I would absolutely love the NCAA to classify athletes as employees. They already are.

It ain't the athletes. The colleges, conferences, and the NCAA are fighting incredibly hard to stop them from being considered employees.

If they become employees

are they still students? They're being paid to play athletics, not get an education. This has to apply to all sports, so those who generate zero revenue, or lose money must get paid as well. And equality must apply for gender regarding wages. Also, as employees, they can be fired, recruited from other employers, are entitled to benefits unless considered contractors, eligible for disability, could leave mid-season for a better offer.....
You see what a Pandora's box this is?

Them being considered employees may (or may not) be the best for their interests, but make no mistake that the box has long since been opened and we're in the middle of the quagmire as we speak.
All of these issues are already a mess.

This is what kills me now. The fans are being asked to pay more and more money to these collectives for players.
How about the coaches need to start earning less now and that money be reallocated to the players.

makes them entitled? Athletes at various institutions have been trying to unionize for a while, the most recent and notable one at Northwestern I believe. I dont know enough to know whether this is good or bad for athletes, but the chaotic situation that the NIL has brought is more of a function of the adults in the room not doing what they need (or needed) to do to calm the situation. The NCAA and its leadership (which means school Presidents and athletic administrators) put their head in the sand for years on what was happening and where the following the laws would lead them. And now that it's here there is no true leadership in college athletics as each school and conference is trying to force their own power and agendas.
So of course there will be trial and errors going forward as the athletes themselves meander around trying to find the best path.

Make them emoyyees. A classification change, then allows for company(university) directives. If the universities get together and establish salary bands by year (freshman thru senior) it could be a positive game changer. No free medical, reduced scholarship dollars, and fees for room and board. Think about it? An employee is not the same by far. This is overzealous individual not thinking everything through.

An interesting point here is if the NLRB does in fact rule that these players are employees and can collectively bargain, the ruling would only extend to private schools and not public universities. At the end of the day, the collegiate system in its current state is a fundamentally broken model that is a few steps away from being a Walmart dumpster fire. No way to get around that.

Unionizing the players would probably be a welcome regulatory step at this point. It beats the NIL anarchy we are seeing.

Do not know what is the best course of action is but from what I have seen I recent years unions would be worse.
Something needs to be done though what we have now is chaos. Blows my mind how fast things have spiraled out of control as far as big money. It’s always been there but not sure if even touches what is going on now.

University presidents and athletic directors have already done a great job of that by allowing star football and basketball players into school who don’t have the grades, test scores, or extracurriculars to warrant admission, all because they are a great athlete and make the team better, which makes schools and fans happy because they wrap too much of their identities around the success of their teams.

It's always funny to watch fans, who are just observers, complain about player entitlement. Like do you understand irony? The only entitlement I see is with the fans bitching about players having freedom to transfer like any other student or make money like any other student because it means the sport environment isn't conforming to their desires anymore.

Fans may just be observers as per your definition but those "observers " also have purchasing power. When the product on the field doesn't fit what observers want and stop watching the dollars from TV and donors as it currently stands diminish to the point there is no money to be had. Need an example? NASCAR is trying every trick in the book to get more people to watch cause the money is drying up.

Further proof to my point is this. Until yesterday evening at a customer dinner I had no clue that bowl season had started. Yes that is just one person that used to be a hard core football fan but How many more are there just like me already?

to the limit.
The courts will decide this. Unless Congress steps in, I expect all of the major issues will eventually run up to the Supreme Court.
That's how our system works.
IMO, the unionization of college athletes is a matter of WHEN, not IF. It will take 5-10 years.

Entitled Athletes
Yeah, they are entitled to their fair share of the huge money pie that is NCAA football - especially since said product would not exist without them.
You know, The TP and NIL are a bit of an unregulated mess right now, but the idea that college athletes don't deserve to be fairly compensated for their talents and their efforts is one I cannot understand. These are the people who have special (marketable) talents and work their butts off to develop them to the highest levels. The huge TV contracts that float all of the fat cats in the NCAA would not exist if it weren't for these gifted athletes.
Now, one might argue that the way we are currently trying to compensate them is poorly thought out and open to corruption, but the athletes' right to their piece of the pie in unquestionable.

These kids already get awesome facilities, the best medical care money can buy, meals that are individually prepared to the players physical needs for performance, tutoring, development for play at the next level, and a stipend for spending money, not to mention the diploma they have the opportunity of obtaining.
The only people who will benefit from this are the lawyers and player reps this creates. But then again, once contracts are signed, maybe the nil and tp will disappear. I guess amateur sports will end after high school.

If you want a level playing field where some teams don't pay players way more than other teams, you better hope that there is a players union that collectively bargains an agreement with the P5 schools. Otherwise it will continue to be the wild west and some teams will pay lots and other teams will not.
The courts have already decided that the schools can't collude (via the NCAA) to block the players from being paid. So get with reality and support a college football players union that will calm down what is happening right now. Or don't, but then stop whining about the player movement and the NIL deals.
