Not sure I would be comfortable eating oysters that early - the water temps are still very warm and oysters may still have lots of bacteria. I know September is a month containing an "r" but that was a general "rule of thumb" before things warmed up.

Oysters are pasteurized these days. Oysters delivered live are pretty much the only exceptions.
I lived by the “R” in the month rule for 40+ years .

“Before things warmed up”?? When did things warm up?? I grew up in the Lowcountry in the 1960s and 70s and it was just as hot then as it is now. What has changed is that refrigerated shipping has become more efficient so you can get cold water oysters year round. The month containing R rule was always applied to local oysters. When I lived there I wouldn’t eat local oysters in the lowcountry until November and then only if I got them myself.

You can get oysters no problem but I wouldn't expect locals. They will be either farm raised or northern oysters from upper coasts, east or west. You are talking about oysters like Blue Points and these are going to be costly so more like ordering a dz for $25+. But if in Charleston area one of the better pure steamed oysters by the bucket, down and dirty, is Bowens Island restaurant. Big outdoor environment or big screenporch with tables with holes for the shells.
That would be your best bet unless wanting to cook some at your place. Later in the year, there are oyster roasts all over the Charleston area like Boone Hall, Daniel Is, John's Is, Awendaw, etc. You are a month too early basically.

Just luck, but happened by the Seewee in Awendaw last October and they had a big shucking going on. Some of the best steamed lewgies I've ever had.

I always laugh at using the word “caught” when referring to oysters. Are some of them quicker than others, more crafty??

If you’re all about hob knobbing with a bunch of yankee golfers at an “oyster roast” on Kiawah throughout the summer months, hey go for it.
Everybody trying to sell the “Lowcountry” feel these days.
