North Carolina and Virginia. Why: 1. Basketball - Greg Sankey wants the SEC to be the best basketball conference. He has pushed for more emphasis to be put into basketball. Even though the SEC has drastically improved basketball, the SEC hasn't won a men's national championship in 12 years. The addition of the last 2 ACC national champions, would arguably make the SEC the best basketball conference. 2. TV Markets - North Carolina and Virginia would add the 9th and 12th most populous states. The SEC would have every state university in the contiguous southeastern united states. 3. Academics - Taking North Carolina and Virginia from the ACC would give the SEC 1 more AAU university than the ACC. 4. Football - The SEC don't need anymore Texas and Oklahoma caliber football schools. If you have too many elite football teams, you end up with a bunch of 6-6 teams. The reason the SEC hasn't gone to a 9 game conference schedule is because coaches complained that with the addition of Texas and Oklahoma, getting to a bowl would be too hard for the mid to lower teams. Adding North Carolina and Virginia would give ESPN the added football content. These are some of the main reasons North Carolina and Virginia will be invited to the SEC before FSU and Clemson. Most of these reasons are the same for the Big 10.

So what you are saying is the SEC is going to sit back and let the Big 10 take two of the most watched football powers out of their back yard and establish a foot print on the South?

According to reports the BG10 #1 invite Notre Dame ( BG 10 are willing to wait ) #2 invite UNC ( if SEC doesnt get them first with implosion of current ACC ) If UNC is out of BG10 picture Notre Dame wants Stanford as tag along partner. Hearing BG10 has been having 3rd party talks with Texas A&M. A&M wants out of SEC because Texas has officially become a mbr. Texas is "full-of-themselves" so says podcasters from Big12. Podcasters are glad to see the LongHorns leave. Big12 podcasters say FSU is nowhere near the complaining and disruptive partners compared to Texas ( a very strong vocal minority ) that basically ruled the Big12. Should be very interesting and entertaining to watch the fans in the SEC to welcome Texas this season.

People like you still don’t get it. You still under the assumption that things work just as they did 20 years ago or even 10 years ago. TV markets don’t matter anymore. The majority of people view their TV content through streaming services one way or another. It is no longer about certain TV markets it is about total number of views or eyeballs on the product. Nobody cares if it’s coming from the North Carolina or Virginia market or any other market out there. It only matters about the total number of viewership. Other than Norte Dame nobody gets as many football views as Clemson or FSU that is not already in the SEC or Big10. In fact Clemson gets over 3 times the views UNC gets. No way Clemson & FSU get left out. People like you can’t seem to get this through your head.

If Clemson was to go anywhere in my opinion it would be one of the Bigs (XII or X). Again just my opinion but the many talking heads seems all in step with NC and Virginia. They may be false assumptions on all their parts but I do not think so. I would be fine with either of them. Just want the revenue to remain competitive. I do believe the ACC under its inept leadership made some bad decisions in the teams they brought on board and have made us ( A LOT) less appealing to the major networks in getting a fair price in revenue. Agree geography is non existent. Anyone in the US could end up anywhere. Local rivalries would be great for the fans but with the rising cost of tickets, parking and the monies paid for tv I do not believe they really care about the fans. It’s all about the money.

I can't dispute your point about the number of eyes on Clemson and FSU football. But...maybe the point is there are enough eyes watching UNC and Virginia and the SEC wants to grab the basketball viewership.

UNC, sure thing, basketball is in their blood. But to say that about Virginia is basically saying the SEC or BIG wants Tony Bennett because he is their basketball program. UVA was decent in the 80s but overall is nowhere near a blue blood of basketball in history. Would be a head scratcher decision to bring UVA for basketball on a strategic level.

BB is attractive....but it doesn't bring in the money, but the educational and new territory...although we have learned new territory doesn't bring in new money either (see countless big market examples). NO ONE cares abt UVA FB and little abt UNC FB. Their rating suck. But....UNC and UVA will end up in P2....

No conference expansion has ever been about basketball in this modern era & the next one won’t have anything to do about basketball. And as far as viewers. Virginia averages somewhere between 350,000 & 400,000 viewers per football game. That is pathetic. No cares about Virginia football. By comparison Clemson usually averaged around 3 million per view.

Can't assume Clemson's viewership will continue to be so high. Each year we miss the playoffs or get destroyed in big games will hurt viewership. Also, watch how the SEC viewership will grow even larger this year with the addition of Texas and Oklahoma.

I am continuously amazed at all of the marketing experts on this Board who feel team viewership is defined by state lines.
I suppose that is the reason networks often black-out games in the "viewing areas"?

Have you seen the fan support in football for those two, it’s laughable, they would be the bottom of the barrel batting it out with pecking birds of S.C. for last place.
You need to go to a UNC game & a Virginia game or two, they don’t care much about football & neither are considered football schools. Remember what Danny said about Virginia lol.

That sounds good. But the North Carolina Legislature has tied the future fate of UNC and NC State. You can't take one without the other. And the SEC isn't going to take them both. Go Tigers!

UNC and UVA football are not the most watched in the south. From the charts I have seen their football viewership is terrible. Even Louisville in the ACC is better. Basketball is not making the money- Football is still driving the bus.

Anyone and everyone please please stop talking about markets like it’s still 2010. TV markets don’t mean squat. If the SEC and B1G expands Clemson will absolutely be one of the top teams in consideration. UNC is too but that’s because of their brand. They are a big brand and who on occasion has a decent football team but mostly great basketball. They draw eyes from all over the country. Academics mean absolutely nothing in this expansion talk. It’s about money and power. UVA doesn’t make any since.

As others have already mentioned, it isn't about TV markers or state lines.

It used to be, but now it's about total viewership, regardless of where it comes from.
Football is driving the bus. I don't see any conference making a decision that prioritizes basketball, especially if the tradeoff is a lackluster or inconsistent football program.
Despite its basketball history, UNC football isn't going to improve the SEC's football reputation. It wouldn't hurt it, but it wouldn't help it either. However, if UNC sports (especially football) would garner more eyeballs and help with a new and improved TV contract, then they become very attractive.
I don't see Virginia being attractive. They don't provide notable viewership numbers to significantly alter a new TV deal for a conference. Their football program is lackluster and would likely struggle even more in the SEC. Their basketball program is good, but I don't get the feeling that they have a widespread basketball fan base.
