They wanted to win the trophy. Because they know they are so good they can waltz into a conference and just walk away with the title. That will shut up all the people that say they need to join a conference. Shutting up people is very important to ND apparently. But they just aren’t good enough to achieve their goals. Must suck to be them.

The Orange is a major bowl and the lowest ND would drop if out of the CFP for another SEC team.
