This is just baffling to me. I’ve said it before: this team/coaching staff needs a Common Sense Coordinator. “Biggest games of the season?” Yes. “And more points wins the game?” Yes. “Okay we need to try to score more points this half”.

At least Riley acknowledges he made a mistake. It is better than Goodwin sitting there telling us that we needed more speed on the field in the 4th quarter of a game and proceeding to take out one of your best defensive players off the field.

eh not a coincidence that they had ~120 rushing yards and 7 points in the first three quarters when Sammy was on the field and then had ~160 rushing yards and 10 points in the fourth when Sammy wasn't on the field. as the OP said, this program could use a common sense coordinator who can buzz down to Dabo when the entire stadium is seeing something transpire in real time that the coaches are missing. could have used the same person in 2022 to buzz down to Dabo and tell him to start running the ball in the 4th quarter when we were averaging 6ypc and DJU couldn't throw it in the ocean.

Technically I believe Sammy played 4 snaps in the 4th quarter. Despite this fact, he still was the team's leading tackler for the game if that tells you anything about his value and effect on the game. He was not on the field for the final Sellers TD run. It was an idiotic decision to pull him given the circumstances. Sellers is a mediocre passer and they have no weapons that scare anyone in the pass game with their 74th ranked passing offense. if they beat you through the air then you just tip your cap. You don't let them ring up more yards rushing in the 4th quarter than they had in the first three quarters combined because you have the wrong personnel on the field.
From USA TODAY after the game:
Clemson football's defense dominated South Carolina's offense for three quarters in the Tigers' 17-14 rivalry loss on Saturday. The Tigers stifled quarterback LaNorris Sellers and the Gamecocks' rushing attack, holding them to just 240 total yards, including 127 on the ground, while allowing only seven points.
Much of that was courtesy of linebacker Sammy Brown, who was everywhere during the first three quarters. Brown was relentless, making nine tackles, one sack, and 1.5 tackles for loss while consistently disrupting Sellers and running back Rocket Sanders. Despite that, Clemson defensive coordinator Wes Goodwin made the puzzling decision to pull Brown off the field in the fourth quarter.
The move, head coach Dabo Swinney said, was a shift in defensive packages. "We felt they were going to change the way they were going to play, but nothing more than that," Swinney said. But the Gamecocks didn't change their game plan. Instead , they relied more heavily on the run, carrying 17 times for 140 yards in the final quarter—more than they had managed in the first three quarters combined.
Brown briefly returned for one snap in the fourth quarter, which ended with Khalil Barnes' interception to end a would-be South Carolina scoring drive. Yet, the Gamecocks kept rolling, with him on the sidelines for the most part. Given how limited South Carolina was in the passing game - with heavy reliance on the run - it's a head-scratcher why Clemson ever sat Brown.

This. I have felt all year that Woodaz just is not as talented as Brown. Brown should be starting MLB when we are in the nickle. He should always be on the field. Both him and Carter have a lot of athleticism. I know someone is gonna claim it is blind loyalty. But I think it is just Woodaz has more experience. Therefore, he is trusted to understand how to get everyone lined up. Still, I think we take what ever lumps come with starting Brown over Woodaz and pull that trigger. Basically, I am saying Woodaz needs to be off the field in passing situations, not Brown

Goodwin thought they were gonna pass more than they did. They just leaned on Sellers running. I might have given Goodwin a pass if most of the runs in the 4th were scrambles, but they were designed QB powers, counters, and draws. Goodwin should have stacked the box and dared Sellers to beat us with his arm. If he just drops a dime for a TD, i could have lived with that. But watching him run the same thing over and over that last drive, and not being able to stop it was frustrating. Devil's advocate for Goodwin, the one he scored on was a scramble.

Nothing wrong with speed on the field defensively but........ when you tackle and wrap anyone running at the legs they are going down. Tackle anyone up high and it almost a 50/50 chance they are going down. Some basic fundamentals in football never go out of style.

This guy (GR) must be more in line with the majority of the staff.....meaning "learning on the job". I believe he was really helped out at TCU by Sonny Dykes.
Maybe 2023 was his real first season as an OC with EVERYTHING on him alone.....and he struggled.
Here's to hoping he's learned and will keep the pedal to the metal!
Go Tigers!!!

A wide open offense can only operate successfully in one speed. It’s wide open or 3 and out. Your choice. Why would anyone not want to score as many points as possible especially in your rival game or ACC title. 😳

at Clemson, and certainly precedes Riley being OC. A podcast i listen to often references "Big Game Dabo" as he has a tendency to be very conservative in big games. Dabo leaned on Brent's defenses to close out a lot of close games back during our CFP run. There aren't many examples of games where we went out and aggressively picked up 1st downs or late scores to ice closer games. More often than not Dabo is content to run the ball 3x to burn clock/TOs and punt it back to the other team rather than try anything "riskier."

Remember the 10 minute drive to close out the 2nd NC over 'bama after we were up 44-16?
Two things stand out there. One, we were up by 4 TDs. Two, we sustained the 10-minute drive.
Didn't do either of those in those games we threw away.

Getting a nice lead and then coasting may be an option with a top 10 defense but our defense hasn't shown the ability to shut down decent teams for four quarters so why are we still coaching like it's 2018?

For admitting "he took the foot off the gas too early" in two critical games tells me he is not the OC for Clemson. Get rid of Riley and hire a OC who continues to attempt to score on every drive as though we are 30 points behind even when the subs are in the game. I am not a Riley fan. Streeter did just as good a job for 1/3 the cost. Look at the win/loss column.

You're an idiot. You cannot look at the "win/loss" column for a coordinator because the game has three phases. Look at our defensive stats this year vs 2021 and 2022. Look at our special teams rankings.
You have to look at statistics.
2021 - #100 total offense, #103 passing offense, #67 rushing offense 2022 - #48 total offense, #66 Passing Offense, #47 rushing offense
2024 - #12 total offense, #17 Passing Offense, #42 rushing offense
I don't know why I'm trying to talk reason to someone who actually thinks Streeter was a great coordinator. Let me try something else: Riley 2024 coach. 2024 numbers good. Streeter 2021 and 2022 coach. 2021 and 2022 numbers bad.
Clear things up for you?

Considering what Streeter did with DJU for the '21-'22 turnaround from him, and what we've seen of DJ since he left here - Street deserves a lot more credit than he's gotten from our fans.

If you were going to pull out numbers at least get the right. First of all Tony Elliott was the OC in 2021. Streeter in 2022 and why are we skipping 2023? because it doesn’t fit your narrative? Garrett Riley’s first year was worse than Streeters first and only year as OC at Clemson.

I would accept the job as the common sense coordinator in exchange for free transportation to ALL games and a spot in the booth with a direct line to Dabo.
Possible comments I might make during a game ....
Are you serious? ###! Are you out of your mind? The objective is to keep scoring points. You play the game to win! Stop rushing 3 D-linemen! We play better in the 4-3. Another bubble screen. The definition of insanity is .... and expecting a different result. You might want to teach your WRs to block when you call that kind of play. It would be a great idea to have some blocking drills if you want to use a DL for your field goal protection. 3rd and short and you decide to call a risky sideline pass 15 yards down the field? Are you stupid? Yes, you are definitely stupid!

Idk why they choose to go Spring Game offense when they get a lead all the time. Tho we did miss 2 critical plays that would have put both games away. The slant over the middle to Wesco on the big 3rd down in the 4th against an all out blitz and the go route down the sidelines before the half of SMU. Play calling has been ultra conservative late, but still need to take advantage of the big play when it is there.

Getting their hands on him wasn't a problem, wrapping up and bringing him down was and over pursuing by the DEs instead of containing. Other than the Sammy 4th qtr debacle, the D still held them to 10 pts 59 mins in, that should've been plenty for the offense to have the game on ice.

I don't understand why we even considered "taking our foot off the gas" against the Coots. We were only up by a touchdown for most of the game. A single f###ing score! Who in their right mind is comfortable enough with 7 points being good enough to just lay back and relax for most of the game? I'm convinced our coordinators either have CTE, are absolute idiots, or are covering for Dabo. It has to be one of those 3 or a combination.

The old adage that when teams start trying to prevent the usual thing they prevent is winning>
Getting conservative on offense to try to use up clock, seems to me at least, to do more to put the defense on its heals because the offense gets into a funk.
When it comes to these playoff games score score score. It is what we will have to do to beat Texas. a 21 point lead is not good enough to be sure you have a sustainable lead. Texas score from a long way out. they have a worse redzone offense than we do by the numbers, but the sure do hit it alot from outside the redzone. That ads up to a team that can score really quickly.
I read an article about long drives not being nearly as good as qucik scoring drives, because long drives greatly multiply your chances of making a major drive ending error. Its one thing if it does take a long drive, but its another when you purposely slow the offense down to try to eat up game clock when your run game is not dominant.

This isn’t a Riley offense. If it was it would be fast pace. Up tempo dropping bombs and destroying teams. The Dabo Respect card lives on. Dabo has this offense playing vanilla.
Reasons why:
Grisham isn’t a great WRs coach. Our WR’s can’t get out of a jamb. Spiller was one of the best RB’s for Clemson but isn’t a RBs coach. Our O-Line coach is still 1 yr in.
Grisham needs to get our WRs to be more physical.

All this harping is preparing me for Heaven.
Clemson has been winning football games for over a decade using that exact plan. The concept is designed to stress the players and harden them to the fact that at times the games will be won only if they play their best.
The wisdom encircling the fact that one learns more from failure than success eludes the simple. The fruit of that lesson showed in the very next game when one pass completion and one FG attempt won the game.
I spent the first 4-5 years of Dabo's tenure going nuts because I was a simpleton who didn't recognize Dabo was teaching and how well that prepared the young men under Dabo's tutelage.
Riley came to Clemson to learn from Dabo because Dabo is the winningest coach in the game today. How wrong he is to miss that lesson.
