Offensive Lineman

Jun 24, 2012, 1:24 PM

I love the fact that our recruiting class has taken off in the past couple of weeks. One concern I have is the lack of offensive lineman on the list, only one unranked prospect in Morris that I see. Danny Ford used to say, and most football coaches would agree that football usually comes down to who blocks and tackles best. It looks like we are getting really strong in the tackling department. For you recruiting experts, how is our offensive line looking for the next few years?

I may be wrong but I think we got a good many OL in the past 2 yrs. People were complaining then that our ranking would be low because we are getting too many OL. Ain't gonna load up on OL every year.

I think you always need 3-5 Olineman every year. They have a long lead time before they are productive and are extremely injury prone.

We have about fifteen or sixteen offensive linemen. Most of these guys were rated fairly high. It is all about coaching these guys. Every year Navy plays tough competition and their offensive line does very well with mostly two star players. We have the size and Coach Caldwell just needs to work these guys.

Then why do we have such a lack of experience on the line?

1 senior and 1 junior???

Recruiting too few lineman this year will cause the SAME cycle and the same troubles in a few years as we are currently having.

Last year we had like 10 seniors, now we are struggling for experienced depth.

If we had plenty of bodies, why did Shatley and potentially McClain have to move to the Oline? Why does BT, an ideal LG, have to play LT?

I donno, I stand by taking 3-5 lineman every year.

also Injuries and transfers.

The big one is JK Jay a 4* tackle that had to give up football.

I think its more than fair to say

the OL situation is finally starting to stabilize. With good coaching, diet supervision and strength training, hopefully the offensive line won't be a problem for a long while.

Thanks for the updates. It sounds like the OL is not a big need in this class.
