OT Warranty work on TV by Best Buy

Jul 28, 2015, 5:44 PM

Has anyone had a Geek Squad tech come to their house to fix a TV?
Luckily I bought an extended Warranty for the first time in my life.
The TV will not turn on and it has power.
Wouldn't it be easier to just give me a new TV?

They will probably replace it. The mainboard in the TV is probably fried and its cheaper to replace the TV then to get a new part and take the labor time to replace it. Still they have to take a look at it. You should also have to option of taking it to a store where it will be looked at and shipped out to a service center. Would probably have a faster turnaround that way.

At least it worked that way when I worked there like 8 years ago.

Somebody is coming in the morning.
I called the store, they said not to bring it?

I don't know about that. The main board went out in my LG 52" and L.G. sent a repair man who came from 60 miles away. He made one trip to diagnose the problem. He came back the next day with a new main board and repaired the TV.

If you paid for the warranty might as well use it.***

Oh I am but they are sending somebody to my house to tell me they can't fix it.
So why not just give me a new one?

Hate to spoil your optimism but don't be surprised if you don't get a new TV. I assume you are talking about one of the big flat screens (LCD, LED). If so, they are made up of a couple circuit boards and, the screen, of course. If one of the boards failed, and that sounds like your problem, it is a pretty easy fix.

I had a Samsung 52" that was about 5 years old that died and a little online research pointed to a power supply board. I found one for $40 online, ordered it and it took longer to pull the TV off it's wall mount and take the back off than it did to replace the board (all plug-in connections). If you have a plasma TV, these are reportedly quite a bit more expensive to repair and you may get lucky.

As you know, your extended warranty is basically an insurance policy that Best Buy charges you a premium for and buys a policy to cover their potential cost. The company backing the warranty is looking for the lowest cost option and probably forces Best Buy to try to repair first. They pay a flat rate for a service call, probably well under $100.

Worst case scenario, they identify a bad board and have to order the replacement which could take several days. If this happens, you might try asking them to ship the part in Next Day Air but they may refuse or ask you to cover the air freight cost.

Any way, Good Luck!!

Ask for a loaner TV also while waiting on a part needed for repair or get one from a rental store for a specific timeframe. Either way you still have a set to watch.

Have you already completely unplugged the tv from the wall, let it sit for 10 minutes or so, and then plugged it back into the wall?

If you have not, try this.

I have a westinghouse lcd tv that gets confused and won't turn on occasionally unless I do this.
Now I've got it plugged into a switchable power strip so this is easy to do.

Yea I tried all that.
Any way the repair man just left and could not fix it. I'm going to best buy in a few to get a new one.

They won't even bring you the new one?***

Nope, gave me a invoice and said I could go pick out a new one.

At least you get to pick

Jul 29, 2015, 1:24 PM

check the CNET or Consumer Reports reviews before you go so you have a good idea of what you're looking for.

I got about 800 dollars to play with that's what the old TV cost.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Pick out a higher quality than the one you bought.

Jul 29, 2015, 1:40 PM [ in reply to Re: They won't even bring you the new one?*** ]

Tell then those models are junk and the trip to return more than merits the higher price and that you hope the new set isn't made of the same junk parts.

That's fair if you consider the loss of time of not having a TV, the expense of transporting it back, transportation of the set home and mounting the new one.

It's fair as rain to ask for a set that cost a hundred dollars more.

Yea I have thought about that I'm going to definitely tell them I don't won't the same one.
The picture the broke one had was the best TV I have ever had. But it only lasted 3 years

I do custom AV installations for a living. I've had great luck with Samsung and Sony for what it's worth. Not a fan of consumer Sharp displays, although their commercial displays are very good. Good luck to ya and Go Tigers
