Black players on opposing teams rarely place their hands on their hearts when Natl anthem is played. They put their arms behind backs. All 4 UNC players did this all weekend. Sad….

Hey now.... Lawrence Welk had ONE black dancer....

But he never danced with any of the white women...
Good Lord I really hated that show - my Dad loved it. In a house where there was only one console color TV with the whole family gathered around - my Dad would always manage to find a Lawrence Welk episode being aired and watch it. We only got 3 crappy channels and he could always find that darned show.
Of course - that was back in the day when us kids were the remote controls to the TV where a wired in rotator box on top of the TV was used to turn the rooftop antenna. The tuned in TV pictures of the 3 channels we could get were always fading in/out. Being forced to watch Lawrence Welk was bad enough but having to watch it going in/out of focus was literal torture...

During the pledge at local high schools generally half or less stand, though
Mar 18, 2024, 10:38 AM

those that stand typically have their hands on their hearts. It that case it's not necessarily by race or gender. As far as reciting, that varies by school whether the announcer say to "recite".
Statement or lazy? IDK. Most all are at least respectful enough to be silent.

There's no requirement to stand at attention for any of that, nor should there be in a free nation. The Pledge has always been silly.
It also shouldn't concern anyone what someone chooses to do during that time as long as they remain quiet and don't disrupt it.

People can do what they want, and people can talk #### about what they do.
Why does it concern you if people verbally express displeasure of what people do during the national anthem?
I think complaining about someone not putting their hand over their heart is a little ridic, but I certainly don't like it when people use the time to protest whatever. Their right to do so, and my right to say #### them.

Because I know what road they eventually want to go down. First, they're bothered by it. It eventually ends for calling for requirements and punishment for failure to obey.

Why does that bother you?
If people protesting during the national anthem shouldn't bother you, then people calling for whatever shouldn't bother you. It's all just a form of speech.
Would you be ok with players giving a double fisted bird to people protesting the anthem, without punishment from the organization ? As long as they do it silently. Now, I don't think people should do that, but to me it's a similar level of offense as someone protesting during the anthem.

Demanding forced patriotism has never existed or isn't new. There had to be a Supreme Court ruling to stops schools from suspending children for refusing to say the Pledge. You had a "large swath" who wanted actual punitive measures taken against NFL players for kneeling. There's a gazillion old fart pseudo-patriots like Bengal who get triggered over Koreans at breakfast buffets who would love to see mandatory acts of "patriotism" any time the Pledge or the national anthem is fired up.
Couple it with a "der herp why is it the blacks?!" type of post, and it was begging for righteous ridicule.

A private party market-based decision by the team owners as to how they expected their employees to behave.
Thinking that is overkill is no more or less American than finding those participating to be offensive to their beliefs and opinion of the country in which we live.
Point being, neither them nor you have a monopoly on the right side of freedom of thought or expression.
Said it a million times. We gotta get back to the days when we simply thought someone might be foolish or simply incorrect for having a different opinion. It all went to hellin a hand basket when we started deriving feelings of superiority and validation for possessing a different viewpoint. I don’t get all of Bengal’s concerns on this one but I don’t think he’s some sort of rube for pondering it, nor do I suspect it’s some concern cemented in racism. Seemed like genuine (admittedly non-PC) curiosity.

My original point was I think it’s sad that there seems to be little Individual Thought going as it pertains here. Didn’t express that, sorry… Is the group think among the vast majority of young African Americans that America is rassist and the Anthem is inherently rassist? The individuals I referred to in OP come from widely different geographical areas of America as is the case with every visiting team coming to Clemson. Interestingly, Gardner Webb probably had the most Un-regional composite of home towns.

You're associating not putting your hand over your heart as a sign of protest, with no evidence to back that up. I can't recall the last time I've done that before a game, and it has nothing to do with politics.

One of the best ways to demonstrate “individual thought” and reject “groupthink” is to recite a pledge and sing a song (while standing in a specific manner) with other people, preferably numbering in the tens of thousands, all of whom are doing the same thing in unison.
Thank you for such an excellent perspective.

trying so hard to create some sort of narrative that you are actually spending time keeping track of this nonsense, correlating race with it, then even researching the college kids to see where they come from.
We live in a free country and all appreciate that. Many probably enjoy having the freedom to not be persecuted for singing and chanting while in a certain position and you should probably respect that rather than make (or at least imply) generalizations of large groups of people.
Why do you even care about this?

The people who gravitate toward the MAGA contingent are so ####### worried about what other people do with their lives. We have a woman on our street who is in that camp (thankfully moving) who sticks her nose into other people's business, even reporting a parent for a bull #### reason.
These people are itching for a more restrictive nation on personal freedom.

When the Anthem is played, from our seats we look directly past the visiting team (who has their backs to us) toward the American Flag. It’s pretty obvious what members are the visiting team is doing. I’m just pointing out consistencies I’ve observed this season and asking questions.

Ignoring the decidedly non-MAGA contingent who are extremely concerned with everything from whom you hire to what you drive to what type of stovetop you cook on to whether you should remain employed based on your Covid vaccine status…….
There are many things you can probably pin more exclusively on the MAGA contingent, but being overly concerned about what people do isn’t one of them. It’s too freaking universal across the board.

When a vegan EV driver starts bitching to the HOA about the pork butt I'm smoking for the street, I'll remember your warning. But for now, I've only heard from the neighbor who was once on the news, literally crying and saying Trump "saved his life," who demanded the HOA ban all flags that weren't American ones (and had to be properly displayed).
Hearing a lot more out of that clown camp than the other. At least down here. But when Moonbeam gets pissed off at truck and my BBQ, I'll retroactively point you on this post.

I don't think it's widely known that it's "appropriate" to have your hand over
Mar 18, 2024, 1:16 PM
|

your heart during the National Anthem. I always did hand-over-heart for The Pledge, but "only" stood respectfully during The Anthem.
My BIL was ticked that my son's HS baseball team all stood with their hands behind their backs for The Anthem. I thought he was wrong - so I looked it up (can't remember where now) and found that the "appropriate" thing to do is to hold your hand over your heart during both The Pledge and The Anthem.
But - again - it does seem like many of us only learned to do it during The Pledge.

Right, let's pretend that it is just a coincidence that the people whose phone tells them all day long
-They are persecuted by white people as were there parents and grandparents -Any material possessions they or their family don't have is because of yt -The American flag is a sign of Trump who hates everyone except himself and especially hates black people or whoever is the conversation topic at the time -That 100s of other big name athletes, who also believe they are oppressed, protest the anthem in some sort of way -The national anthem is only for yt, that's why we have the black national anthem
and they are not 'protesting.'
You lefties are so pathetically Woke.

Mine doesn't. Nor does anyone else's that I know of.
Now, I suppose it's possible that your phone (ERRRR....the fox news app) tells you that other people's (non fox news worshippers) phone tells them stuff and you are just repeating it. That's probably what's going on here now that I think about it.
