Friday afternoon student ticket update: The latest
When the news broke earlier this week that Clemson’s athletic department was considering a plan to charge students for lower deck football tickets, it was met with skepticism, passion, and plenty of opinions on both sides of the fence. What's the latest? Full Story » |

Athletic department needs to find another spokesperson ...

... because the guy quoted in this article made me ascertain the following:
1) We need to generate revenue and we don't care how we do it. 2) We decided to get it from the students, but we didn't really think (or care too much) what that entailed. His responses to "Is the hill a reserved area now?" and "Can the students sale the tickets to general public or only to other students?" were both "We don't know yet." So you came up with a plan to charge someone for a commodity without determining the rules for using that commodity (and if you have the right to even stipulate rules for the commodity).
Not very "free market" sounding responses.

Announce it now to give students a heads up on what is coming while you are working out the details. People complain because you don't have the details.
AnnOunce it later when you do have the details and it is close to the deadline for dUes and people complain you didn't give them any warning.

Or not go at all. I'll bet for $225 you could probably find a ticket outside the stadium for all the home games, except USC, and still have pizza money left over. The Spirit Club that blows up all the balloons get a ticket for their efforts. Where they going? Upper level? CLEMSON AD is nickel and diming the wrong people.

Looks like DRad and the Athletic Dept came up with a 24 month "Plan" the same way Delta Tau Chi did in Animal House...and they are just as "stupid enough to carry it out". I don't care how "others do it"...we are Clemson, let's lead and let others follow. Just leave things alone."THE HILL" is iconic to Clemson, recognized nationwide (including Recruits) and special...Don't mess with "THE HILL".

Cutting costs by 2 percent would solve DRAD'sS problem and not make it a student problem.

What if he told you cutting that 2% would have meant not recruiting at Gainesville High School? Still feel the same? (ie...no DW4, he goes to UGA...)

only mentioning as you never know where that 2% cut would be done at...recruiting? facilities? Coach salary increases that could cost a coach down the line? That'd be the tricky part...what if the spot they cut costs the program something that isn't realized until it's too late (like recruiting a QB like DW4)...

How about we get it by not doing the $63,500,000.00 renovation to littlejohn?
How about get creative and sell $10 tickets in Littlejohn for everyone that didn't get a game ticket to watch the game in the shade on a big screen?
How about we stop ignoring the fact that the campus is filled with booze on game days already and start selling beet?
Some combination of these options would get you the same about of funding with little to no negative side effects. Instead he looks greedy as hell and is alienating the breeding ground of Clemson fans. Students shouldn't have to choose between a fee and terrible seating. Not everyone going to Clemson starts as a football fan. I had never watched a college football game before my freshman year there and would have been too poor to fork up $225 for a sport I didn't care about. But free tickets have made me a lifetime fan and supporter.
Colleges really need to start looking at students are Clients instead of revenue sources.

$225 for the lower deck. You set an assigned seat, and it's only transferable to another student.
Current students have to pay for football tickets.
Alumni lived in asbestos filled barracks.

The football operations building should have been cut back. That is how you balance a buget. The football expenses are way out of hand and can be cut with better use of $$$ and still have no effect on winning. The come up up with ways to spend money.

Sounds like they need to leave the ticket issue alone. Students bring a new level of excitement to any game. They are loud and proud to cheer on The Tigers in all events. Just because other schools charge their students, does that follow the old saying, " if Henry jumps off the cliff are you gonna jump off too? There has to be other ways to cut costs (ie deficit from 2014) than charge students for lower tickets but give away free tickets in upper deck. The 7 home games this previous season, their were not many, if any empty seats anywhere in the stadium. I know in my section, even with the purchased seatbacks, you could not even sit down because all seats were full. GO TIGERS!!!

I just can't understand why the football team needs the Clemson students. The students couldn't be the reason the university exists. Or the reason the football team exists.
We used to be family, with traditions and honor among us. I learned a lot from Dr. Edward's Clemson. Maybe we could do with a few more alumni administrators and a few less sports professionals.
Give the kids and their parents a break. Let them form the loyalties to last a lifetime.

If this about revenue, then no free tickets for anyone. No comp tickets for players, coaches ,President Clements, BOT, IPTAY ,football staff and any other free loader. The President 's box must be paid for as well. At least everyone will be equally pissed off and not just one group. Maybe Dabo will have an opinion as well.

That hits the nail square on the head!!! The people that get the free bsssss like box seats with all the luxuries that come with them, are the ones that's always wanting the less fortunate paying more when they haven't paid a fking nickel for what they receive for FREE. If they were paying for their luxuries, they would be the first kicking, screaming, and crying if they had to pay a few dollars more to generate more revenue.

I wish I could smack people right in the frigging face with this post!!! ???????? This is sheer brilliance and the most common sensible approach I've seen in a looooong time! Awesome! Cheers, hear-here!!!
Funny how all these new-aged political genius youth & university folks wanna charge everyone else and take their money......that they "owe" society or the university all of the sudden.....but that totally ruins the attraction for all and the tradition and whatnot. It's like promising everyone they'll get to pet a real tiger, but drugging it or restraining it in a cage where it can't even move, then expecting it to mean something. At some point we'll definitely have to take a stand between TigerPride and all tradition, or all this money. I know, I know....gotta keep up with the Jones's, huh...? ??
Go Tigers!

Ludicrous and ridiculous is what this notion seems like to me-------------the idea that Clemson is NOT keeping up with everyone else in the 'power 5'????? Are you kidding me? Do we have to charge the students whose current school this is for 6-7 football tickets per season to 'keep up'????
Do we REALLY NOT want our excited and enthusiastic student crowd to be in the lower deck------where they SHOULD be as students and where the TV cameras can VIEW them up close and LOVE to show them cheering on our Tigers????? Do we REALLY NOT want them in the right spot so that our cheerleaders can lead these student participants during the game???? Each student only has 4 years (ok, maybe 4.5 or 5 years)to sit in the student section; do we really want to take this away from them?
Obviously, this is another ploy for the almighty dollar; to allow these seats to be sold to the highest IPTAY donor bidders!!!!! Do we really want the 'Clemson family' as we call it to fall to the almighty dollar being the bottom line????? I really consider Clemson to be somewhat above that, at least to a degree.
I AM an IPTAY donor and have been since I graduated in 1982 and I was somewhat OK with going with the seat equity plan when that came out a few years ago. Bowing to that, I am still sitting where I have been sitting for many years (and close to where I sat as a 5-year old child coming with my parents, one being a '54 graduate). Students can not and should not have to compete with adults in the working world that may have a choice whether to pay full seat prices and equity!!!!
Shameful is what I call this ploy to get more money at the expense of the students------for whom the school is ultimately there! Please don't be like all the other schools----------keep some of that good 'ole Clemson Tiger spirit and save some of the student experience for the current students!!!!!

Keep up with the Power 5?? Maybe they should keep up with us. Our student section and overall gameday atmosphere are tops in the country, hands down. Why in the world would DRad want to monkey with those dynamics. If revenues are a problem, maybe the athletic department should try looking at expenditures first.

I agree, Clemson used to be something special. Students got free tickets for decent lower level seats and atmosphere has been 2nd to none. We had a head coach whose life story was/IS something to admire, and he openly admitted he did not get into coaching for the money. Yet, here we are, with a contract worth 5 million/year and yet even has a bonus structure to get another $200K for going something like 9-3 in regular season and going to and winning a mediocre bowl game. And someone being paid $5mil needs another $2,000/month allowance for cars! Coach Dabo is great, but the contract smacks of greed and nickle and dime. If someone offers it he should take it, we are the fools for bankrupting the university and running the atheletic dept at a loss to "keep up w/ the power 5". Another run to NC game this year and we will lose money again, and will have to re-negotiate Dabo's and everyone else's contacts upward.
Love my Tigers, not happy to see some of what has been going on. We were unique, no more.

If so quit complaining. If all you want to do is tailgate get drunk and look at coeds in sundresses (all wonderful things to do) there are other places to go where best isn't the standard; one of em is just 90 miles down I-26. I didn't have to pay as a student, but conditions have changed and this is what we need to be competitive. End of discussion welcome to the real world. Hey if some gave me the option of free Tommy West football, or $225 Dabo Swinney football when I was at Clemson I would have paid in a heartbeat.

Winning isn't about who has the most money! Evidence being that Clemson isn't even in the top 20 of finances.
To get to a championship you have to win games. Part of winning at home is having an electric atmosphere. Tarnishing the student section for a measly amount of money is flat out idiotic.
Lastly, this decision could negatively impact our pipeline of future donors. While a lot of people think the ticket fee is no big deal, there are repercussions that should be considered. Smart money should focus on turning students into life-long Clemson fans.

buildings ALL OVER campus at an alarming rate but giving students free tickets is just sucking Clemson dry. Note: I am fine with Dabo's contract.
Other solutions: *Sell beer (there's already booze all over campus. The pros do it and it seems to work for them....) *Cut back on Littlejohns renovations *Cut back on the new athletic facilities building *Sell $5-$15 tickets to watch the game in the AC at littlejohn
There are several options available. Screwing over students is a mistake. You know all those people that aren't big into sports? Yea a lot of that type student will never witness the greatness of Clemson football now and never be PAYING FANS IN THE FUTURE.
"How do you hold students who are supposed to be on the hill off the hill from the time the gates open until the team runs down?" WHAT?!?!?! Who is this moron? FIRE HIM. Has he NEVER WATCHED A FFFFFFING GAME???? This process happens EVERY GAME!!!!!!

Obviously this is a difficult issue with no simple answers , like some of those proposed here (sell beer, cut back on renovations to LittleJohn, etc). And I do agree, the students are what Clemson is all about. I would hate to see them relegated to some section of the stadium where their game presence was mitigated from a roar to a whimper. Perhaps charging $225 for game tickets is too much to ask. But would someone please tell me how many month's smart phone payments that amounts to - 3, 4? I can tell you this, if I needed money for football tickets when I was a "poor" student, living on my ROTC allotment, I would have found it. There must be a compromise solution here somewhere.

I like the idea of charging all the freebie tickets given out $225/seat. President's suite, coaches, the Athletic department should have to pay for recruits seats, Or pass that onto recruits, because you know that is an untapped source of revenue. Why should these administrators and coaches get free tickets and not the students? I mean the presidents box has all you can eat food and all you can drink beer and wine...a few more places for revenue. Charge them for their hot dog and bud light.

In the athletic department. Start by getting rid of all other sports but football. It's not like they even come close to paying for themselves (yeah, looking at you Basketball and Women's Sports) Title IX says your welcome. Ok, before the flaming away begins, I kid. Well, maybe.. kinda. Could always focus more on fishin' and Equestrian Events instead. I'm sure we have plenty of fishing experts on T-Net and I would gladly Pro Bono on the horse side in exchange for some of those soon to be available lower deck seats.

This is wrong. Dan, stop trying to displace students to make room for more donors. Not bashing donors here. I have been faithful with Iptay through thick and thin. Those days of a half empty stadium during the Hatfield/West tenures are not that far removed. The football team first belongs, if you will, to the University and the student body. As a Clemson graduate, loyalty and tradition matter. Without them we are just another state school.

Im okay with charging for lowers with uppers free as long as

As long as the Hill is free. Maybe the first however many students get hill tickets and the rest get upper deck tickets.
I you want to pay and sit in the lower then so be it.
This way the dedicated make it to the hill, the slouchers do not and those who pay get great seats.
This seems to work in everyones best interest.
Also, yes you should be able to resell the student lower ticket if you pay for it.
