Other than special occasions, who remembers where they were exactly

54years ago? (For those old enough of course). Was looking at a history of Vietnam unit that lists daily records and saw where we were on 7-2-70 and remembered exactly where we were that day- it was the only time we were moved by a truck convoy while I was there. The company drove through Quang Ngai City which is the birthplace of Ho Chi Minh. Remembered that I had a poor quality photo of part of my platoon on a truck. I am the 2nd from the right, beside the guy with his helmet on- he was killed 31 days later when he stepped on a booby trap. The guy sitting on the other side of me is the guy who tracked me down and gave me a call a couple of months ago.

Thank you again for your service, clover65. I remember that I was living in Del Rio, Texas on 7/2/70 with my husband who was stationed at Laughlin AFB, but I sure don't know what we were doing that specific day.

If you weren't in Vietnam he wasn't protecting you .He was there because our government sucked then as it does now. This is NOT a knock on him.Everyone who has been in the military is NOT a hero.Ban me if you will for being honest here.

I was a gleam in my Daddy’s eyes. Just a few short months and my conception was on the way. I was born in June of 71. I kept my father from being deployed to Vietnam in 1970. I feel I contributed to keeping one American safe. He was reassigned to Fort Leonard Wood and allowed to move to the national guard instead of being made to go fight.

From what I recall in those early days - I had begun crawling.
Not so fun but interesting fact - the day of my birth is the same day my father in law almost died in Vietnam.
Thank you for your service clover and sharing another vividly described memory

Awesome photo clover65®! Thank you for your service. I wasn’t born until 5 years after that. My uncle fought in Vietnam, so I have heard some stories-he won’t talk about much of it, though.

I was sitting in the lifeguard tower at Oakdale CC pool in Florence,SC gazing down across numerous tanned oiled & bikini clad nymphs - all the while solving organic chemistry equations in my head and thanking the good Lord I was not in the Nam.
That you for your service and your sacrifice to keep us free. What we’ve come to must break your heart

Four years old. Don't remember much... except I remember the line of tanks rolling down the street heading to Detroit to deal with the riots. My Dad passed them on his way home from work and ran into the house to get me and we walked down to the corner and watched them go by. I lived just down the street from the tank arsenal where Chrysler manufactured the tanks.

54 years ago today, I had just gotten promoted to 1st Lt. the day before and my platoon had moved from Tam Ky north to DaNang and were right across the street from Freedom Hill. A few weeks later I would be on my way to the USS Sanctuary hospital ship and then on to the Naval Hospital in Guam. It seems just like yesterday......... still vivid memories of the smallest details.

Here is a caption from the Hill 4-11 history- hope it is readable. I was in B Company but don’t remember being in a fire fight with 100 VC! That would have been a memorable 4th of July- I do remember a fierce thunderstorm that night as we camped in an open valley! Nature’s fireworks!

What a coincidence. My platoon was in an old SeaBee compound right across the street from a PSP airstrip where Air America (CIA) planes used to fly in. As a Marine unit, we actually supported the Army's Americal Division, as we were in I Corps and there were not a lot of Army units there. Our main job there, as Combat Engineers was to sweep Highway 1 every morning for IEDs (we called them land mines) and booby traps. We also built bridges and repaired roads and anything else needed doing. My compound in Tam Ky consisted of me, my platoon sergeant and 26 men. We provided our own security with was tough with only 26 men, as eight of them on each shift, had to man each of the four corners of our perimeter. You were on guard duty every other night ....... not a lot of sleep ..... but you know what that was like!

Thanks very much for your service. Enjoy reading your comments about it. That July, I completed the second of a three year tour in the divided city. May have been working swings, mids, days, or days off, but don't recall. If the latter, likely was traveling in the European free zones. Did take a tour of London about that time, returned to stay a couple of nights at the Army installation at Darmstadt, then caught another tour to Paris before getting back to Berlin.
