Most of the time, the teammates support the decision. It's being practical for a meaningless bowl. Now quitting at half is odd.

Seems selflessness is no longer looked at as a virtue and selfishness is encouraged.

I thin sometimes there is too much money on the line for them and their family. The Belk Bowl or something isn't worth it anymore. Once they start a game though, they have to finish.

If you were broke and your kid was about to get a check for $3-5 million, or get nothing if he got hurt in the Cheez-it Bowl, at the least you would encourage your son to make his own decision and you would support him.
You would not call him a quitter. That's why your position has no credibility. Go Tigers!

At some point I have to think there is a reflection of character. Would it be the responsable think to do for the coach to pull the team off the field if the score gets to a point that the game is out of reach?
You always have to way the dangers, but there is also something to be said for making a commitment and seeing it through. I liked the decision of the Citadel coach earlier in the year not to accept a running clock. The right decision is not always the safest or least embarrassing. I understand your point, but in this case I certainly don't agree with it.

To clarify, I am assuming that the OP was in response to the Oklahoma State player "opting out" at halftime

arguing at which level of circumstance it is acceptable to quit, not whether the act itself constitutes quitting.
As an analogy, a woman that prostitutes for 20 bucks may be called a hooker. A woman whom costs dinner and 1000 dollars for the same service might be called an escort. But they are both prostitutes.

Spot on. Call it what you want but as its been discussed before, it's ruining college sports. College baseball has been eroded and now that's creeping into college bball and football.
Certainly players and roommates are going to say they support the player. What else are they supposed to say. As stated in other threads, I support a playoff system and a nit playoff system for group of 5 that don't qualify for the big playoff. You have playoffs in d2 and d3, as well as high school. At some point, it'll have to change.
What you're headed to now is once a team loses a couple games reg season, why continue to play. It happened with teams this year. Quit mid season.

They are meaningless for certain players and those are the ones that usually opt out.

And those are the players that make it so enjoyable for fans

to opt to support a team RATHER THAN GO FISH TOURNAMENTS ON SATURDAYS..or play in golf tournaments..or go to the beach and loaf, or go skiing, or hiking...etc. These players that have started opting out because it is BEST for them are going to kill the fans enthusiasm. And I honestly believe, once they kill it..it will be over. Now, universities will have an option. They can go back to true student athletes. And I mean athletes that get accepted based on GPA, class rank, etc. Now, none of, or nearly none of those will have NFL potential, but if we are all competing for the same players, I will still want to stomp the coots. And as long as I am able, I will be in Death Valley pulling for them. But, if it gets to the point that when we have an 8-3 team about to play a 7-4 South Carolina team, and our star QB,Receiver, Linebacker and maybe a DE decide they don't care about that game...well sir, I sadly will have to call it quits too. Maybe not for that one game...but, the next year when it is time to pony up a few thousand dollars to go watch 7 home games....Well, $3,000 dollars will buy the best Lowrance Ghost trolling motor on the market.....I mean, that sucker will do everything but clean and cook the fish!

Well,I'll tell you what...when the fans start opting out of

going to bowl games where 4 or 5 of your best players did WHAT WAS BEST FOR THEM....it won't be long before those fans start opting out of paying ever increasing non tax deductible donations to the athletic departments...and sooner or later...there won't be scholarships for players to opt out of. Then they can get accepted to universities the same way every other student does. IMHO these players owe it to every fan who invested their time and money into each and every game. Let me put it another way,if fans ONLY paid to go see BOWL games and or Championship games, how much money would that generate for college sports? Very little. No sir, they pay for all of the games. THe pissant games. They do it hoping to get to a championship or at least a decent bowl game. And then they get there, and your 3 or 4 best players (AKA North Carolina) OPT OUT ...IN THE BIGGEST BOWL IN North Carolina's football history. Yep, before you know it, all we are gonna have is basketball, baseball...and soccer..

The players don't really opt out of the playoff though. What bowl are the coots playing in? Would they really be upset if a player opted out who was about to get a lot of money for his family? Do they really want that player to risk his future in hopes of winning that 3rd game of the year?

dollars so that the Priviledged player had the OPPORTUNITY to showcase his wares to the NFL? Without the continuous support of those fans, that player does not have a platform to showcase his talent. What about the coaches that work 100 hour weeks for 18 to 20 weeks staright, coaching and creating offenses and defenses to make that player what he is...

Just watch your future players and enjoy. If we were going to a junk bowl and a WR opted out, it would be cool to get some PT for a young guy getting ready for the next season. It wouldn't change anything for me. I would have already had a many years of enjoyment from the player about to get ready for the rest of his life. Now if it happened for the playoff that would be another thing.

Call it whatever you want ..... quitting is quitting. I had a Marine in my platoon in Viet Nam who "opted out" of every operation and work detail. I could not force him to work and we did not want him on operations as he was too dangerous to have along. So basically we just ignored him until I got a chance to send him back to the states for a General Discharge under less than honorable conditions, or a Bad Conduct Discharge. I say just ignore these quitters. I would not want them around my team after they quit.
