OT: What is the hardest golf course you've ever played?

I'm sure there will be a lot of great courses mentioned in this thread, but the hardest course I've ever played is Oakmont. The greens normally run 15-16 on the stint and the fairways are extremely tight. From the tee, there are bunkers in the landing area that you have to navigate, and if find yourself in the bunker, the only option is to play it out like a green side bunker and hope to salvage a decent number. It's a wonderful course, but one of the hardest to play. I will be interested to hear other thoughts on courses around the country.

Mine is Carnoustie. They do not let you pick the tee you play from. They tell you which tee to play. We played it at about 7200 yards long. One par 3 was about 275 yards, and number 18 that Jean Van de Velde made a 7 on, well I beat him with my 6, which was a double bogey!

On the par 3 No. 14 that plays between 160 and 170 yards (which is generally a 5 or 6 iron for me), I hit a low fading 5 wood directly into the wind that was coming off the ocean and I still couldn't reach the green. Humbling indeed!

I agree! Only played it once, back in 2012 NY day. Hungover as #### after NYE, hit my drive on #1 just short of the fairway bunker on the left. 160 something to the hole, stripe an 8 iron out of the dormant rough right at the flag. Drive up don't see it. Spend a couple minutes looking off the back of the green when my brother says, "Did you check the hole?" I say, "Heck no, ain't no way it went in, I can barely see straight after last night!" Go back to looking in the brush and my brother yells out it's in the hole. One of only a handful of eagles in my life. Oh, and in typical golf fashion, I completely fell apart after that hole and MAYBE broke 100 that day after that start 😂

The difficulty of the Ocean Course varies with how hard the wind blows. I have played it with little wind and it’s not terribly difficult but I’ve also played it in winds of 25-30 mph and it’s dang near impossible.

Carnoustie in Scotland. Wonderful caddie made it a little easier. Actually the hardest was Country Club of North Carolina for the conference tournament my junior year. It was a million miles long, brand new, and soggy. In those metal shaft, wood clubhead days (not wood shaft and stone clubheads, as my son suggests) some of the holes were just unreachable. Plus the greens were slicker than owl sh%%%.

Pinehurst #2 without question. Spent most of the day going back and forth around the greens. Here's a tip: Listen to your caddie. Took me 4 holes to figure that one out.

Played Forest Oaks in Greensboro the week after they had the GGO. Course was still setup for the tournament. Tight fairways, the rough was thick and the greens extremely fast. Gained a new appreciation for tour players that day.

Stonehouse outside of Williamsburg. Beautiful holes, but it's the last time I paid $125 to shoot 125.

My wife grew up on Forest Oaks, behind hole #8 (used to be #17 back in the day BTW). That was a difficult course for sure in tournament conditions. Shame they lost the tournament but I hear the course conditions have improved recently after a long down turn. I'd love to play it again one day if just for nostalgia. We played in a big tournament there the Friday before we got married back in 2006.

I have played Augusta and from the member’s tees it’s not particularly difficult but I’m sure it’s a bear from the Masters tees. The most difficult part is putting the greens. If you ever get to play it get your caddy to read the greens. I only 3-putted once but would have been lost without my caddy.

Pinehurst No 2.... turtle back greens.

I was stationed at Fort Bragg (now Liberty) for 15 years and worked there on the weekends part time when I wasn't deployed and cut the greens on No 2. Best job ever. I missed working the US Open in 2014 b/c I deployed to Afghan, but this year I reached out to my old boss, No 2 superintendent and was able to mow the 9th green all week.

It was awesome b/c the greens crew was up there on 18 when Rory missed his putt and BD hit that awesome bunker shot to seal the win. Was right there on the front of the green at the awards ceremony.

Now I need to retire and go caddy or mow greens at Augusta to play the course the Monday after the masters. If I can ever play Augusta National, I will have accomplished all I ever wanted to in life.

Torrey Pines South Course was fun too. And the narrow fairways at Harbor Towne are rough. TPC Sawgrass is awesome, put 4 in the water on 17.

I like the way you describe the way you feel about playing Augusta National. When I played it the pin on #16 was on the front left- having watched the tournament for years I knew that if I landed the ball on the front right it would feed toward the hole and that’s exactly what happened. It stopped about a foot from the hole and I told the people I was playing with that if that ball had gone in I would have jumped in the pond and drowned myself because I would have had nothing left to live for.

That sounds like a round I played at the Ocean Course several years ago. It was about 45 degrees and the wind was blowing so hard the flagsticks were leaning at about 45 degrees. When the wind gusted it looked like a sandstorm. I shot 84. Far from the best score I’ve ever had but certainly one of the best rounds I’ve ever had.

Musgrove Mill- an Arnold Palmer design in Clinton SC. The slope rating should have a comma in it. Number 2 on my list is Royal County Down in Northern Ireland.

I played one at Myrtle Beach that really kicked my tail. There was one hole with a windmill…I finally gave up.

Smithfield’s tightest course I’ve ever played and I’m never going back either

#2 was my hardest until this past Summer I played Southern Pines CC. Same architect but smaller greens, faster (yes, faster!) and more undulation. When I checked in I saw hats that said, "Ross'd". I didn't understand them until after I played...I had 40 putts that day lol

Eastlake before the remodel...it was a goat track, up and down those hills, irridation was dead everywhere and you could play it for the cost of Bobby Jones drawers (one pair) Downtown Marriott was pushing it hard!

I haven’t seen it mentioned here but anyone from the Charleston area would probably agree with me that Pine Forest in Summerville is brutally difficult. It’s pretty wide open but it’s long and the green complexes are as difficult as any I’ve ever seen. If you miss a green in the wrong place it’s almost impossible to get up and down. Years ago they filled in a stream that ran between holes 3 and 4 and I asked the guy in the pro shop why and he said that they had to do something to make the course easier. He said they had people coming in after 9 holes wanting their money back and swearing they’d never come back.

Fortunate enough that after graduating with a PGM degree that I’ve spent my career at the three major resorts in the Carolinas. Kiawah for 9 years after graduation, Sea Pines (Harbour Town) for 9 after that, and moved to Pinehurst in January. Was fortunate enough to play The Ocean Course the day after the PGA in 2021 and it was the hardest course I’ve ever played, both in terms of difficulty and well, it was just hard!! The turf was as firm as could be, I don’t think I took a divot all day. Having said that, the rough was up, the greens were fast, and the fairways were firm. It’s not like that any other time and believe it or not, if the wind isn’t absolutely howling there’s some scoreable holes there. They can’t go overboard with that course or you’d be looking at six hour rounds which is not good for a resort.

On an everyday basis….Musgrove Mill in Clinton is the hardest track I’ve played. There are positions on that course that are almost unplayable and they aren’t far off the beaten path.

And FWIW…the course that comes closest to mimicking tournament conditions year-round is Harbour Town. They can’t really stretch it out any longer than it already is. They do firm up the greens and fairways for the Heritage and raise the rough slightly, but their agronomy team does an awesome job day in day out and are some of the best people you’d ever want to meet!

I’ve lost more tee shots at Boscobel that were hit straight down the middle of the fairway than I care to remember. Not even on blind holes. Just pipe it right down the middle, get there and there’s not a ball to be found.

Still had Bermuda greens but were way faster than anything I had played. Kentucky Derby Day, cloudless sky, perfect. Played 27. My dad and his best friend and a member friend who invited us. Still perhaps my favorite day of my life, except the day I married and the days my children and grandchildren were born.

That windmill on #19 was tough.

The water jump on #16 was doggone near impossible.

They did have good corn dogs and cutting candy in the clubhouse, though.

Played a bunch of these. I was wondering if the inclusion of Augusta National was a flex. I thought it was hard from an approach shot standpoint and on/around the greens. Very easy off the tee though. If you hit the ball from right to left off the tee, Smithfield in Easley ( front nine) is a tougher course for normal member play
Lots of Dye Courses but not Barefoot Landing. Maybe it has softened up over the years. We played it on a golf trip right a year after it opened. It was so hard, I have never gone back.
