He’s right. The ACC was a true joke of a conference in the early 90s. We had no teams ranked at one time. It was a 4 yr span (maybe 93-96) but not sure. I’ll look it up. Anyway, the league was very weak.

I think you are thinking of 1995... when it was FSU and a 9-4 Virginia. I think they beat Georgia in a bowl game but that might have been a different era.
Yeah, it it wasn't for Welsh at Virginia, some pulse at Georgia Tech, and ironically a Mack Brown Carolina the rest of the conference was pitiful.
Let that sink in... the powers other than FSU were Virginia, GT, and North Carolina.

Are you referring to Clemson not being ranked during that time frame? I can't recall the ACC ever not having any teams ranked at all for any time frame. And I believe FSU finished in the top 10 every year in the 90s. Seems like Virginia and NC State had some decent teams when I was at CU (94-98) that were generally ranked in the teens or 20s. Clemson was definitely pretty bad during that time frame though!

North Carolina, not NC State. I'm certainly not arguing the conferences was stronger back then than now though! It is definitely stronger most years now post expansion.

Regardless, from the middle of the 90's I will say during the BCS error, the ACC was a weak conference, and it would have been very difficult for a 12-0 ACC team to get the Nod to play in the college NCG over a 11-1 SEC team!!!

Kinda but not really. If you considered the conference ACC + FSU (due to the huge talent gap), then I agree, but if you consider FSU as the conference, that isn't quite right. If you look at only "true" BCS 1998 on" then that still isn't accurate.
A one loss FSU did play Tennessee for a Natty in the first BCS. Then there was an undefeated FSU vs VT in 1999. Then a 1 loss team played OU in the BCS game as well. So during the 1990s FSU did go undefeated and play for a Natty twice. Technically, 1996 was non BCS but they were undefeated... and then lost in a rubber match with Florida.
But yes, non-FSU was weak during the BCS "error".
However, it is interesting none the less to think that Bowden was 2 of 5 when playing for a "Natty" in the last game of the season...

You're right, and that is what helped ESECPN to crown/promote the SEC as the king of college FB!!!

The ACC hadnt even expanded.
Im pretty sure there was a several year period where Florida State was only team that was even ranked.
It's not even close.

from an academic standpoint, but they are tucked safely under Swoffie's wing where they get to do anything they like.
It sickens me that all it took was millions of dollars in lawyer fees to save them from any repercussions from that fake class garbage. "UNC did nothing wrong by letting athletes take bulls*** classes because the bulls*** classes were available to EVERYONE!" Pathetic. I literally have zero respect for that university, and zero respect for their baby blue guardian angel, John Swofford.

I’ll translate his comments for anybody not of age in the 1980’s: We are looking into the drug test results to see if we can levy additional sanctions against the entire program beyond what the NCAA deems fair. We will also be reviewing Clemson’s academic programs since their achievements reflect poorly on our pillars of basketball glory at favored institutions Duke and North Carolina and the newer fine roundball schools of Louisville and Syracuse.

I graduated from both universities back in the'60s (BA, CU '67 and MA, UNC, '69). Frankly, I was much happier at Clemson than at UNC. I used to give UNC a little money every year, but I got disgusted with some of their PC excesses and quit that about four years ago. I'm a retired teacher, so I don't give a lot, but my donations go to Clemson and will for the future. The arrogance and condescension of the UNCs of the world make me more than a bit sick. G O TIGERS!
