OT: In-state Tuition for Out-of-State Students at USC?

May 4, 2011, 11:43 PM

I was curious if anyone else had heard about this ...

My wife has two fairly intelligent younger cousins who are Juniors at different high schools in the state of Georgia. As Juiors do, they are looking at their college options. Well apparently UGA is very difficult to get into these days (even for in-state students). So they are looking beyond the GA border.

We've been recruiting them to come to Clemson. They've been up for a couple of football games, they've done the official tour and they love it. However, they are both leaning towards that other school in Columbia, because they say USC-East is offering in-state tuition for out-of-state (perhaps Georgia only?) students.

Does anyone know if this is true? And if so, does Clemson offer a similar deal?

From Clemson's 2010-11 Undergraduate catalog...

"...the governing boards listed in Section 59-112-10A above (Clemson is one of them) are authorized to adopt policies for the abatement for any part or all of the out-of-state rates for students who are recipients of scholarship aid".

I believe this includes academic scholarships as well as athletic grants-in-aid.

I live in NC, and two girls from our neighborhood got

in-state tuition to USC five years ago. They are both nice girls but not great students. Both have now graduated.

Back in 2005, Clemson had a similar deal...

May 5, 2011, 12:24 AM

at that time, if an out of state student scored at least 1400 on the SAT, Clemson let them pay the in-state tuition rate as a "scholarship". I know this because my son (who went to HS in SC for his first 3 years, but graduated from HS in GA) came up just a little short on the SAT (scored 1360). Those 40 points cost an extra $32,000 in tuition over 4 years. Financially, it's a BIG incentive to be able to pay in state tuition rates.

In 2004, it was 1300 or top 5% of your class.***

Clemson does still offer this

May 5, 2011, 12:26 AM

I don't know of the exact circumstances however

I graduated USC last year and I knew a ton of out of state students who had the same deal. If you get any scholarship offer from the school, then you also automatically get in-state tuition.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I believe if you get at least a $500 scholarship

May 5, 2011, 1:17 AM

you automatically get in state scholarship at USC. I may be wrong, but that's what all my out of state friends said while we were in college.

Re: Yeah this is at Clemson too

Back in the dark ages when I was in Clemson (late 80's) one of my close friends from NC was on a partial academic scholarship and it included a reduction to in-state rates.

I think it may be a pretty automatic thing for students in the Clemson Honors College but presume there are others.

Perhaps usc is a bit quicker to do this than Clemson is though. That may be because Clemson gets more out-of-state applicant whereas scu needs the added incentive or it may refelct the quality of out-of-state student relative to in-state.

Honors College students from out of state do not

May 5, 2011, 9:41 AM

automatically get a tuition break or any scholarship.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

if Clemson is continuing to break admissions/applicant

May 5, 2011, 8:19 AM

records every year, why would they consider discounting tuition? If full-price demand is as high as reported, it makes no sense to cut prices.

Re: if Clemson is continuing to break admissions/applicant

Clemson does still offer this incentive to out of state students. When a student applies they are automatically considered for any scholarships including waiving out of state tuition...For this years class of accepted students the minimum requirements were a 1370 on the SAT (or the ACT equivalent) and they must rank in the top 10% of their class.

I'm not sure what USC requirements are, but my guess is that Clemson's are a little more stringent.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

if they're smart, Clemson will do the same

May 5, 2011, 9:12 AM

I actually was offerred in-state tuition coming from Virginia because I had a certain SAT score and GPA. What they need to do is either inquire about Clemson's requirements for the out of state fee waiver, or designate Clemson as one of the recipients of their SAT scores when they take the test.

Of course, USC's standards will be lower for the waiver, so they may have less trouble getting in there.

It is a scholarship offer...

May 5, 2011, 9:32 AM

I am from Maryland and went to Clemson for the cost of in-state tuition as a scholarship.

It happens at schools all over the place. The fact that USC is offering them in-state while Clemson is not just goes to show you that Clemson generally has higher-caliber students.

I'm thinking that if you can' get in UGa then you probably won't qualify for the tuition waiver at CU
