On this day in history 1957...

the Wham-O toy company, creator of the Hula-Hoop and Superball, rolled-out the first batch of Frisbees.

Interestingly, the story of the Frisbee began in Bridgeport, CT where William Frisbie opened the Frisbie Pie Company in 1871. Students from the nearby universities would throw the empty pie pans to each other. Years later, two men (Warren Franscioni and Walter Morrison) invented a better plastic version of the disc which was sold to Wham-O in 1955. Wham-O change the name to Frisbee (misspelling the name of the pie company).

By its 50th anniversary in 2007, Wham-O had sold more than two hundred million Frisbees.

All of those and don’t forget the paddle ball with the rubber ball attached with a rubber band. Or at least when it was new. The rubber band never lasted very long at our house.

Anybody here tried to hula-hoop lately?

I tried with my kids hula-hoops a few years ago, and discovered that it was flat out impossible as an adult. Seriously, it's the physics involved or something. Or just getting older. At the time, I was very fit and physically active, what with golf, basketball, karate, etc.

Could not hula-hoop to save my life. It came natural as a kid.

Inhibited the hula-hoops performance. Now that I'm thinner, I'm also older and not about to risk a back injury! :)

Frisbees and Bowman Field.....when I was at Clemson, one would rarely see one without the other.

Who doesn't love a Frisbee ? Our dog loves his.

We sometimes would go to a field and play dodgeball with paint can lids. We did wear work gloves, we weren't stupid. Well ok, we were stupid. It's a wonder none of us got seriously injured.

Threw the ol Frisbee around in the Lemans parking lot every day after classes.

No need to "Hold my beer". One hand for the disk, one hand for the beer.

PS couldn't afford to drink beer every day. Fridays only.

As a kid in Clemson, the only place I knew to get one was from the Chaplain at Holy Trinity Episcopal. He sold them cheap, so I think it was just a service to the students.

we had Sky City and Roses stores but selections were pretty limited. This was, of course, before the days of K-Mart and Wal Mart.

My hometown also had a hobby shop that sold train sets, slot car sets, model cars and planes, model rockets, and Frisbees.

I think I got my first Frisbee on a family trip to Myrtle Beach. Probably from one of the many Whales, Pacific, Waves, or Eagles stores. Of course, I bought an orange one.

Remember the days when most roofs in the neighborhood had a frisbee or 2.
