I kind of agree there, but the whole experience is going to be far bigger for even the away teams than one of today’s non playoff bowls. I’m sure they are still getting gifts and all the cool things that go along with a bowl.

Many of these kids are driving cars worth a house thanks to NIL. I don’t think they give a crap about bowl gifts of $800.

That is precisely the OP’s point. The team will be at the opponent’s home field, but only a select few (3500, IIRC) fans can purchase tickets, versus half the stadium at proper playoff games.

Agreed. That’s kinda been interesting to watch all the reactions. Many acting as if we’ve made the promised land and trying to defend our lack of coaching while others complain we’re missing a bowl. Im more worried about our defense and lack of coaching on that side. Im worried our WR disappear. Im worried we rush for 26 yards. Glad to be here but I’m a realist. I also know anything can happen. Im just glad we aren’t the coots.

all the teams are still getting paid. I think we get $3 million for playing Texas. Which is probably close to what we would have gotten for going to one bowl game. The big difference is the practice time we won't get if we lose. Playing in a bowl game you get WAY more practice time and all the players get to practice.

competitive situation is WAY more valuable than any bowl game where the 3rd string guy finally gets to play a little. Competition is why you do this, not a few hundred dollars of swag and the ability to play for playing time next year, or to sit out for the draft prep.

I totally agree that it doesn’t make sense for the players to miss out on a true bowl experience. Perhaps some of these sponsors will understand this and provide the appropriate experience for the first round games also.

Imagine when we host a Michigan or Ohio State or a historically big name that we don’t often play for a first round game? The excitement will be off be charts.
Imagine how excited folks in Austin are. It’s a nice reward for the teams hosting.

It's like a play in game and Clemson gets $4M. Good enough if they win, the Peach bowl in next. 12 seed three loss team is not seeded for success. A win against USC would have changed our seeding and chances to an extent.

If you get out of first round you get to play number 4 rather than 1,2, or 3. To me ASU or B st is easier path than Oregon or Uga. Depending on which texas team shows up first round may not be to bad.
