Chop was probably the worst one in Dabo's career. The difference with DC Allen can be heard in all of the comments coming from the players. Looking forward to having a real coordinator running the defense and being dominant again.

All on Dabo. He gets the bad with the good. Wes was not even CLOSE to being ready for the job. To go from Brent to Wes? Please. We all saw it before game 1. Now we should se results as Allen is a seasoned coach. I wish Wes well.

Agreed. You can understand why Dabo gave him the opportunity from the perspective that Dabo himself jumped from position coach to head coach. And they obviously thought he was a genius and hoped he could continue the Venables system. But ignoring his personality traits, compounded by the fact he has ZERO on field coaching experience, was a huge head scratcher. I imagine that will be the last hire Dabo makes like that going forward. 🤞

Dabo had a responsibility to Clemson to hire a proven DC but failed miserably and gambled Clemsons future with the failed hire. Our recruiting on defense took a huge fall and we are still paying the price with lack of depth there . This was a colossal mistake that Dabo made !

You are one to talk with all the failed goobers at Scar. At no time was Clemson or Dabo's future in doubt.

Some of these Monday morning QB's are just geniuses. If the shoe fits.........
TDP had a good idea about Dabo but in no way did he know he wasn't going to be a bust.

The difference between Dabo & Wes is demeanor. Dabo had the demeanor to lead the program. Wes had neither the demeanor nor the on-field experience to be a successful DC.

I made a thread a while back to ask for proof of Wes playing tackle football at any level…and none was offered. I’m not sure he ever tackled anyone in a live game….not that he appears physically able to do so!

I think with Wes.....
He was Rainman in defensive analysis and I think an under rated part of why BV was able to do what he did while he was here. He spent three years as the assistant to the head coach at the Arizona Cardinals under Bruce Arians and he raved about Wes' knowledge there too... So much so, to keep Wes, I think Dabo had to promise him the DC position whenever BV decided to move on to be a head coach.
But was painfully obvious as shown by every interview Porkchop ever did was he was absolutely scared in front of any camera and looked like he was so nervous every time a question was asked. I can not imagine him being any better in a recruit's living room.
It was obvious, though, that he could not coach, as shown by the defensive performance under his lead as DC. And his analysis of an opposing offense might be top notch, he just couldn't command the discipline need from his players.
He just needs to stay in the film room breaking down film and tendancies to give to someone who knows how to coach, call plays, and make adjustments. Everytime I was watching Clemson on TV if there was a defensive huddle on the sidelines during a time out, Dabo was always doing more talking than Wes and that was a problem.
Dabo gambled a bit on Wes, and he missed. But to Dabo's credit, he moved on and we have a proven veteran in our new DC.

Let’s see how our D actually performs on the field this season before locking in this take.
Remember we have mostly the same players…remember it took about 1.5 seasons to fully get Riley’s impact on the offense after Streeter was fired.
I think Allen will definitely improve the defense but I don’t expect to be an automatic top 5 defense like with BV right out the gate!

I’ve never played a down of football past high school, even I questioned the hire. You’ve got to not only know the schemes but also look in the eyes of your players and strike a little fear and motivation. Not sure Wes could do that. Hoping for a totally different culture on defense this year.

Disagree. Thomas Austin was Dabo's worst hire.

The best way to judge is what the NFL thinks of players and the starting point that your Pork Chop had was really low. There is a world of difference in the NFL talent level this year and the last couple of years.

Did you read the story on the front part detailing some comments on recent Clemson defenders in the NFL from training camps?
And don’t we have 2 DL players projected to go in the top 10 of the 2026 NFL draft?
The cupboards weren’t bare.

I know, but if there's one thing i have learned over the years is that if you just go off comments made during fall camp we'd be 12-0 every season.

After the 2nd natty Dabo lost his way a little and went overboard with friends and family hires. Let those guys go get seasoned somewhere else and return to Clemson after they’ve proven themselves.
Wes might still be an analytical genius but he didn’t know how to teach basics, motivate players, or make the calls on the field. I heard he would prep a ton of stuff the week before, which had the players already thinking too much, and then he would flounder on game day if things started to go sideways.

Dabo doubled down in an interview the other day and said he will always hire from within first…. I thought maybe he had learned from the porkchop mistake.
