Objective Coot

Nov 29, 2014, 8:58 PM

Congrats on the win today. Have been a lifelong SC fan, but as a high school football coach in this state that has sent a couple young men to CU and they could not be at a better institution for those young men.
Clemson and their staff do it the right way. My take on several things I read on here.
1. Dabo is a great head coach- Clemson is lucky to have him. I do believe Spurrier is one of the all-time best and both have built programs the right way.
2. Clemson could play with anybody in the country and would be an sec contender, but year in and year out the SEC is more dominant top to bottom.
3. Clemson will lose some assistant coaches because they have done a good job. Dabo will replace with good men who fit.
4. I believe the future is bright for Clemson, but everything has to fall into place. If this years defense was with last years offense we are talking about a dominant team. Next year the team will have skill players better than or as good as anybody in the nation, but I am worried about the OL. No matter how good a freshmen they are, it is a big difference between an 18 year old kid and grown men in the trenches. The defensive staff is as good as there is, but a lot of personnel graduate. It might be a replay of a couple of years ago when the offense was so good and scored so quickly and the defense had not matured yet. Defense wins Championships.
To the game today---
1. SC has outplayed and out coached-
2. Clemson's offensive freshmen are gonna be special.
3. Defense was as good as advertised.
4. Officiating- just being objective- Watson scored on that goaline run in the first half- missed called. Onside kick rules changed a couple of years and that was the right call. ESPN was just butchering the commentary. Targeting- i believe it is a horse crap rule but I believe they called it correctly. Seems like good hard nosed football to me, but was probably the right call by how the crazy rule reads.
Sorry so long but again Congrats.

Good post from a coot, and I agree with much of it. When critiquing the officiating, you did fail to mention by far the worst call of the day, the obvious fumble that was ruled a non-fumble. That was atrocious.

Decent post for a coot, but you need to stop drinking the ESPN/SEC kool aid.

I only said that because it's better than 99% of what we normally get from coots, and at least he was upfront about who he cheers for.

I believe the SEC is beginning a slow demise. Alabama being so dominant will actually negatively impact the rest of the conference.

Spuid casts aside players with no concern for them....

OBS is a prime example of the classic narcissist.

I cannot imagine recommending a young man to go to that man to be coached.

Absolutely no way that was targeting

Nov 29, 2014, 9:14 PM

It has to be forcible contact with the crown of the helmet. He made incidental contact with the SIDE of his face mask but the forcible contact was with his hands when he pushed him down. MAYBE roughing the passer... but targeting?? no effin way. not even close.

Re: Absolutely no way that was targeting

fumble at the end was a terrible call. The only thing i can think of was the whistle blew it dead, and it should not have have been blown dead, but maybe it was. I think the targeting is a bs rule, but a qb after release is considered a "defenseless" player and most of the time gets those calls when a helmet to helmet hit is involved. I don't agree with it.
As far as sending a kid to Spurrier to play. Spurrier has never lied to any kid I have ever coach and recruits them the right way. I have never pressured a kid to choose a school I pull for. Those young men and families make decisions that are best for them and I have been happy for every single kid that has an opportunity at the next level at any school.

You can't be serious about that target call. Absolutely worst call I have ever seen. Targeting is launchng yourself at head or neck area. Someone please explain to me how the he77 he launched himself when his feet never left the freaking ground not to mention he put his hands up. BS call PERIOD

RULES

Targeting and Initiating Contact With the Crown of the Helmet (Rule 9-1-3)

No player shall target and initiate contact against an opponent with the crown (top) of his helmet. When in question, it is a foul.

Targeting and Initiating Contact to Head or Neck Area of a Defenseless Player (Rule 9-1-4)

No player shall target and initiate contact to the head or neck area of a defenseless opponent with the helmet, forearm, fist, elbow or shoulder. When in question, it is a foul. (Rule 2-27-14)

Note: Beginning in 2013, ejection from the game is a part of the penalty for violation of both Rule 9-1-3 and Rule 9-1-4.

KEY ELEMENTS

Target—to take aim at an opponent for purposes of attacking with an apparent intent that goes beyond making a legal tackle or a legal block or playing the ball.

Crown of the Helmet—the top portion of the helmet.

Contact to the head or neck area—not only with the helmet, but also with the forearm, fist, elbow, or shoulder—these can all lead to a foul.

Defenseless player—a player not in position to defend himself.

Examples (Rule 2-27-14):

A player in the act of or just after throwing a pass.
A receiver attempting to catch a pass, or one who has completed a catch and has not had time to protect himself or has not clearly become a ball carrier.
A kicker in the act of or just after kicking a ball, or during the kick or the return.
A kick returner attempting to catch or recover a kick.
A player on the ground.
A player obviously out of the play.
A player who receives a blind-side block.
A ball carrier already in the grasp of an opponent and whose forward progress has been stopped.
A quarterback any time after a change of possession.

KEY INDICATORS

Risk of a foul is high with one or more of these:

Launch—a player leaving his feet to attack an opponent by an upward and forward thrust of the body to make contact in the head or neck area
A crouch followed by an upward and forward thrust to attack with contact at the head or neck area—even though one or both feet are still on the ground
Leading with helmet, forearm, fist, hand or elbow to attack with contact at the head or neck area
Lowering the head before attacking by initiating contact with the crown of the helmet
