If you haven't already.
That station might be the most garbage filled sports talk radio station in the whole country.
More commercials than talk.
The radio host suck. All of them.
The worst of all is that idiot walt.
I know the lines are jammed guys but were coming to you.... Really?? Really?? All 7 people that call everyday and the lines are jammed??

the broadcast is worse!! Static, dead air, etc. It is not a good station striclty on the basis of quality of broadcast. I like Mickey minus the yankees crap and Qualk cracks me up, those are the only redeeming qualities!

I'm glad we have a local sports station

No way I'm boycotting. I hate having to hear national announcers interviewing the "in game announcer of the Memphis Grizzlies" for example. I mean, come on. At least this way we get to listen to and talk about the local teams that matter. Don't bash it too hard. And Mickey, Qualk, and Walt all bring up interesting and talkable points, whether you agree with them 100% or not.

My thoughts and some history...

Boycott WCCP and do what with your sports listening time? You are telling me that a radio station 100% committed to Clemson sports and hosts talking local sports should be boycotted so that you can listen to national hosts that only care about pro sports? Are you saying that Will Merritt’s alternative is better? No way. I liked Will as a player, but as a sportscaster, not so much. He has zero insider info that he is willing to share. Ron Scarborough’s show in the evenings is no better.
Does WCCP have technical difficulties too often? You bet! In fact it makes me question their commitment to staying on the air long term due to the many, many technical difficulties. I’m an Engineer, so that grates on me more than anything. I don’t know who the technical lead is for the station, but surely they can find someone better. My guess is that it is a lack of money thing. I doubt that boycotting WCCP is the answer. WCCP is a work in progress that sounds like it works from a shoe string budget.
I was listening to sports radio way before WCCP converted to a sports talk station. Back in those days, Phil Kornbloot at 5pm was all there was. I don’t know if you have listened to his show, but my guess is that commercials and PSA’s were/are nearly 60 – 70% of his show – seriously. Other than that, there were no local shows on FM and I don’t recall much on AM. When I first listened to WCCP, it had Cobb Oxford, Tommy Powell and Butch Estes. Ralph Patterson was there too along with Mickey in the afternoons. I even remember Jimmy Watt being on the station for a time. It gave the upstate Clemson, and to a small extent Gamecock, fans a place to enjoy talking and hearing local college football news. After the major defection of on air personalities to an AM station (which didn’t make it very long), WCCP added Packer in the afternoons. This was a great move, but eventually I tired of it and of course Packer left the program, so it died as an option.
There is no better alternative now. With this latest station manager, I think they are trying to get more professional. He made a hard decision earlier this year to dump Dan, but it had to be done. Adding Roy Philpot has been a major upgrade. The best hosts are Mickey and Roy. Mickey is just right for mornings and Roy is probably the best, most polished of the bunch, but is stuck in the noon – 3pm slot. I can only take Walt and James in small doses. The UFO guys are decent, but you have to appreciate the “local-ness” of the show. I have listened to my share of national shows over the years and I always find myself coming back to WCCP. It talks about the subject that I want to hear the most – Clemson sports.

if a poll were conducted in the upstate (wccp's range) i would be willing to wager the order of sports would be something like 1. clemson football 2. college football in general 3. pro football 4.college basketball 5.college baseball 6.pro baseball or nascar and on down the list, but for the last month pro basketball has been the announcers topic of choice esp. walt and thurn's. if this isn't mismanagement i don't know what is.

I totally agree that Walt and especially James is all NBA, but it is that time of year. I'm not an NBA fan, but there must be some demand for it. Should it take the place of discussing the CU - USC baseball series this past weekend and the effects of the MLB draft yesterday? Nope and it is why there are a number of us that don't like James and Walt. You are right in your assessment there.

I agree about the station - for what it has to work with it is well done and I will continue to listen to it. The station is a low budget production which probably leads to the high volume of commercials. I also feel that the hosts talk about Clemson sports for the majority of their shows (except Walt) and don't see where the complaint is coming from that they don't focus on Clemson enough. The NBA playoffs are a huge deal now and are pretty drama-filled so any announcer is going to devote a good portion of their show to that. What Clemson sport are you going to want to hear about right now in order to fill 24 hours of air space? Do we all want to reflect on the BB Regionals over and over and over again, or analyze every possible what-if scenario? I am probably in a minority on this, but I also enjoyed listening to Mickey and Qualk discuss the Masters a few months ago and hope they devote the same attention to the US Open and PGA Championships. And come on...anyone that doesn't like Roy Philpot is just plain crazy. Show some love guys, and make sure you go to BGR this week and order that turkey burger with extra mojo sauce or whatever it is called.

What is the alternative to WCCP? I don't ever listen to WCCP myself, but plenty do apparently. Just curious as what would replace WCCP. Any ideas?

The problem is WCCP
Jun 6, 2012, 10:40 AM

I listended to WCCP a LOT when I lived in the upstate over 5 years ago, now only listen occasionally when I get a chance either visiting or online. The problem is not the personalities on the air (although Walt makes me want to vomit when I hear his voice). The problem is that, as Clemson University's flagship station, they talk about Clemson what, 50% of the time, at most? On the other hand, USC's flagship station, 107.5 in Columbia, that I can pick up in Aiken, talks about USC 99.9% of the time and only mentions Clemson if they have to, i.e. they are playing us in some sport that day or week. I would expect a little more service from our "flagship" station, but instead we have to listen to idiot gamecock fans calling in and cackling on like a bunch of chatty cathy dolls.

I know coots who like him. His show is very good.
But the best are Walt's commercials. His voice is sooooooo bad that not even the best SNL skit could purposefully do something worse. It's the epitome of horrid.

I agree about for the most part about Walt.
But to talk about sports from around the rest of the country is only going to make the station better.
I'm a Clemson fan. But all Clemson. All the time. It's not much of a model for good ratings.
