response efforts in WNC.
Then send her back in a few months when the insurance companies start low-balling people's property/casualty claims (as usual), and folks start getting their FEMA disaster letters offering them *pennies* on the dollar for their lost property, too (also as usual).
Taking a one-time, nothing to see here swipe at Clemson University over a 90-minute football game that took nothing away from ongoing recovery efforts, is unimaginative, lazy journalism.

You're trying to make the point that, for several critical hours, valuable local LEO resources were pulled from rescue/recovery efforts in a way that jeopardized public safety. If you believe this, you probably fundamentally misunderstand where local LEOs land in disaster response and coordination planning.
If all the people around Clemson had to complain about was the *optics* of the game being played (which is essentially the lede of the entire story), then they weren't really in a lot of jeopardy to begin with.

The P & C is a 100% coot paper. Their Sports Director did not graduate from there but he is a big time SEC homer. He, on occasion, writes something positive about Clemson. Many of their so called journalists are coot graduates so one can see why the bias.

This is a perfectly legitimate criticism, regardless of all the fans here rationalizing their own pursuit of leisure in the face of disaster all around NC/SC. The 500k+ gallons of fuel spent putting buts in the seats could have done good elsewhere. Thumbs down me all you want, but don't act like the criticism is not valid in hindsight. Perhaps misplaced, but valid. Gas is still in very short supply days later.
If the press did a better job of covering the actual damage and troubles people were experiencing, perhaps Clemson would have decided differently, but Clemson did the best they could given the lack of information being circulated. Also if there were not absurd rules against "price gouging" on gas then the price could have been increased to prevent shortages, but logic is not welcome in politics. I am sure plenty of folks who have happily paid $50 a gallon if it meant being able to keep the oxygen machine on for a loved one.

The gallons of fuel in my car were from the midlands prior to the hurricane hitting as it would have been for most others. Not to mention the # of people at the stadium in attendance that are from the upstate and were impacted themselves. The story is incomplete and driven by a bunch of keyboard warriors that mostly haven’t done a single thing to help - that day or since.

100% agree. You have to be able to see others point of view. I was glad to be able to watch the game (powered by generator mind you) but it did make me question priorities of the university and I’ve heard from more than a handful of people about the university’s decision, especially now that they cancelled classes (including online classes).

OK, we all know the coots played the Saturday following Hugo. Saturday, FOUR other college football games were played inside the state of South Carolina: Wofford, Furman, SC State and Citadel Look for yourselves! source: https://www.espn.com/college-football/scoreboard/_/week/5/year/2024/seasontype/2 - yet only the Tigers are singled out. Clemson also opened many of its' facilities for people to shower and charge devices.
As far as I'm concerned, the P&C and all of the other papers they own can bite me.

Whatever decision was made here, some would not like it and some would like it. I live just south of Easley and we lost power from 6:30 AM Friday until 8:00 PM Sunday. We had two 80+ foot tall trees fall barely scraping the side of our house but thankfully not causing any major damage. Several other trees on our lot came down and we will probably be several months getting everything cleaned up. We went to the game Saturday. It was the only football we got to see that weekend and was a great break from everything else going on around us. We didn’t have power so watching it on TV wasn’t an option. Most of the people tailgating brought their food and drink and gas with them. I was here the whole time and I didn’t see where playing the game cause any additional suffering to the local folks here. But then I tend to look for positives. I’m sure the people who look for negatives found what they were looking for too.
