Miracle Plays--Here is my favorite from 2006

Oct 22, 2015, 2:54 PM

I had a friend serving in Afghanistan and so I sent him reports on our games that year. Here was one of my favorite Clemson miracle wins. I took out all the names to protect the innocent. ;)

Well, here's how our trip to Winston Salem played out.

Game 6: Wake Forest

We got on the road by 7:00 A.M. and met ### and ### in Columbia. By the time we got to Winston-Salem it was a cold, grey day in the low 50's. It rained and misted off and on. The first real, cold weather of the fall. IT FELT GOOD! Parking was harder this time. The fairgrounds was filled up so we ended up parking on a side street. It looked like somewhere near the stadium in Columbia. Olympia in miniture. Concrete and broken beer bottles on the sidewalks. Clemson has such a great tailgating scene! We had enough time for 2 beers and then had to make our way to the stadium. As usual Clemson had a great crowd. WF had designated this game a "Black Out" and their fans dressed in black. So basically we had a Halloween Stadium.

The game started off bad and although we didn't play so badly--bad things kept happening to us. In the past Groves Stadium has been a House of Horrors and it felt like once again we had been cursed by some dark forces or even some demons spawned in football hell. They say that Groves Stadium lulls your team to sleep and then WF strikes like a some black, sinister, slithery Cobra to win. We looked like we were asleep and very much out of it. So much so that by the end of the 3rd it looked like Clemson had let the ballgame slip away. The crowd was out of it and it looked like the Tigers were dead in the water. WF lined up to kick a FG that would put them ahead 20-3. The Cobra was ready to strike. 3 scores looked insumountable. ### (my wife)told me she would never go to another WF game in Winston-Salem again if we lost. I am sure some were cursing both ### and me.

Then is if like lightning the whole universe righted itself. 3 times in a row was too much for the fabric of time and space to endure. Gaines Adams made the most incredible defensive play I have seen in years knocking the misplayed field goal up and into his hands as he raced downfield. It brought the Clemson crowd of 10,000 to their feet as he scored a needed TD. It was like rain on a parched desert. I hugged ### in a huge bear hug! All of us Clemson fans were high-fiving! The momentum in that stadium made a 180 degree turn. God, I love college football! From then on Clemson did everything right! 3 more Clemson scores put it out of reach. It was incredible! It was as if the curse had been lifted/broken. Clemson found away to come back and win the ballgame. 27-17! We were still in the ACC race!

After the game ###, ###, ###, and myself went back to our car and had many a cold beverage. We watched all kinds of people clear out. Sad black-clad WF fans and happy orange-clad Clemson fans filed by us! Tigerband rode by in 4 buses--many waving to us from their dark-tinted windows. Suddenly it was just us four on a cold, rainy day in Winston-Salem. All the other cars were gone. The film-noir looking street was clear. But the beer was going down good and the universe had righted itself. It wasn't pretty and we were pretty lucky but I'll take what happened there any day over a lost. Clemson had won!

I was driving back from a BBQ contest that day.

Got out of the car, slammed the front door just a little to hard, found the TV just as the play was happening.

Ahhh, my first Clemson game. My dad took me up to Winston-Salem for that and I was super excited. I remember it being cold, windy and dreary and weren't exactly dressed well for the occasion. Between the weather and the game itself, I was pretty miserable.

While wake was lining up or the kick my dad asked if I wanted to leave and head back to charleston. I told him lets just watch the kick and see from there. Well the third quarter ran out before they snapped the ball and we decided to head back to the car instead of waiting for the kick. As we're heading back, we hear the cloud erupt and tiger rag break out. We kind of looked at each other like something big had happened. We figured they probably just missed the kick or something.

A wake fan and his kids were looking for tickets to get in an we gave them ours and by the time we got to our car and put the game on, Clemson had somehow tied the game. We listened to the broadcast as Clemson completed the improbable comeback.

Long story short, don't leave early lol.
