OK, some of you oldtimers help me out here....

The infamous Tobacco Road Refs... there were 3 or 4 whose names I could always toss out, but having a brain fart tonight. Karl Hess is the only one I remember right off hand. Who are the others???
You know, the ones who always... ALWAYS called the phantom fouls that favored the Tar Holes & Puke in the final minutes. And ignored their fouls. Many a game decided this way over the last 50 years...

Lou had all of these crazy antics as he was officiating on the BB court, but he was always calling against Clemson. Remember one football game in Chapel Hill that everyone there said the Clemson made a field goal to win but he called it bad. That's before they had the two officials under each upright, and the official standing behind the kicker called it.

Lou Bello was also a football ref, and he stole the 1965 game from us. We were down 3 or 4 points to the heels in CH, and a TD would win it. We had 1st and goal at the 1 yd line with 25 seconds left when our offense set up for the play. Bello stood over the ball for those 25 seconds and wouldn't let us snap the ball, and the clock ran out with him standing there. Maybe the worst act ever by an ACC official, and the conference didn't do anything about it.

Remember the game where JR Reid slammed a tiger in the face

With his elbow and they called the foul on the tiger. It was a tie game if memory serves correct. Then the ref called a techinical on the tiger coach. unc won by that 6 point swing.
Tigers had momentum and had the heels on the ropes before those horrible game changing calls.
During the off season the NCAA made a rule change that any player swinging elbows drew an automatic foul.

the main thought was... at least we'll get to play a fair basketball game with BIG10 refs. It's not a good match in terms of geography, we'll get our butts kicked in football... but it will be nice to finally have a fighting chance in basketball. And they mentioned these refs named above. Which of course, we are all too familiar with. I can promise you, tonight would not have happened if any of the old school Tobacco Road Refs had been on the court. You had to see it to believe it... year after year, decade after decade.

I think it was in CH in the 70's Terrell Suit got a broken jaw from some UNC goon of the era. Never was a foul called for that.
