Which is unusual for his/her posts, but nonetheless, here it is.
He/she mentioned referring to grandpa as granddaddy, and it reminded me how unique it is that certain parts of the country (most notably the south) are notable for referring to grandfathers using unusual nicknames, such as:
granddaddy papaw pawpaw
Et cetera.
So I did some research. Papa appears to be the most common nickname for grandpa in the United States. In 36 out of 50 states, it is the most popular nickname. Here are some of the states where it isn't:
Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana: Pawpaw is the most popular Arkansas, Tennessee, and Kentucky: Papaw
Papaw is also the most popular grandpa nickname in Indiana.
I have actually heard some people call their grandpa "Pepaw."
Of course, the unique southern names for grandparents also extend to grandmothers. The most common grandma nickname is Nana (32 states), followed by Grammy and Granny. However, in the south, we see some different nicknames which are the most common:
Mamaw (Mississippi, Arkansas, Kentucky) Mawmaw (Louisiana, West Virginia)
It is also interesting that Mamaw is the most popular nickname for grandma in both Indiana and Ohio.

I have also noticed that a sizable number of males in the south refer to their father as daddy, even as teenagers and even adults. You don't tend to see that nearly as often in other parts of the country.
Anyway, I thought it was interesting.

Both of my Grandfathers were call Papaw. My Grandmothers were called Mamaw and Nannie. My Parents were called Papaw and Mamaw.
When I became a Grandparent I wanted to go against the family grain and be called Pappy.
Now that the Grands are older I am now Pap.
It's great being a Parent but there is something special about being a Grandparent.

Papa was the common grandfather name in my family and I figured that’s what I would be as well. But when our daughter in law was pregnant with our first grandchild, I learned that both her grandparents were still alive and they were both Papa. Her dad was also going to be Papa. We still had some time so I figured we would come up with something. Well, one game day my daughter who had been the Tiger Cub mascot told me she ran into Tajh outside the Esso Club before a game. We had met several times and he asked her, “How’s Pops doing? Is he still in Asheville?” I told her I liked how that sounded so I’m now Pops to both of my granddaughters, thanks to Tajh.

did some researching before C: poasting is D: very encouraging.
Keep up the good work.
My wife and her contemporaries all went with "Pop" and "Grammy." All are from around here, the Midlands, or Lowcountry.

My 95 year old daddy is in hospice care after a stroke and probably won’t make it through the week. He’ll always be daddy to me. I do sometimes call him pop.

Yeah, my kids asked me what I wanted to be called. My first request was Chilean Sea Bass. I'm trying to settle for MacDaddy. Will probably get Pops. That's fine, I'll morph it to Sugar Pops when she can talk.
