Mickey Plyler's Blog: The Eternal Optimist

The Eternal Optimist

The Eternal Optimist
I am always a little confused why people get upset by what their coach says at a press conference.  This happened again yesterday when a few Clemson fans on message boards got upset at Da

I get what you're saying about Dabo, but your political and business world comparisons were way off. For instance; when has Obamao not been singing the gloom and doom song, only to go right into blaming anyone but himself? Comparing Dabo to that liar is unfair because at least Dabo mans up and accepts some blame. And if you don't want me venting like this about political stuff, use other examples in your comparison. Same as with the car companies. They were ruined by greedy unions, but when the president of the USA sits in the meetings and tells the preferred stock holders that they will have to take a back seat to his union supporters, do you honestly think any of the motor city brass were going to get in front of a camera and tell you that your "leader" just violated contractual law just to help one of his constituencies?

Now with all of that being said; the only thing I wish Dabo had made it a point to emphasize in his presser was a new found dedication to RUNNING THE FOOTBALL WITH OUR TBs. We MUST do this the rest of the year or we will lose to GT, and USuCk. Morris wants 90 plays a game; well that should be about 50 carries @ least for our 4 man rotation. We will not beat the chickens without a real running game.

A lot of games left...we need optimism.

Oct 23, 2013, 10:04 AM

It hurts to lose, and hurts even more to get embarrassed. Nobody hurts worse than our players and coaches. But they have a lot of work left this season, and if they don't anticipate good results they won't get good results.

There are some tigernet readers/posters that love to bash Dabo. The fact is we are fortunate to have him. We spent decades just in or just out of the top 25. Now we are just in or just out of top 10. Soon we will be a solid top 5. With the playoff coming, a solid top 5 is what you need to be.

Dabo believes in himself and Clemson. I think he's right.

Great article.

True, he was talking to the team probably, not us.

Trying to make them believe they are as good as they want to be.

In college football, game to game, that can be true.

That might be the best blog you've ever written. Go Tigers!***

Very true! I may never remember any of your other....

Oct 24, 2013, 2:46 AM

blogs past a few days, but I will forever remember this one. I will especially remember the comment about how optimism made Dabo the man that he is. I would add that this optimism has its roots in his strong faith. If one truly understands even a little bit about Dabo and his life story, one could never criticize his optimism.

I agree wholeheartedly with you, Mickey! Optimism is how I get through each and everyday. Optimism is why Dabo Swinney is producing a football program every member of the CLEMSON FAMILY can be proud of! Optimism is why I have been a TIGER FAN for over 61 years! Growing up with 3 brothers and a Daddy who taught me the love of not just football but CLEMSON FOOTBALL, I learned very early to be optimistic. We didn't always win but we always enjoyed being at CLEMSON on a beautiful fall afternoon and we always cheered our team!

There's a difference between optimism and just saying

Oct 23, 2013, 12:19 PM

something stupid. Also, what's optimistic about saying you'd go 5-5 against a team? Wouldn't the optimistic approach be 9-1?

Why are you turning this into a life lesson? You got your butt whooped. Leave it alone. Don't make excuses and don't take anything away from your opponent. You got your chance, it didn't work out. Enough.

What a silly article.

5 and 5 vs FSU = optimism tempered somewhat by reality

Oct 23, 2013, 4:59 PM

Nine and one = insanity tempered by spiked kool-ade. That was the perfect answer. And, by the way, any Tiger who puts ANY store in what Tommy Bowdown's opinion is on the matter need only look back to the excuses the little pansy-a$$ made for all his shoulda-wins.

I do agree that without Coach Swinney having the attitude and personality he has, the job would have been too big for him. With his recruiting, coordinator hires and obvious new team personality he has been a good fit. FSU is not 51-14 better than Clemson, if you don't believe that then I don't know what to tell you. FSU is a very good team with multiple years of top 10 recruits and they had a bye week while we played a physical game against BC. What year has every good team played to their abilities every single game? My son and I watched the whole game, take your medicine and respond!

There's probably a difference in what a coach will say at a close loss vs. a butt kicking. I've been thinking this week about how Clemson fans react to a butt kicking. (By the way, I am not enamored of butt kickings, even though I've seen Clemson be the butt-end of a number of them.)

Early last season the Washington Nationals Manager, Davey Johnson, reacted to a 19-0 drubbing where the Nationals were victims of a butt-kicking. What I remember most about his reaction was his final statement, "I'm thankful that even though this was an embarrassing loss, it only counts as one loss."

What I would like to see from the Tigers from the coaches to the players for the rest of this season is a recognition that this was one loss. An embarrassing loss perhaps, but still just one loss.

Now let's go out there and beat Maryland one last time! Just my view....

MP nailed. Remember in U-571 when the skipper...

Oct 23, 2013, 8:22 PM

...tells Matthew McConoaughy's character, "Don't you dare say what you said to those boys back there, 'I don't know'! Those three words will kill a crew. You're the captain now, and the captain ALWAYS knows what to do whether he does or not!" Love it. People need to back off Coach Swinney. GO TIGERS!
