On This day 39 Years Ago...

On December 23, 1984, I was lucky enough to get married to my longtime girlfriend who I had taken to the prom 4 1/2 years earlier. I was still a senior at Clemson and had 1 remaining class to take the next semester.
We moved into a roach infested apartment in Central for $120.00 per month. We both worked for Clemson University... me in Engineering Services and she as a secretary in the Agriculture Department. We had nothing, but had the time of out lives. We partied, hiked in the mountains, saw Clemson sporting events, anything that cost little or no money.
Today my wife is retired from teaching (with me close behind), I've sold my longtime plastics business, my son is graduating from Clemson in May, and my daughter and her husband just announced they are having their 2nd child in June.
All is good... our health is good, we've already started seeing the world, and I'm looking forward to the next 39 years of marriage. My parents will celebrate their 76th anniversary on Valentines Day, so I see no reason we can't do the same.
The best decision I ever made was the marry this special lady 39 years ago, and it is still paying dividends today.
I hope all of you have a blessed Christmas eve eve, and appreciate your spouse as much as I do mine. Take her someplace nice tonight (just because you can).
Go Tigers!!! Beat Kentucky!!!

My wife told me to take her somewhere expensive, so we went to the gas station.

I am envious of you two because I married my wife 39 years ago yesterday, but she died in May. We were both in our 30's and had a son and daughter. I am a Clemson Grad and she graduated from Winthrop. She fought an almost 17-year battle with cancer. Yesterday was rough, but I would do it all over again, if I could. Our house still echoes with the memories. I even laughed at some of the things we did. I am just waiting for my turn to come. Until then, and even after GO TIGERS!

Congratulations Pig! We are going to celebrate 40 years in July. We met as freshmen living next door to each other in the prefabs near the P&A building in 1980 and got married in July 1984 when I had one semester left. We lived in an apartment directly behind the Esso Club where Valley Walk is now. That last semester I continued working at the Clemson Dairy creamery and she worked as a waitress at Strawberries which is now TD’s. All we had was some hand me down furniture from old roommates and a 1977 Chevy Impala her dad had given her. So poor I didn’t even have a checking account and was mailing Zales jewelers $20 cash every month to pay for her engagement ring. Now we are retired with 2 great kids and 2 granddaughters. Don’t know when we got old but it’s here. We are also both healthy and just really doing what we want these days. It’s a great thing. You are going to love retirement.

We might have been. If your wife worked in the Ag department I could easily have known her. It is funny how similar our paths have been. What did you make at your plastics company?

We made parts and assemblies for many industries, but primarily in the rail, laboratory, aerospace, and energy areas.
Maybe we can get together with the wives after February 22nd. We could meet up in Clemson!!!

That sounds good. I did some work with plastics in the dairy industry. Blow molding HDPE and PET jugs and bottles. No telling how many plastic milk bottles I’ve seen made and filled over the years.

We are all blessed to have had great women in our lives. Don't take them for granted (as I am somehow stupid enough to do).

married SEVENTY FIVE YEARS already. I thought that was a very long time, and it is. Butt, it is not even close to the record, per Guinness:

"The longest marriage ever is that of David Jacob Hiller (b. 20 October 1789, d. 7 July 1899) and Sarah Davy Hiller (b. 17 March 1792, d. 8 April 1898), who were married for 88 years 349 days, as of 8 April 1898, when Mrs. Hiller passed away."

MARRIED to each other for almost 89 years. Most people don't even live to the AGE of 89. That's a whole lot of putting up with each other, right there!

:)
