This was my first 6-pack scoop. I was once a nerd and as a kid read Consumer Reports magazines and a study had the High Life at the top of the beer list on ABV at 6.0% (legal max at the time apparently) and I wanted the biggest bang for my buck with my allowance.

Oops now I see where you wrote that at the bottom!!!! Me and my friend were just talking about drinking those not long ago. I think we were 16 or 17. I remember drinking lots of them at the Peter Adonis strip shows in the early 80’s. We could get away with so much more back then. We weren’t old enough to drink beer OR go see strippers but we got in anyway.

First beer was probably a Natty Boh. Freshman year of HS. I had Saturday JUG and had to report to school for campus clean up at 8 AM. The Brother in charge asked if I was hungry and brought me some cold beans (no microwaves back then). Offered me some milk, but came back with something else. It was a glass of beer. So here I am 14, eating cold beans and drinking (bad) beer while in JUG.

When I was 16, my father, who was from Austria, gave me 2 cases of imported Lowenbraeu for Christmas and told me it had to last all year.

We were too young to legally drink, but there was a house off Poinsett Hwy/Hwy 25going into Greenville. Just past the Rainbow Drive In. They had a green light bulb in the porch light. $2 a 6 pack (‘70s, when it was $1.25 legally).

We’d then drive back to TR and the Green Valley Country Club - where my buddy’s dad worked - park and get drunk. And ‘walk’ the water hazards, feeling for, finding golf balls which we would sell back to the golf course driving range for 25 cents/dozen. So we could buy more beer…..

My dad was Vietnam vet and biker. Use to be a few bars between Lyman and Sparkle City where I could go into and typically lady bartenders knew him and recognized me. My Dad rarely drank anything alcoholic, but if he had a beer, I always saw him salt the top. So, I copied, which to me cut that first, bitter taste. Still salt the tops to this day.

While in the Army in Germany, I sampled the German brews, most of which were local types, but were about twice the alcoholic content. Hence, when in an Army club, my preference was for what we jokingly called Buttwipers...The King of Beer. Never have liked the Lite versions either.

hartins®I recall all we got in the clubs was 3.2% (‘near beer’). The German beer definitely was a lot more potent. I also remember that in Denmark in the 80’s, there were only two brands - one we called ‘Elephant beer’ - but don’t recall the actual names/brand…. But at almost $8 a bottle,I darn sure didn’t drink many! They had a heckuva kick, though!

I’d also seen people put salt on their beer. Didn’t know the actual reasoning. Interesting.

A sip of my Dads as a 12 year old boy. Budweiser was the only beer he would drink. He kept 4-5 cases stacked in his garage. I told on him in church as a 5 year old. Daddy buried and I said very loudly “need another beer, Daddy?” He could have crawled away and died. He quit soon after and hasn’t drank much at all over the last 40 plus years.
