DOGE chickens come home to roost

Nephew of; Doctorate in Chemistry from Dook. Hired on at FDA after graduating last May. Kicked axe, as nephew of does, and bumped up the ladder in December, but being bumped up comes with a probationary period, and thanks to Elon's sweepingly non-elected hand, nephew of and other well qualified teammates are now laid off, with the foreseeable a yawning vacuum.
Way to go, Elon! Let's get Billy Bob with an associate's degree in IT in there, monitoring food processing plants and checking for ebola and salmonella and chit.
America!
#### yeah!

It’s frustrating to see qualified people getting axed while decisions are made by those with zero experience in the field.

Keowee I want you to cycle into this thread at some point today and tell pawacoot he’s a liar, and how you know that promotions don’t come with probationary periods.

Being promoted does not start the probationary period over again. Unless you are at some chief level. He stated that his nephew started (at the earliest) would have been last may, which is less than a year.
He/ she would still be in their original probationary period cause it's LESS THAN A FKN YEAR of total employment, and nothing to do with promotions.
Does it suck for them? Yes. Am I correct? Yes
Also, being promoted in less than a year is sus, what was his/ her original grade and what grade were they promoted to 6 months later?

You seem emotional, are you on your period? Calm down.
That’s not what pawacoot said, I want you to tell him he’s a liar. You’ve now been presented with multiple first hand accounts of federal employee promotions leading to probationary periods, along with all the examples in the media this week that you don’t seem interested enough to look into. Maybe you should reconsider whether or not this is a hill you’re willing to die on?
So please, tell pawacoot he and his nephew are liars and that you know better.

So, he assumes that since his nephew with 6 months on the job was laid off that the FDA will now be led by some a.s. IT guys, and not the ones that have already been there 30 years? Yes, he's lying.

Good, thanks for that. We’ll all just all be super clear that the personal examples people have shared are all lying, and that you know exactly what’s happening, and it certainly has nothing to do with you just being blindly loyal and defensive about your political team.

None of these "personal" examples have any details.

What was his nephew's grade before and after his promotion in 5 months? Was he a paid intern that got coverted to accepted service? Was his job that he started in Dec his first actual competive position? All of those things matter.
Either way, he was never employed over a year which is the minimum whether he was "promoted" or not. So to say that the promotion is why he was laid off is disengenuous at best and a straight out lie at worst.

I worry you may be taking your own personal experience with government employment and applying that to everyone else’s, despite first hand accounts to the contrary. Most of what I’ve heard and read about this suggests a breadth of variability between federal agencies and departments regarding probationary periods.

I don't know exactly what his job title was, but he was on a team that oversees food processing plants and distribution facilities that are required to submit reports on contamination elimination systems and procedures. He was promoted to the chemistry department, but he has a DOCTORATE in Chemistry, and yes, that promotion came with a NEW probationary period.
And yes, thanks to Elon, he now has no job.

"I don't know exactly what his job title was". Still have no idea if he was holding an excepted position within the FDA or was a recent grad program (paid intern) in May. The have that he was still in the same organization is even less chance of a "new probationary" period. He was still less than a year period, no matter what positions he held. Still sucks, but his " promotion" had noting to do with it.

Yes, it's the same organization (FDA), but a totally different department. And my nephew wasn't an intern. And I highly doubt he's lying to his entire family.

The majority of the time, you Libs never tell the whole story. Go to the real world where a 25 year worker can be cut and a 6 month worker stays. Went through that process at least a half dozen times and made it until I finally retired.

My daughter got caught as well at NASA

When she was at community college she got a $5000 NASA NC Space Grant Scholarship. We joking called her the rocket scientist. She went to State and got a BS ChemE with Biomfg minor. She got an internship and then a Job with a rocket company Called ULA (Altas, Delta, Vulcan Rockets). In her job she had top secret+ security clearance and had direct contact with DOD, Space Force, and NASA as clients. Got as MS in Space Systems from Johns Hopkins.
A NASA contractor for launch operations contacted her about a job maybe a year and a half ago, but she turned it down because it was not a GS job for NASA although it was a way in. Last year NASA contacted her directly. They interviewed and offered her a job. They wanted her to start in December but she had some ski trips planned and asked if she could start in Feb.
Start date moved to Feb 10. She gave her company a 4 week notice. The day before the her last day which was the day before we left for a ski trip she gets the coldest email you can imagine. Your offer has been rescinded, the job no longer exists, don't call us. The cutoff date was Feb 8. She missed it by 2 days.
HR took like one email and wouldn't take a call. The hiring manager said he got the same email and would try to work on something.
They called back last week and said they could get her in with the contract company. They got the job approved and would tell her when it posted. Three days later reports are all new hires are fired and NASA is cutting 10%...then they backtracked and then the job finally got posted last night and they emailed her immediately.
It looks like it may work out for her. I felt so bad for her. She quit a great job then had the next job pulled out from under her. Ended up unemployed with no unemployment or anything. (She did have 6 months expenses saved up in an emergency fund like her dad told her to do)
NASA is kind of a pinnacle for rocket scientist. Maybe not a life long career but working there is awesome on a resume. Still some uncertainty, but they really want her and they are trying to expand the division that is hiring her. There just aren't a lot of people in the world with her expertise.
I still have no clue who she voted for the last two elections. We talk almost daily and are very close. I don't mix politics and family, thats what this board is for.

It’s very sad that the American people have given up their representation so easy. I don’t think maga voters have realized yet how Trump used them. Sad days ahead. I am all for efficiency and reducing cost. But when you hand over power to a guy running around with a chainsaw vs your elected representative. Something is wrong.

Hope things work out for your daughter. That's what is so frustrating about Trump. I agree with some of what he is trying to do, but couldn't disagree more with the how of what he is attempting to do.
We didn't get this massive bureaucratic morass of a federal government overnight. There is a ton of fat and fraud present which should be attacked with precision and intelligence rather than the way it's being done.

She seems pretty impressive, and you should be proud.
My older half-brother scored 1600 on his SAT, and then the Secret Service came calling. Funny how that works. Anyway. He, too, was given top security clearance, which involved a call to me, his little 12-year-old brother. I will never forget it.
He left the SS after a couple of years and went to USC. I know, a chicken so he can't be that smart after all .

I agree that only getting rid of probationary employees (however it's defined) is less than ideal but if it upsets you you should be mad at the federal employee unions and tbe courts that have combined to make it basically impossible to make mass layoffs wherever they may actually be most needed. No idea why people are ok with hundreds of thousands of unelected bureaucrats basically being untouchable no matter how irrelevant their jobs are or how little they do every day for taxpayers. If your loved ones getting canned you should be mad at those groups of people who have willingly through labor negotiations made them practically the only fireable people in the entire federal government.

The first vaccines had 90-96% efficacy in preventing transmission. It dropped as new variants emerged, obviously, but you don't get to rewrite what actually happened for political points.
