New Story: From bottle dodging to the final score, it was Clemson's night

Nov 27, 2017, 7:01 AM

From bottle dodging to the final score, it was Clemson's night

Early Sunday morning, around 1:30 a.m., TigerNet’s tired group of five exited the Williams-Brice Stadium press box and made the long trek back to our vehicles, camera bags and laptop bags in tow. As we reached the back side of the stadium, one lonely “Beat Clemson” sticker was stuck to the sidewalk, it’s shine trampled off by thousands of feet. Full Story »

Good line DHood!

Enjoy your work my friend! Of course, when the message is good news, it IS always better received. However, your ability to paint the picture from your presence and experience(s), whether on the practice field, the sidelines, the locker rooms, and other places most of us cannot go, is much appreciated.

I also appreciate Crump and Bmeist’s support of the veterans and my free tnet membership, but now see I need to go ahead and ante up the $$ for a paid membership. I would hate to lose you and any of the rest of the staff (especially Nikki ??), so I shall do my part to support your six figure salaries and lavish travel expense budgets you so richly deserve!

Nov 27, 2017, 9:27 AM [ in reply to Re: New Story and “...beat the brakes off them.” ]

Uncle Bill, I became a paying member shortly after joining T-Net in 2007, and the pay membership is less than a Clemson Hoodie from the Tiger apparel shops. I have enough of Tiger apparel to last me for the rest of my life for sure, but my wife keeps ordering it for me and I never complain. As for the T-Net pay membership I bye for myself and when I think about the cost for a year membership, it cost less than what I spent at Chili's last night, and I enjoy the T-Net membership much more than I enjoyed the Chili's meal and drinks. It's things like that, that makes paying the T-Net membership much easier to pay than paying for that meal and drinks at Chili's. So I can tell you that when dew's are dew I will PayPal the fees every year and the only time I ever give it a thought is when I click for PayPal to send the cost of my membership and I'm good for another year with the advantages that pay members get. And being able to delete a post I made from being pisssed makes being a pay member worth it. And I have deleted a lot of regretted post in my 10 years of being a paid member. It also allows you to correct spelling of your post hopefully before the spelling Police can slap your wrist. Enjoy your paid membership!!!

Thanks, for showing and telling the truth about the reality of the situation the team faced. The actions of their fans have only added to the stigma this institute has long been known for. They have no aptitude in their being to define good sportsmanship.

There not only is a wide gap in talent between the two programs, but a very wide gap in culture, i.e. Dabo visiting the Syracuse locker room to congratulate their team after their win. It is truly great to be a Tiger.

Officials can give a sideline warning for teams drifting on the field. I’m with DS in criticizing the refs for not doing more to maintain safety. We have individual players, team captains & coaches that should have had a “good talking to” with promised penalties, followed by announcement on stadium PA system.(Maybe that happened, but ESPN seemed to always cut away ... avoiding controversy, I guess) Water is heavy and dangerous when thrown. Sad!

THhe ESPN announcers said some of the SCAR players threw some of the bottles back into the stands. Although I agree with the player’s thought process, how does that not draw a penalty on the players??!!

I took it that they were throwing them back because they were upset with the fans, and the players knew there was a chance a penalty could be called against them. I think the players were trying to do damage control to their credit.

As I watched the game from my table at Gordon Ramsay's Pub and Grill in Las Vegas, probably the only person paying attention to it, I was mortified that the behavior of their fans reflected poorly on our state. Sure, we have some morons who cant behave and believe the 1 finger wave is appropriate for TV, but my gorsh, they seemed to have cornered the market!
From the first sideline tackle and mugging of Kelly to every single play with extracurricular activity, it looked like their game plan was "if you can't beat them, beat on them". I heard little from their players and coach about the behavior. Secretly, I think they were proud. Sad way to be.

I'm sure there were Carolina fans in the stands who were embarrassed, but what were they supposed to do? The idiots took over. And the "authorities" did little to stop it. Next year, I hope Clemson administers another 56-7 beat down.

Tavien Feaster summed it up when he said the behavior of their fans and players did not surprise him and that it basically comes down to the difference between two coaches. I’m so glad our players get it. And that Dabo keeps preaching it!

Re: New Story: From bottle dodging to the final score, it was Clemson's night

Nov 27, 2017, 12:17 PM

The Gamecock fans do actually relish that they create a hostile, over the edge environment there. That combined with the all the after the play hijinks (unrestrained by their coach) of the Gamecock players. I have never more enjoyed a ball game than Saturday night. Our kids showed a great deal of class by not getting drawn in to the post-play crap the Gamecocks were being allowed to do. The Tigers just let their play on the field make their statement for them (and emptied three fourths of the stadium in the process). The Gamecocks, all 8 of their wins coming against teams with losing records, got schooled on preparation, talent, dedication, and developed skill.

As for all the crap being thrown at the field and our players, Gamecock fans are blaming it on the Tigers walking toward the student section. The Tiger Walk done before the team breaks off into position drills has been around since Dabo became head coach. They knew it was coming. They do it every game. They do it every Clemson Carolina game. Gamecock fans were just using it as an excuse for being poor sports (even before the ball game started, wow!) and it continued sporadically throughout the ball game. So, Gamecock fans, this was not just a pregame thing. Why else would Dabo go nuts during the middle of the ball game? Because it continued well into the ball game.

The only way that I can see that would truly stop such things is for the NCAA or at least the conferences to step in and agree that if anything (ANYTHING) gets thrown from the stands to the playing surface once...it's a fifteen yard penalty and a public address warning. If it happens again, it should be somehow an automatic safety against the home team and then apply the post-safety free kick rules where in this case the home team would have to immediately turn the ball back over to the visiting team.

The only way to stop the antics in Columbia is for it to cost the team points!

It would be very difficult to enforce such a rule

Nov 27, 2017, 2:04 PM [ in reply to Re: New Story: From bottle dodging to the final score, it was Clemson's night ]

If you're going to penalize the home team the first time something comes flying out of the stands and onto the field, who's to say it came from a home-team fan? What if the away team really needed an automatic first down, and a ethics-challenged fan threw a bottle out there? Even if the refs saw the person who did it, it might not be possible to say for sure which team should get penalized. This is about fans being jerks. I'm sure there are already stadium rules that allow a patron to be removed for throwing objects. Put the onus on security personnel and stadium administrators. If that's too much trouble, wrap the whole section in chicken wire.

Misbehaving visitors not an issue at Willy-B

Nov 27, 2017, 3:00 PM

Visiting fans who misbehave quickly get escorted out of the stadium at Willy-B. Home fans will point them out to security.

If it comes from the visitors section, it will be obvious.

then put them behind nets. Baseball has netting to protect the fans from flying projectiles from the players, football at SC might need netting to protect the players from the fans.

Nov 27, 2017, 3:20 PM [ in reply to Re: New Story: From bottle dodging to the final score, it was Clemson's night ]

Actually it should be after the first warning, a forfeiture of the game bc some of those coot fans don't care about the penalties if they believe they are going to get beat bc they came ready to start trouble. And, a forfeiture of the game would cause the fans that really care about their FB program would start to police them selves the next time that it happens. If that was a Clemson fan doing that in DV, they would get pointed out in a heart beat....

#### impressive win

Nov 27, 2017, 2:56 PM

Watching the game again, what we did was MORE impressive than I realized and, arguably, a more impressive win than in 2016.

The Gamecocks were right, this was a MUCH better team than we faced in 2016. This was not the same team we were giving piggyback rides to in 2016. They came out and, early on, did a lot of what they needed to do.

It didn't matter.

Our players didn't get rattled. They executed at a high level. They kept composure throughout the game. They are a well-coached, well-disciplined team.

In contrast, you could see SC get frustrated when things weren't going their way, then give up when they knew they had been beat.

This is a letter to Carolina fans from a Carolina graduate:

Savannah Stephens is attending Clemson at South Carolina Football Game at Williams-Brice Stadium.
November 26 at 1:46pm · Columbia, SC ·

Dear Carolina,
Let me preface by saying that I’m not a Clemson fan, but do I respect their program, their coach, and the way they play their game? Absolutely.
Yesterday, I was able to walk campus, have a full heart, and remember why I fell in love with Carolina in the first place, but when I got to Willy B that was shattered.
I am disappointed. I am heartbroken. I can’t wrap my head around what happened last night.
While sitting in the upper deck for the first time not as a student, I had the worst experience I’ve ever had in Williams Brice. I felt disrespected, but even worse I felt terrible for my Clemson husband who I thought would be able to enjoy the game. Since when do we think it’s okay to throw pretzels, flip opposing fans the bird, and tell them to go home to their incest family? Who have we become?
To the student who I asked to be quiet during the invocation and who told me Jesus isn’t real, I pray and hope that you represent my alma mater better than that to all walks of life.
To the man behind me who told me that if Clemson was fighting the Taliban that you would bring towels screaming and fight to kill Clemson... I hope you know that we choose to serve in the military to defend your freedoms for you to even be able to say things like that and there are people out there dying for you every single day.
To the students throwing towels, trash, and whatever else - do you throw trash on the floor in your home? Do you throw full water bottles at your friends? Williams Brice is OUR home. It’s a place where people bring their families, their children. It’s a place where people build lifelong memories and experience 2001 and Sandstorm like nowhere else - but last night you took that away.
To the girls who were wearing very minimal clothing when it was sub 40 degrees outside, I can’t find the words to say, but I can say that I miss the cowboy boots and black dresses that our student section used to rock so well.
We were given the opportunity to play a great team on the national stage and we blew it. We made a FOOL of ourselves on the national stage. Is it about the score of the game? No. Is it about how much alcohol we can pound and how many cuss words we can throw around at other fans? No. It’s about the Southern hospitality we were given the opportunity to show and again we blew it.
I hope this isn’t a trend. I hope this behavior ends immediately. My heart is broken that our students, fans, and friends think that this behavior is acceptable. If you want our team to be better and continue to watch our team prosper under an amazing coaching staff - then you HAVE to be better. Is our team going to be better when the entire stadium leaves at halftime because they’re pouting about the game? No.
We all need to grow up and get a grip on reality. I can’t say I disagree with Dabo when he said last night was a total embarrassment not just for our school, but for our state.
Be better. Be the Carolina family we’re suppose to be.
Sincerely,
A heartbroken Carolina alum
#UofSC #Gamecocks #SCARvsCLEM

As a Clemson fan, I also ask our students and fans too refrain from making remarks that are derogatory toward another team. Come on young people; like she said Clemson fans are better than this.
