Good teams often don't try very hard when they play bad teams.

Scores are closer than they would be if they were playing hard like they would against a worthy opponent.

If it's a blowout, then it's "Oh, that team is terrible, look how much better we are" but if it's close "Oh, they're not trying hard"

No. Sometimes good teams can blow out bad teams even when they aren't playing hard.

Sometimes it is closer than it should be.

It's the first game of the season against a bad team. I wouldn't look too much into it.
