OL scholarship breakdown …

6

Jul 5, 2023, 11:29 AM

We currently have 15 OL on scholarship and we lose one (Putnam) after this season.

Getting O’Connell and Westphal would bring us up to 16 going forward. 16 scholarship OL seems to be a pretty standard number for a program to carry at any one time.

Still, it would be great to also sign Satterwhite in anticipation of one of our current guys perhaps deciding to hit the portal.

Here’s the breakdown on scholarships per TNet …

Getting all 3 OL and Williams would send a strong message…

to those Dabo and Clemson haters out there. And I really think that can happen. We will need to secure a great QB the next recruiting cycle. It is great to be a Tiger!

IMO....I think that's a tad light for elite programs.

I would like to be slightly higher than that...similar to BAMA, OSU, UGA, etc (17+)...can never have too many OL. Such a hard position to project...& you have extra numbers to account for eval. misses and injury. In the past, not now, we've also taken too many projects which have hurt talented depth. Usually we can hide it, but it shows when we play against more elite teams.

Agree abt Satterfield, although it looks like UT ATM. Our OL recruiting has trended upward the last few years. I would just like that room to carry another 1-2 guys. Its the one position group that we have really never made consistently elite year after year.

Bama ‘23 roster lists 15 OL total, UGA lists 17 OL total …

Jul 5, 2023, 4:24 PM

Ohio State lists 18 OL total.

… I’m assuming all those listed are on scholarship.

We currently only have 15 on scholarship, but we also have another 7 listed as OL who are not on scholarship for a total of 22.

With the advent of the portal, it may become a real challenge to try to stockpile a large group of scholarship OL without losing one or two to transfer.

That said, I’d be really happy to get 3-4 this cycle because, I can envision a couple of older guys leaving for lack of PT after this season if not before.

IMO, the only thing our FB team has been short of to compete for NCs year in and year out, has been an OL of 4-5 star guys across the line with depth!!!!

Sadly, IDK if Owens will ever be in shape enough to play meaningful snaps for us, ever. He tore his ACL last year and got even more out of shape. It’s going to be a lot of hard work to get him on the field over the next 4-5 years. If he does he will be a monster.

I think we need to take 4-5 a year. Between guys leaving or just not working out we need 20 or so on scholarship at any given time. Ideally we would typically be so deep we would only start upperclassmen. If guys are walking in as freshmen and being expected to contribute thats a bad sign.

20 is a touch high

definitely need more than 15 though. Maybe 16-18 is the target.

If U followed Dabo's recruiting, instead of "thinking"

Jul 5, 2023, 3:53 PM [ in reply to Re: OL crystal ball ]

for yourself, you'd know Clemson normally hovers around 15 OL. What you, or anyone else thinks about it , doesn't matter.

Can you imagine him and Big Zach Owens anchoring the line in the future?
