My speculation on ETN at WR.

Urban Meyer is a jerk. But, he's also a good football coach who isn't stupid.
He knows what ETN can do running the football. He saw a tremendous improvement in pass catching last year. But, that is still the "weakness" of ETN.
1. Urban wants to see how well he runs routes and catches the football. 2. Urban wants to "coach him up" and give him information on what he needs to improve on between now and August. 3. Urban wants his coaches to have time, between now and August, to see how ETN can best be utilized in the Jag offense.
Bottom line: ETN may occasionally line up wide in the offense, but he will almost always be lined up in the backfield. He'll catch passes coming out of the backfield, but he'll gain a whole lot more yards rushing than receiving.
Urban an't seriously considering moving ETN to WR.

Very well put Bret.
I think Meyer said after the draft that they felt the offense needed a home run threat and ETN was just that.
I think this rookie camp experiment is just to see how many ways they can get their new "home run threat" involved.

He’s making him stronger in his biggest weakness because he knows how well he can run the ball. Then he becomes lethal coming out of the backfield.

This is why ETN might need reps at WR...

in order to get on the field regularly.
I didn't see a huge improvement in Travis' pass-blocking last year, which means reps at WR may be necessary for him to be a full-time player.

Funny you say that because I was thinking the same about his blocking. Those dudes are little bigger and faster on avg in the NFL and his blocking was always questionable. Dixon is better blocker and even Rencher would give more effort at blocking even being smaller, seen him get knocked flat several times. I don't know who ETN'S counterpart is but I would assume he is much bigger and better blocker, but probably not the homerun threat, therefore let's build a broader playbook for ETN.

I've seen a lot of the talking heads compare ETN to Alvin Kamara. The Saints line Kamara up at receiver quite a bit. For his career he's averaged 11.2 carries per game, and 5.4 receptions per game. He's had over 80 receptions in each of his 4 years in the league thus far. I'm not saying ETN will see that level of action in the passing game, but Meyer wouldn't be the first to try this. It may even extend his career since you take less punishment on receiving routes.

Meant to be clear, that a good portion of the receptions for Kamara have come with him lined up at receiver, and not just from running back screens or such.

Linebackers can't cover ETN or Kamara out of receiver slot or backfield, so it definitely creates a mismatch, just like McCaffrey. McCaffrey and Kamara have been great assets and even as decoys create huge attention. Plus you better have one on your Fantasy team. ETN might be a great upside Fantasy player too!

The more ways that they can find to use ETN's talent, the more chances they will have to get him across the goal line into the End Zone!!!

A little reverse of T. Hill at KC comes to mind. He is a receiver that runs a lot. ETN will be a runner that catches the ball a lot.

I have no doubt ETN will catch a bunch of passes. But, Kamara and Harvin were not near the runners ETN is. Urban ain't gonna throw ETN's running skills away. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

We live in Jax and the national media has made more of this than it really is at this point ... they only had 14 guys in rookie camp that could take snaps - and 1 QB (Trevor) who is being protected due to shoulder surgery ... thus, no handoff's at all as they didn't want Trevor to get bumped or trip on handoff, etc. ETN, while will probably be used as a hybrid, was put at WR to get him some reps live vs. having a coach simulate. They know ETN can play RB already.

Agree. The media is looking for a story where no story exists. Sensationalism at it's best.
Urban's 3 big mistakes: 1. Hiring that strength coach. 2. Signing Tebow. 3. Moving ETN to WR.
They are looking for clicks. Looking for debates on Get Up and other sports talk shows.
