Off Topic - Top 5 Christmas Movies

4

Dec 13, 2024, 11:00 PM

We’ve been knocking out at minimum 1 a day in the buildup to Christmas.
Some are better than others. Got me thinking what everyone’s go to viewings are.

My list in no particular order:

-Muppet Christmas Carol
-Christmas Vacation
-Arthur Christmas
-Elf
-How the Grinch Stole Christmas (Jim Carrey Version)

Honorable mentions:
Christmas With The Kranks, Four Christmases, Jingle All The Way. (All 3 of these are terrible movies but I can’t help but enjoy them every Christmas lol.)

Home Alone, Gremlins, and Lethal Weapon def honorable mention. Christmas Story for it being a classic, but don't care for 24 hours of it.

This!
Never understood why of all the movies, that’s the one they run on repeat Christmas Eve.
Good movie but not worthy of a 24 hour marathon.

Dec 13, 2024, 11:19 PM [ in reply to Re: Off Topic - Top 5 Christmas Movies ]

Christmas Story is one of the most overrated movies of all time. It's right there with Tombstone and Gladiator, but by itself in first place for overrated.

Re: Off Topic - Top 5 Christmas Movies

Dec 13, 2024, 11:54 PM

It isn't junk or cheesy at all. It's right up there with the Patriot and Braveheart imo. One of the better movies of my lifetime. You must also think A Knights Tale isn't good huh?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Off Topic - Top 5 Christmas Movies

1

Dec 13, 2024, 11:56 PM

Braveheart was good. The Patriot was just okay. A Knights Tale is pretty bad.

Re: Off Topic - Top 5 Christmas Movies

4

Dec 14, 2024, 12:11 AM

Just rewatched the Patriot about a month ago and that movie still holds up.
Didn’t expect to see love for A Knights Tale but I’m completely on board for it. Love that movie.

Re: Off Topic - Top 5 Christmas Movies

1

Dec 14, 2024, 12:11 AM [ in reply to Re: Off Topic - Top 5 Christmas Movies ]

Braveheart was really good. That is a classic. A Knights Tale wasn't even thought of as good back then. It wasn't even hyped as good when it was out.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Off Topic - Top 5 Christmas Movies

2

Dec 14, 2024, 12:18 AM

It's just personally a favorite of mine. Great movies imo are
The Departed
Django
Shutter Island
Inception
Saving Private Ryan
Catch Me if you Can
Oceans 11
Fight Club
I know I will get knocked for this but the Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings series.

Good list. Eternal Sunshine is a great movie and underrated imo. Then Prestige was okay. The only one I didn't see was the Butterfly Effect.

2

Dec 14, 2024, 12:39 AM

You have to watch the Butterfly Effect man. Promise me you will. I think it's an amazing movie if you like stuff like that. It's similar to Eternal Sunshine in a mind trip kind of way.

Re: Off Topic - Top 5 Christmas Movies

1

Dec 14, 2024, 12:21 AM [ in reply to Re: Off Topic - Top 5 Christmas Movies ]

That's a solid list. Shutter Island is a little overrated, but it was worth watching. The only one I didn't see in that list is Oceans 11. I have heard good things, but just didn't catch me. I like that list.

Re: Off Topic - Top 5 Christmas Movies

Dec 14, 2024, 12:26 AM [ in reply to Re: Off Topic - Top 5 Christmas Movies ]

The Harry Potter series is so much more intricate than people realize.
The storytelling, plot development, just everything top to bottom.

If you’re a Harry Potter fan, I recommend listening to the “Binge Mode: Harry Potter” podcast. They go into the books, a couple of chapters at a time, and break it all down.
It’s phenomenal. You’ll learn so much more about that series.

- It's a Wonderful Life
- A Christmas Carol (animated with Jim Carey as Scrooge, almost word for word the original Dickens story, great actors)
- Holiday Inn (Bing Crosby and Danny Kay)
- Christmas Vacation (who hasn't experienced something, if not everything spoofed in that movie!)
- Elf is pretty good...
But best of all is the Charlie Brown Christmas (not a movie, but nothing captures the true meaning of what it's all about better than that. The music is simply spectacular - Vince Guaraldi, genious!)

2

Dec 14, 2024, 10:18 AM

It's filled with positive Christmas messaging.

There's the Christmas party where Nicky promises to whack out most of his crew and their wives for spending all the loot from the Lufthansa heist on themselves. (Positive message: Christmas is a time for giving, not receiving.)

There's the Christmas Eve where Henry buys the biggest tree on the lot because it's been a good year in the drug trafficking business. (Positive message: Happy Holidays come for those who work hard in their chosen fields.)

If that's not Christmasy, tell me what is.

And don't even get me started on Donnie Brasco, which is also replete with positive Christmas messaging.
