It's so tough being the best team in the land and having 4 of the very best QB's to choose from.
Whew!!!

If we knew for a fact that....

TL was willing to stay through a RS senior season one day, that would be awesome if we could redshirt him. We could honestly lose 3 QB's after this next season possibly. Bryant is one of course, and then if Lawrence jumps Brice and Johnson on the depth charts and shines, maybe those 2 leave as well? It will be interesting to say the least.

Or that might end up with him going after his rs so season. I really hope we get as many years as we can out of him. From what coaches, media, etc... says is that he is well beyond dw4 at this point. That is scary to think about.

I do agree with you! I do drink the "Orange Kool-Ade", but we certainly have talent to drool over. Hate wishing my life away, but I anxiously await FB season. This one will be very special! IMO

That sounded like to me, Dabo likes what has with the QBs that he has signed, but it also sounded like KB is his QB if he doesn't have a mental break down, and it won't have anything to do with his inability of accuracy with the deep ball. And personally, I see that type of loyalty hurting us in recruiting wide receivers in the future if we have a starter with less than stellar accuracy with their passing attempts. When a team has as many top receivers as we have and try to keep in our offense, a passing QB with stellar accuracy is a must have with several top receivers!!! Just saying without meaning anything personal about coaches or players. Just saying that a Clemson QB will have to be more than a good character person, more than a good leader, more than a good runner. Our QB will have to be all of those plus having great accuracy with their arm... Being all of that is a MUST have, or all of our offensive parts can't and won't be satisfied or happy without a complete QB that can do it all and be very sufficient at doing it!!! And this is my personal opinion for our team to succeed at the highest level!!!

Unsure of where you went there, but liked what I understood

The Defense was epic last year and the Offense played in spurts like a Porsche in 2nd and 3rd gear. Much of the time the Offense was in neutral to avoid mistakes while going three and out and watching the Defense stay on the field to seal the wins.
It worked ... but Clemson was not playing its most talented players at all positions. And in 2018 the talent disparity at QB position will be even greater.

In 2016, Clemson's 14 victories were by an average of 22.79 points. Last year's 12 wins were by 24.75 points. The loss to 'Bama really did change the perception. Before the playoff game the Tigers were rolling.

Did you take out special teams and defensive touchdowns for each year?
In victories in 2016 we averaged 39 points per game, this past year we averaged 36.3 points per game, which means that our defense was roughly 4.5 points better in victories in 2017 than in 2016.

Granted. However, both teams rolled to a number of victories. The point differentials between '16 and '17 were not big. Offense better in '16. Defense better in '17. Let's hope the offense picks it up a bit this year, with more explosiveness. The D should be superb. GooooooooTigers!!!!!!!!!!

Dabo would be cutting his own throat if he showed favoritism toward TL or any of the backups over KB at this point. KB's confidence would be damaged and we aren't yet sure if either of the three others can carry this team better than KB did last year. Your point is well taken about it being a must to have a passer with stellar accuracy, but KB could be improved. It's just way to early to make any kind of decisions or even show favor with the QB situation. Some say that KB won't have time to learn a new position by waiting until the season starts, but that's putting the cart before the horse. We just have to be patient and wait it out. The best will play and others my transfer. If it happens, it happens. These kids knew the situation they were coming in to when they signed. Clemson has so much to offer besides a starting job your freshman year. Maybe these guys see that.

Not sure how playing your most talented QB is showing "favoritism." And if KB is "damaged" by competition, he shouldn't be playing at this level.

Yes he does make good points but pretty much what everyone else has said. As far as kb getting better. He’s had 4 years under stellar leadership and DW4. Lots of good golfers out there but there is just that little extra they don’t have to be on tour. If that makes sense.
Nothing wrong with it either. Kb could start for a lot of teams just like Jalen hurts but just not quite enough for that next step.

Your comment says that Dabo would cut his throat if he didn't play KB. Dabo would cut his throat if he doesn't play the best players we have on the roster regardless of how long the best player has been on the team as he has said he would do. So I don't believe anyone would complain about our HC playing the best players he has regardless of position bc, that is what fans expect him to do!!!

Nick Saban vehemently disagrees with you. He wants us to close the competition now and just go with it. He’s the one who experiments with QBs when things aren’t going right, not Clemson. How dare we start thinking we can try something out when things aren’t working in the big game. That’s his deal.

It is a good thing Dabo did not have any daughters with these guys roaming around campus. It is always the backup qb that ends up with the coaches daughter and we have 3 of them.

More of the same if you remember the last 3+ years. Dabo won't commit early but always favors the vet. He gets to see the competition and his position coaches seem to accede to his preferences, at least at QB and WR. It is what it is, and maybe it's just right. Time'll tell.

Watson missed most of spring practice, and still saw the field in games 1 and 2, and took over as our starting QB by the 3rd series of game #3. At receiver, Hopkins, Watkins, Peake, Bryant, Mike Williams, Cain, McCloud, and Renfrow are just names off the top of my head who have played a great deal right away. Higgins also saw the field ahead of several older players at receiver, and a true freshman led the team in running back carries this past season. Not sure where this idea of not playing the best guy comes from.

No it isn't right when you have the talent that committed to play with our offense playing like it was with DW4, and they expect on us to have a HJ or a TL ready to play so that they can have a chance to make down field plays and scoring TDs and having a chance to break our TD records for a season!!!

Can’t believe cmoney would lmao at allorange response when he knows its right. You don’t get 5* Justyn Ross or tee once a patern emerges that you’re playing with a qb like kb. No offense to kb. Too many other places those kids can go and get a downfield passer.
Just as I could have quaranteed the first few posts from allorange etc was going to get td’s. Pretty much exactly what’s going on in politics now. Everyone wants to be right, no one wants to listen, and God forbid you say a perceived negative about their guy.
You have to look at all sides. Dabo is learning too. He’s never been in this situation... having so much talent. Not the same as DW4. He was so much better than any reserve qb. Would he have played if his backups were hj and tl, chase etc? Don’t know.

My opinion won't be popular, but I hope we have a different QB than KB. He started out last season with pretty good passing accuracy, and actually throwing down field effectively. Later in the season it was as if he lost some confidence in his throwing ability, and it killed us in the AL game. Inability to get the ball to our great receivers is a shame.

Duga is point on. Pretty much after he got hurt. Just went cold, maybe the injury affected him. Don’t know. However, that’s the story of kb’s career. Look brilliant in spots... but he never has been a passer to get it downfield and hit receivers in stride and or throw them open.

They are all starters. No QB battle, all pull for each other. With this much talent, draw straws, who gets first series, second, 3rd, 4th, then draw straws again. Can you imagine trying to prepare for 4 diff qb's you know you will face in a game, or each series? Take starting QB controversy out of equation. Make it like our d-line feeding off of each other.

Auburn tried that! Center exchanges, snap count cadence or hand slap, and speed off the ball are just three of the variables in the equation that says that won't work long term. Gotta pick one and go.

Dabo's not
Mar 6, 2018, 9:14 AM
|
|
Naming a starter in March, nor May...nor July. Yes, he's had some...some...history of targeting the senior players, although mitigating circumstances typically come into play. There is zero chance DW4 wasn't going to start his first game, or play significantly more, had he not broken his collarbone in spring practice.
Regardless, Dabo & Company will put the absolute best chance of victory on the field right from the start. He has three men who returned for one purpose...one purpose alone. And it wasn't to see a repeat performance of last year's offense, rest assured. If KB can make the year over year improvement, then fine. If he can't, welcome to 'Life'. Jalen accepted it...Kelly will, too.

To be fair, we only "dropped" one game last year in the regular season with him.
Not saying he should, or shouldn't, be the QB, just wanting to point that out.

True. But to be even more fair. He was less than mediocre in the AL game. And let's not forget the games that were much closer than they should have been because of Bryant's passing ineffectiveness. See NC State & GA Tech. And we didn't have a comfortable lead against Boston College until the 4th quarter due to the ineptness of the passing game.

I'm not debating that he was mediocre in the AL game, the whole offense was.
The NC State game certainly wasn't one of his best, but it was on the road and State had a pretty salty defense this year. The BC game he wasn't good at all, again the whole offense struggled but the passing game especially did.
You lost me with the GT game though, we were up 24-3 at the start of the 3rd quarter and called off the dogs. KB was pretty solid that game.
As I mentioned, I'll let the coaches sort it out and I'm not saying he should, or shouldn't, be the starter. Ultimately I think it will be Lawrence's team at some point in the season and for the following two years.

All I know is we have had the talent to win the NC since 2014,4 seasons in a row . This will be the 5th year. It would be a complete shame to go 1-5 , it’s time to start coaching this talent into a NC machine.

Maybe if DW4 was healthy all of 2014, but I don't think we had all the talent in place to win it that year.
But going 1-4, or 5, is no where near a complete shame. 0-fer would be a complete shame, it's not easy to win these things though.

We had Swag? If you mean Swag Kelly he was not on the team in 2014 as he was dismissed in Spring of 2014.
We had a great defense but had terrible offensive woes, especially after DW4 was hurt.

If he would have been starting over Cole I’m sure he would have had a better attitude. It all started after the spring game where he thought he was getting the shaft.

Well that's on him then. Depth charts aren't set in stone after the spring game, as that season indicated.
On top of that his antics off the field following his leaving of Clemson shows that Dabo made the correct choice in dismissing him from the team.

I'm not saying that team didn't have a lot of talent, it did, but it was young talent that blossomed over the next two years.
We did not have enough to win it that year, as shown by the fact we didn't even win the ACC, but our depth grew dramatically over the next year and the following year.
We had injuries in both 2015 and 2016 and still overcame to make it, and win it, which is not something the 2014 team could do.

Do you think we could have won the acc in 15 and 16 without DW4?

I'm not sure what that has to do with anything, but probably not both years.
The key difference in these scenarios is that in 2014 we're doing a what if and the two following years are a what happened type of thing.

If DW starts the FSU game we would have won We could never get in a flow with CS and with DW starting that game we jump on them early. Instead we let them hang around and at home they got the breaks to win.

The GT game if DW stays healthy we win by 20 . The only way GT could win that game is just how they won it. CS gave it to them. I know Kelly was a prick but it would have been nice to see him start the season and maybe DW redshirts

There is no way we would've redshirted DW, just no way.
Kelly was a prick, and we let him go because of that. All things considered it worked out pretty good for us.

DW was skinny as a rail in 2014 and yeah he was prolly to good to redshirt but if Kelly leads the team like he did at ole Miss, it’s possible

Cole played in the first 3 series (one of which was a missed 23 yard field goal) and when DW4 came in we were only down 3-0, and didn't get a TD until his 3rd drive.
Should he have started? Yes. Does that mean we still would've won? No. Remember we were driving to win the game when Davidson fumbled. In 2015 or 2016 Gallman would've been in in those situations, which is a huge increase in talent.
Let us also not forget that Jameis wasn't playing in that game either, so we had plenty of opportunities to win, regardless of who started and who played more (DW played just shy of 50 minutes of game time) we didn't win.
So again, not sure how we had the talent to win it all in 2014, not sure how winning a championship, losing one to a great Bama team, and losing again to Bama is a "complete shame."

You said “We had injuries in both 2015 and 2016 and still overcame to make it, and win it, which is not something the 2014 team could do.”
We have a shot at making the playoffs in 2014 if DW doesn’t get hurt. We likely don’t name the playoffs in 15 and 16 in DW is hurt. There was plenty of talent to make the playoffs on the 2014 team, as shown when DW played.

Show me where the rest of the talent was at that time.
Gallman was a true freshman, our 3rd leading receiver was Germone Hopper, our top receiving tight end was a Jordan Leggett that caught 14 passes all year, and you're also forgetting that Stoudt was injured as well which put us at an even greater disadvantage.
We had talent, but not the depth to make it that year.
If Mike Williams doesn't get hurt in 2015 do we beat Bama in the National Championship? What if Mackensie Alexander doesn't get hurt?
Lastly, the 2014 team had 0 offensive draft picks, 2015 had Peake and Brooks (both 7th round), 2016 had 4 in the first 4 rounds. Those 4 were young in 2014, and as they got older they got better, which gave us the playoff appearances.
It's certainly not that hard.

Haha. No it’s not that hard.
If Watson starts against FSU, we win. If Watson doesn’t get injured against GT, we win. That gets us into the playoffs.
Dude you sure have a lot of people that disagree with you all the time. I wonder why that is?

As I pointed out regarding the FSU game, DW4 played 50 minutes of that game plus OT. In no way did him not starting that game cause us to lose it.
We fumbled the ball going in for the score to win the game, which DW not starting had no bearing on that.
On top of that, looking at the other teams that were in the playoff that year we would not have had as good of wins as Bama, Oregon, Ohio State, TCU, or Baylor. Hell, FSU was undefeated and the 3rd seed.
Again, you keep going back to the "if this, if that" scenarios, what actually happened shows that we were not deep enough to go to the playoffs that year.
As to people "disagreeing" with me, well, you stating that is irony in it's purest form.

Watson wouldn’t have spiked a 7 yard pass in the dirt like stoudt did when trying to hit Leggett for a td on stoudts last drive (the drive where we missed the short Fg). That would have changed the game completely.
But yeah, those are what ifs. Just like your using by saying they wouldn’t have won those games. Obviously we can’t really have this discussion without them. If you can’t see that Watson led offense was good enough to win the acc that year, that’s on you. The talent was there. Obviously the defense was there too.
You just seem to get into these 8 page thread “discussions” every day. Seemingly with someone different. Just saying. I guess it’s everyone else huh?

Actually Stoudt came in for the next drive, and DW4 came in after that (still took him 3 drives for a TD). That's neither here nor there though.
Seeing as how they didn't win those games (agree with GT), it's not really a "what if." Remember that DW4 played 50 minutes against FSU plus OT. We also only scored one TD in the second half (all with DW4) and missed another FG. Perhaps if the FG talent was better that year we would have been in a better spot for the playoffs as you've suggested.
My sincerest apologies that I don't agree with your point of view, solely regarding the fact that we were not a playoff contender that year. We were good, we were talented (which we've been for this whole decade), but we were young on offense and that is what "held us back" that year.
If I'm involved in an "8 page thread discussions" (which why do you have pages?) then it's simply because I'm discussing something and others are obviously responding, furthering said discussion (as you have here).
Regardless, you have a good night and Go Tiger Baseball.

Nope, stoudt spiked the pass to Leggett. Go to 9:40 in the video. If we score that td, we take an early lead nd put the pressure on. I agree DW had plenty of other chances to win it, but that td would have really helped. He completes that with his eyes closed, as he did later in the game.
Have a good night yourself, hopefully the tigers can come back and get the w.

Yeah, that was a pretty pathetic pass. Although he was just a half a second from being sacked.

I agree. His inability to hit open receivers in stride hurt us last year close to ten times. About 5 of those 10 he missed long and the others were so under thrown that the defensive back had time to close the distance because the receiver had to either slow down or stop to try to catch the ball.

Does struggling to put teams away you mean having 3 score leads in the fourth quarter in 10 of 14 games?
