New Story: Venables on defensive woes: "Guys will come out swinging"

Venables on defensive woes: "Guys will come out swinging"

The numbers for the defense aren’t pretty. Clemson gave up 464 total yards to Pitt Saturday, 156 on the ground and 308 through the air. Twenty-three first downs in 71 plays. Forty-three points. Over six yards per play and four scores in four red zone possessions. Brent Venables thinks his defense will respond. Full Story »

Was very tough to watch them torch us with the shovels. I think what really kept things going for them was their tempo, it really kept our fans out of the game, what with quick snaps and random line shuffling. It sucks to lose and the refs handing two tds to them doesn't help, I just hope we bounce back and win out! Go tigers!

Maybe if Dabo would have gotten a 25k fine from his post game comments, it would bring more attention to the need for reform in our conference officiating. No excuse for losing however!

Quick snaps? They're a huddling team. What game were you watching??

Umm... actually, yes they quicksnapped the ball about a dozen times just in the first half.

In fact, the announcers made comments about how Pitt would go uptempo after making an initial first down. They had quite a few quick snaps and caught our defense unprepared a couple of times.

Oh you're right. All the pre-snap back & forth motion and all. Pretty quick at snapping. Riiiight......

The fact still remains that the refs played against us with helping them out with two bogus calls that can cripple any team when it happens the way those calls ended in scores when they were stopped on 3d down and would have had to punt. We could have scored on those two possessions, but even if we hadn't of scored on either of those two possessions, they wouldn't have either. Every play in any type of a physical sport can be the difference in winning or losing. The phantom holding call was just total BS, and the tackle to rough on Ben was total BS. I'm absolutely 100% honest when I say the game was taken from an awesome group of guys that fought hard against a difficult offence to stop, and those two 3d down stops that were illegally stolen by the zebras were enough to make the difference between a win and a loss. Hopefully the playoff guys a smart enough to see that the game was taken from us and not won by Pitt bc that is the actual case. Bad calls are made in every FB game, but when it's obvious it's intentional, the zebras have gone to far and changes should be made in this crew of ACC zebras being paid to call a far and honest game that they are not doing. When the TV commentators admit that those two calls were bad calls against Clemson, they must have been bad calls bc they hardly ever side with us unless the bad calls are that blatant for them to comment on when it's against us, and we will very rarely see or hear of that happening when it's happening to us....

Love me some BV ... but too late to "swing" after game

Nov 12, 2016, 11:45 PM

Pitt was more aggressive, more physical, outcoached and outplayed us, and even with the assist from bone-headed ACC refs played well enough to win.

Not sure how many natl championships BV has won, but life offers only so many chances. This Clemson team had way more talent and way less hunger than Pitt today. Hopefully, with Mich & Wash losses, we will stay in hunt. Go Tigers!
