Clemson gave him the platform, resources and time to be great. He got well over 1mm+ in NIL because of Clemson's national brand from Dr. Pepper, Bojangles and others Your coach and teammates stuck by you threw every pick, fumble and confidence issue The second you taking off the field you run. Just disappointing...

No it doesn't, but it's #### poor timing waiting until you have been given every chance possible to get better, even watching him lose to our most hated rival, and then allow him to start the next game and see the same thing that lost to our rivals. He could have, should have waited until the season was over bc, even with him not being with the team at the bowl game, he will still get what the team gets for playing. If we win, he will also get the orange bowl championship ring!!!!!

God people are stupid. This has been debunked a million times. By the rules of the NCAA Clemson university could not give a ring or a “gift” to a player that is no longer part of the team or the school? It wasn’t Dabo being spiteful that’s not who he is it was the rules. KB walked out on his team he deserved nothing.

That's what gets to me more than anything else bc, he wouldn't be leaving before the bowl game if he his play hadn't been so bad. Now that Dabo says it's best for the "team" that he made the change, and with that change meaning he is no longer the stater, he is going to leave on the very same people he calls his friends and teammates, that sucks, and it don't matter how you see it, it still sucks that he want stand with them when someone else has proven to do a better job than he done, yes it sucks, sucks, sucks. It's friend like that, that you should never take your eyes off of, bc they will stab you in the back, as he has done by entering the portal the moment, he's not the starter. You would think that he knows the change was for the entire team to be/get better, but it seems that he has no interest in that. It goes back to what I said during the coot game, if he was a real team player when he got hit on his hip, he would have said he couldn't go back out, and give Cade a chance to save the team from that loss, but he chose to get worse in that game and stopped the 8 straight and the 41st straight win at DV!!!!

Yeah, that actually only happens in the minds of fans and fictional accounts in movies. It is never the players responsibility to take themselves out of the game. It is the coaches responsibility. If you were a player at his level you would always think you could get it done the next play or the next drive. Players are always like this in every sport and at every level if they are truly passionate about the game. Unfortunately, as much as I like Dabo and his staff in general they made some poor decisions this year.

Are you serious?
If you are, this is the best way to handle this. Why stay on and hold a spot that could be used as a replacement? It’s the new era of College athletics. If you are going to bash the players for transferring every time…you are going to have trouble come this time yearly.
Players entering the portal need to do it now before the first signing day in a couple of weeks.
We don’t have to like it but to sit here and bash a player because he’s doing what’s best for him is very sad.

How about loyalty, gratitude standing by your teammates? After watching Dabo make excuses for him all year (while throwing EVERYONE else under the bus) looks like he played Dabo for a fool at the expense of the rest of us who actually pay for this program

That’s what’s wrong with our young society now - all me and what can you do for me. No gratitude or loyalty - makes me nauseous to think of the world in general in 10 years. I’m old school too. He got a free education and paid endorsements. I had to pay my way through Clemson.

Nothing wrong with moving on when it's time. DJ needs to find his next school, get enrolled, move and be ready to start school in just over a month. He's not simply skipping the bowl because it's beneath him.
He represented Clemson well. Never got into trouble, graduated, always spoke well of Clemson.
I'm sorry things didn't work out better, but DJ did everything that was asked of him.
Funny that you're dinging him for a lack of loyalty - I certainly wasn't seeing much loyalty from many Tigernetters when they were bashing him left and right because he wasn't getting it done on the field.
Good Luck, DJ. Always a Tiger!

You've hit the nail on the head.
Unfortunately if you want to transfer you HAVE to do it now. Schools need to know what spots they have open and positions they will need filled for the early signing period.
It would be nice to see DJ in Miami and I'm sure he would love to be there. In fact I suspect he might even be there as an interested observer since he will graduate this month.
He could remain at Clemson as a backup but can you really blame someone to aspire to something besides being a backup? This is why athletes go and work out in the dog days at summer at 5 AM in the morning. So they can play. And unlike other positions backup QBs do not play. Yes Cade can regress. Or he can get hurt. But no true athlete would wish that.
So let him pick a school where there is an open competition and let him try to keep playing the game he loves. Why he traveled from the LA suburbs to play for a rural school in the Piedmont. No one shuld grudge him that.
He has been a class representative for Clemson. He has been a great teammate according to every report. He has been a great mentor to the QB who has replaced him. He has gone to class. He is close to graduating. He has borne the brunt of absorbing the blame for a year (2021) where there was significant injury (and DJ himself was hurt) and yet took us to a 10-3 record and another bowl win. Yes it's not the lofty heights we are used to. But I went to school during the height of Danny Ford's reign and 10-2 was the epitome of a great season.
In fact I would argue that DJ leaving is the classy thing to do. It would be nice if it was after Dec 30 but that's just not really feasible today with the early signing period.
These are young adults trying to do the right thing. Give them a break. And support their choices. They love Clemson just as much as you and I do.

How well I remember the 5 and 5 records or worse. I go way back to the 50's and 60's. Those days we were doing well to get to a bowl game. I don't believe this is about loyalty; in fact, D.J. declared he's entering the portal immediately. We've got a great quarterback, Chris V., coming in 2023 already, and Cade is a superior talent. There are great days ahead for both Clemson and D.J. Clemson nation needs to focus on supporting our team in the Orange Bowl and D.J. as he explores his options.

So with this new portal world you think he should stay at CU and be a backup next year? Just curious what you think he should do?
If I was in his shoes I’d transfer. I’d see if another system or fresh scenery might be helpful. Very respectful letter. He has been a great representative Clemson. Not sure why you want to dog him.

Exactly, you would transfer, I would transfer and so would all these big talking boys whose feelings are hurt if they were in his shoes. The way the system works basically means you have to transfer now or miss practice time with your new school in the spring. It's easy say what you would do when you're not the one having to deal with the consequences. But in reality the only player on any team who would stay for a bowl after getting yanked as the starter would be one who knew he wasn't going to get an offer anyway so he might as well stay. Y'all can talk all that "I'm old school" B.S. all you want but tell me this. When was the last time you stayed at a job where you were just demoted and had no clear path for promotion again when there was a clear path to promotion and a potential multi-million dollar career at another company? Yeah, it's never happened and if it did all of us would take the second option. This isn't about DJ or Clemson, college football is a business now and this is how the business works.

He had loyalty to the team for sticking with it for this long with all the crticism he got, the family issues, injuries, and everything else. That man gave all he had and was always team first. But, how can you stay "loyal" to fans that call you trash, say you're garbage, that gives you no respect no matter how good of a game he's had. And, that man is entering the portal with a degree. He has put in his time and his dues and if he wants to hit the portal and has his degree, no body should have a word to say because first and foremost he got his education. Hard to be loyal to the fans when they aren't loyal to you.

Absolutely, and the way this has went down, I don't think it could have been put any better bc, Dabo has given him more lead way than I've ever seen another player get while stinking up the field. To be honest, DJ's play as QB has made other teammates look really bad along with himself.
From this day forward as long as there is a thing called the transfer portal, Dabo's lead way for a player's bad performance should only be two games MAX, get it together, practice harder, or sit, or hit the portal bc, you will no longer make the team, the coaching, or Clemson look bad bc you will never appreciate our patience once you have been given a break!!!! Bye Bye!!!!

I salute all of my fellow correspondents for being so positive in their reaction to the DJ news, and like you, I wish DJ all the best. He clearly is a fine young man. However . . . I was surprised today that he did not thank Dabo by name in his exit statement. There is no other coach at the elite level who would have stuck with DJ as long as Dabo did. Until the awful start against UNC, Dabo never wavered in his belief that DJ would finally live up to the potential that made him a 5-star recruit in high school. DJ owes Dabo a lot.

Y’all joked when Dabo said DJ got us to the ACC championship game this year but y’all quickly forgot when he put the team on his back and beat a solid wake team. Thanks to DJ for giving his best to Clemson FB. If any blame is to be given for his poor performance at times, that blame goes to the coaching staff. He can't do what he is incapable of doing. I wish him luck in his future as a FB player. He was and is an outstanding young man and is a great example of being a Clemson "man".

I'm sure you haven't had a single negative word to say about your Vegas strippers as of late. But 5 and 7 is probably acceptable for you. As sad as it is, plenty of us live eat and breathe Clemson football. It's always gone too quick and seems like forever to return. Time is of the essence when you only have 2 or 3 years (due to the portal and NFL) to enjoy watching a player. And Big 5 has wasted time for us and players like Shipley McFadden and many others. So, there Raider boy?

Well fella, I'm sorry to hear that you need a better life if this is what you live, eat, and breathe. Maybe the next go-round for you will be more fruitful. God Bless

Unfortunately I agree with you.
I thought of responding to some of these notes and did respond to one.
But the callousness of the remarks and the total lack of empathy really bothers me. Are the writers emblematic of the type of graduate Clemson is producing (and yes I have 2 degrees if it matters)?
Pretty sad. Instead of celebrating someone who has represented the PAW with dignity and toughness and grit, we enjoy denigrating them to move on to the next idol who I suspect we will tear down too.
It's not a video game. These are kids. Young adults. Just going to school. Keep your perspective.

Good crazy Clemson fan base in the comments. This is why we'll stop getting all these 5 stars cause these parents won't want their son in such a toxic place.

The transfer portal situations are not one size fits all…
1) I don’t always agree with those that transfer after their freshman year because things didn’t quite go their way In year 1. I think you try to earn your spot on the field and see what happens. I think Dabo tries to convey that in the recruiting process by explaining you are committing to Clemson not just football. Ultimately this isn’t going to change though, so people need to get used to it.
2) In DJ’s situation or any other upperclassmen, it’s clear his time at Clemson is over. Dabo, as stubborn as he was this year, would not have gone with him again next season. So for him to transfer (after he graduates too), it’s the right move. I know people are complaining he didn’t wait til after the bowl game, but the early signing period changes that. He needs to find a new school, and if he waits he can be left out without options.
Ultimately everyone who is a fan of college athletics better just get used to it. This is the new world we live in. I know a lot of his doesn’t matter to people on this site, but stop bashing these guys. They may be making a big mistake but ultimately it’s theirs to make.

I said it two years ago, if DJ loses the starting job he will hit the portal soon after. I wish him the best. But I’m not sure if kid’s know this or not, but teams need backup quarterbacks also. GO TIGERS!!

If a player graduates and leaves for the NFL when they could come back for a 5th year being are they disloyal and a quitter?
What about someone who only plays 3 years before leaving for the NFL?

All these people posting are the same a-holes that bashed this kid for two years. This is someone’s son. Grow up. He’s giving everything he’s had to give to this university and he earned his degree. According to the rules DJ can do this and he owes no one anything. This is about what’s best for this young man and those bashing him, I can only imagine if someone treated your child this way. Before you respond I already know what you’ll say “my child would show more respect he would show more loyalty…” to that I say BS. Like any parent you’d want what’s best for your child staying at Clemson another year benefits DJ how? Having another five star QB coming in helps him in what way?? Grow up try to be the adult in the room this young man could teach all of you a thing or two about class.

Depends on how you raise your kids I guess to a lot of us on here words like loyalty, commitment and team mates actually have meanings…makes me wonder how many of the kids on here are going to feed there families not knowing their meaning …different generations I guess…God Bless

sure hope he entered the portal as a Tight End. He has no future as a QB, if he wants to make it to the show it will be as a converted TE.
