Cars yall have owned

Car ownership means a lot in America, less in other countries.
These days I would like to claim all I care about is reliable transportation, but ~~~
I have never had the $$ for cars I really wanted, but still chose cars less than just "reliable transportation".
I got that from Pop. We had a '54 Bel Air when a lower model would have worked. He traded for a top of the line '59 Impala when he could have saved a lot on the same basic car with less trim.
My first purchase ($48 a month for 3 years) was a '63 VW. The only options were push out rear windows, so of course I opted for those.
That 40Hp car took me from Chester to Clemson and back many times.

Tip: try out CARSyeah.com for many podcasts on muscle & all cars as well as locations of car museums and current/upcoming car shows.
NOW, have had so many cars (many convertibles) & rv's so won't mention them (maybe 28)..
but 1st new one purchased (paid $3300) was for new black 1961 MGA 1600 convertible roadster with hard top, knock-off spoke wheels & whitewalls which was fun and did some sports car club touring & racing events in it..
as well as had a JAG 3.8 4-door sedan in British racing green but got rid of in 6-9 months since leaked more oil than Arabs refined but had neat dash gear automatic stick lever, great muffler sound and leather seats & wood trim were so rich..
but most fun car (since a bit over-powered with 90-120 hp engine) was a 1992 Miata convertible (had in 2004-7) with 5-speed stick tranny and which I dolled up with luggage rack, racing shocks, wind screen, hidden tow hitch which pulled my 1100 lb Whaler/trailer at 70 mph with ease.
Was always a lover of foreign cars thus liked European racing vs stock car but liked Indy 500 racing since the Brits came over and took command for a few years.

I bought a 1961 MGA MK 11 from the police chief of Sigmaringen, Germany. It was stored in his garage. I had it taken apart and restored. It was a great car, served me well. I wish I still had it. I did have it shipped back to the states.
My Bride once bought a Miata and loved it. I think she may buy another.

never had a car until my third yr. at CU.my parents decided to give me a grad present early.it was a '66 triumph tr4a-brg.still one of my favs.best transmission with syncro-clean,crisp shifting,always knew where it was going.not the fastest,but still a great machine to drive.lucky to have geoff and the other guy close by to school to fix any problems.needed a coil once (lucas electrics i believe),but for the most part problems were minimal.on the upside even though interior space was lacking,it was still very versatile when it came to dating.lots of good memories.

I'm older than all of you - class of '52.
In 1955 - I purchased the car of my dreams - a 1955 Oldsmobile Super 88 Holiday Couple hardtop. I wore it out. Still the sharpest looking car I have ever owned. I have a small model of it in my office.
My next fun car was a 1991 silver Miata. Oh, how my wife and I used to enjoy driving it to Clemson for football games. I'd have one today if I could only get in and out of it!!
Been there - done that.

My first car was a 1949 Ford. Paid $100 for it in 1959 and drove it until I bought a VW bug brand spanking new in 1963. Payments were $48 a month. Drove it for 10 years. Top speed was about 55 mph going downhill with a helping wind. Never thought about AC. Just rolled the windows down.

I have owned more than one as it is a good car. The '63 would go 72 MPH as advertised. It was not fast, but not under powered.

Love those Lucas positive ground electrical systems. Drove it all through high school. Sold it in the last several years since it was just sitting in the yard collecting mildew and tree sap.

My Bride bought one. On some days a friend and I would drive it to foot races.
I did not fit behind the wheel well, but Dan was shorter and would drive. He would win the race, and I would challenge the geezers.
The plus was I could drink much beer after a hard race.

Air Force Academy. ‘93 cavalier with 200k miles on it. Drove it til it literally stopped. Bought a 2002 Toyota Tacoma new, drove it til 2018. Bought a 2018 GMC Sierra new and totaled it in 2021. Got by borrowing father in laws truck for awhile then in December 2021 bought a 2022 Toyota Tundra hoping to have it for a long time. I know many of you are smarter and have better luck finding bargains but whenever I looked I always seemed to find the used cars they wanted for just a couple thousand less than the new ones and I figured I’d rather know who the first owner was. Not saying financially smart at all. I’ll be honest didn’t love the gmc. Have loved both Toyotas thus far. The cavalier was definitely an almost get me where I need to get type of car

BelAir, is so ridiculously priced now, I could never consider owning another one. Unlike back then, I am too old to resurrect basket cases, and even THOSE 55's cost way over 10 grand these days.
Ditto with the only other car I had that I really got a kick out of. 1966 2 door Pontiac LeMans which I GTO cloned. 66 GTO's are HIGHLY prized these days, especially 4 speed factory air ones, which is what I had done to my LeMans.
It would be inconceivable to modern car wrenchers that there was a time when you could go into just about any junkyard and find junked 66 GTOs sitting there waiting to have parts picked. It did take me three different yards to find all the bits to make mine a factory air car. Dash, firewall, and underhood stuff was a LOT of bits. I think I bought it all for under $200 back then. (Except for the compressor, dryer, etc, which I had the good sense to buy "new".)
The bits to do that same conversion would be impossible to find today, and even if you could, they would cost THOUSANDS of dollars.

I bought a '95 and drove it until '13 when I got my Jeep. The odometer gave out around 80K, have no idea how many miles I put on that great truck. It was still running great when I let it go, sure wish I had kept it as often I need a truck. The Jeep and a trailer are OK but not as convenient.

Rambler station wagon. Would have gone to Woodstock if I had the money and thought that Ramblin' Rambler would have made it. 70 mph at top speed. However, I am glad I didn't make it to Woodstock because I probably would not be married to my present wife.

high school friend had one, straight stick shifter off steering column but maybe it also could be converted to automatic..
and had that ugly sloped back with neat high front seat felt backs which would fold down to meet back seats and thus would make a comfortable bed for two.

Cincinatti on a road trip. Went all the way there and back with nothing but the hand brake for brakes! I have two witnesses. Lucky as all get out I lived long enought to meet Mrs. Spud and get some sense.

A friend of mine had a 72 super beetle. He was being recruited by the tigers and had home game tickets to every home game he wanted to go to that year ('98-99). I was driving and somewhere around Newberry on the way back from one of the games I blew a spark plug right out of the darn thing. Im assuming it was stripped or something but that was a fun trip back after his dad chewed our butts for having to come get us from Goose Creek.

In high school few had a car --"in the day". Some had use of the family car. #### had no Pop and his Mom had a Rambler. He had use of that. The front seats would go back. We all saw that as erotic. #### was later a leader at Clemson in Pershing Rifles and served in VN as a Marine Officer (RIP).

Your Rambler story brought back memories. I had a Rambler station wagon at Clemson, as a sophomore.
Parked it in the ‘PIT’ (Lot 10) parking lot.
The Campus Cops called me at about 11 PM to come to their office. A guy rushing a frat got drunk, then driving home in his beautiful Red Chevelle SS 396, went flying down Williamson road by Death Valley, then down the hill behind Earle Hall) and tried turning right into the PIT going way too fast (close to 100 MPH). He lost control and hit my Rambler so hard it went across the median breaking a small tree, and hit a Cherry Red Camero Rally Sport and a green Ford Maverick on the other side of the median!
A four (4) car pile-up in the PIT. Totaled my Rambler and the other cars were in terrible condition.
Trashed out a couple of classic Hot Rods, and they did not even put him in jail for DUI, since his insurance covered everything.
I got an insurance check and $200 for the Rambler scrap.
The two guys in the Chevelle were so drunk, they didn’t get hurt! The drinking age was 18 back then….Dangerous!

One night in Europe, in a Triumph TR6, on a date, hit a tree. There was little apparent damage, but it was totaled due to bent frame.
Back in the states bought a GT6. I remain sure this was the best possible "all time car" for me. The problem was that it was in their garage more than mine. Excellent car that due to upkeep -- could not afford at the time. I so wish I had it now.

out of our junkyard and drove it for a little while. He gave up on it because it dropped a valve in the head twice. He just could not get it through his head that you HAD to constantly adjust the valves on those things, at least once every 10,000 miles, because the valves would "grow" longer over time. He said to Heyall with that, and went back to driving his gas guzzling Ford Elite II.

My 1st new car was a 1961 VW Bug. My Dad said he never had a new car and didn't want me to suffer.....a new car was wonderful for a freshman in high school. 36hp, but would do 70mph in 3rd gear wound really tight. Didn't have a gas gauge, but a little reserve lever on the floor. Flip it and you had about 50 miles before walking.

You are very old!
In my day in SC there were no VW dealers.
You had to order one from Germany.
I saw one and my Pop was OK. My Mom was not, but we convinced her it was a toy car.
I ordered one from Gibbs Machinery in Columbia. It was forever arriving.
It totally changed my life. I discovered that high school girls would go out with "even me" as opposed to sitting home on a Friday/Saturday night. My dance card was always on over flow.

My sophmore year in high school (1983), my dad LENT me the money to buy a car to get back and forth to football practiced. The deal was to pay him back with my school bus check when I started driving my senior year. My uncle owned a used car dealership at his gas station in Orangeburg. The first week of summer, dad came in and woke me up that morning and said get in the truck. On the way he informed me that we were going to get me a car. Boy was I excited !! We pulled up and Uncle Zane was standing around a white 69 Chevy Camero with chrome wheels drying it off from where he washed it. I knew I would be the talk of school when we started back. Dad asked Uncle Zane did he have it ready, and Uncle Zane said let’s get the papers filled out and I’ll have one of the fellas to pull it around. Meantime, while they were getting the sale papers done I saw another father and son from school looking at it. I said to myself, quit looking it’s already sold!! About this time one of the mechanics came in and told dad and Uncle Zane that it was ready. We got ready to leave, so I started walking to the Camero. Dad said no, this one is yours. It was a baby blue 1977 Chevy Vega Kammback. Just my luck. There were good times in it though !!!!??

Learned to drive on a 54 Pontiac. First car was a 53 Studebaker coupe that I put a full race corvette engine to replace the week straight six. What a ride. My Dad sold it after I graduated from Clemson. Wish I had that one back. Then came a Volvo coupe (the one that looked like a 46 Ford) . Great car. A Pontiac Fire a chief and then a 62 Pontiac Grand Prix. Wrecked it in Columbia and bough 65 GTO. Tradedit for a 68 GTO. In71 I bought one of the first 240z that came out. Fantastic car that I still have. Actually have two now. Best sports car ever made imo. I drive a 240sx Sylvia now. Amazing machine that has 278,000 miles on it and runs great. Also have a Lexus 300is wagon. Only 50,000 were made over five years. Real car.
Notice NO front wheel drive toys in my garage!!! Just manly machines!

First car I bought was in the Army from a guy PCSing to Germany - 72 Chevy Vega 3 speed for $500. Kept for a year before getting discharge orders to go home and traded it to a guy for an Ibanez Roadstar Series II guitar. I was driving it on I-5 near Tacoma one day when the steering box went out. The car went from the far left lane all the way to the right lane and right up an exit ramp without any guidance from me!!

I was the first of my friends to have a car, so pretty much every night we'd get someone of age to buy beer and then drive around spotting deer. We beat the everlivin crap out of it and it never gave me any trouble at all except for some of the previous owner's fiberglass repairs breaking loose. We did a loy more partaking than beer in that car, things that I won't mention here  , but we called it the "Nova_caine" for obvious reasons. I could write a book on that vehicles and our escapades lol.

My dad’s 1st car that wasn’t used was a ‘59 Chevy that I learned to drive in. When at Walter Reed, looked out into the street & saw a blue ‘71 Corvette for the first time & said “What is that!?” When I finally got well enough to be discharged and got back to SC, my dad drove me to Charlotte to City Chevrolet. When we drove up to the showroom there was a blue Vette sitting inside & I said “If it is an automatic, I am in trouble “.(couldn’t drive a stick due to left leg injury). It was automatic & I drove it away- last year Vette before they added catalytic converters and would fly- needed new tires before I put 10,000 miles on it- no air conditioning & I couldn’t stand it a second summer so I traded for a ‘73

An old friend/mentor who often led me into trouble was Roy. He was old, strong, and sat on the porch after work after 70 (always had a job) with Miss Mary drinking Wild Turkey and RC Cola.
He pushed me and expanded my life. A guy at 40 is a kid to one at 70.
Every year he bought the top of the line car from 'City Chevrolet'.

I had a ‘90 second gen. with a sunroof. That thing was a blast to drive. Reasonably fast for a motor with less than 200 hp. Like sitting in a cockpit.

An '84 Chevy Citation II hatchback. $2k for the ultimate used mule wagon just four years removed from the line. Enough hp to maintain flow and the guts to take on the ruggeds. Was a champ on an extended cross country and always got its passengers home safely at the end of the day.

1st new car was a 1969 limited edition Camaro Z-28. 302 small block w/dual holley 850 center pumpers, 411 ring gear. hooker headers etc. etc. MSRP was $4,300, and I got it for $3,725. Wicked fast as well as pretty. Robin's egg blue w/white stripes.

My VERY first car was a 1953 Ford Town Station Wagon.

My dad bought it for $25, tossed me the keys, and said "Take this around the field roads and learn to drive." I was almost 12 years old, and that "3 on the tree" is what I learned to drive on.
My 1st car licensed for the ROAD was a 1955 2-door post BelAir, with the smallest small block, a 265 V-8. (It also was purchased for $25, with a rod knocking inline six that was quickly scrapped to make room for the V-8.) That was also the first car I painted, Grabber Green, a Ford Maverick color. My sister called it "The Green Bomb".
Next up was a 1966 Mercury Caliente, a relatively nice car, except for the fact that I wore out 4 automatic transmissions in the two years I drove it. Those things just weren't meant to run wide open everywhere, I guess.
Then, the 289 got pulled out of the Caliente, and got replanted into a 1964 1/2 Mustang Fastback, after building it for speed. And, it WOULD speed. But, as anyone who ever really owned one would tell you if they are truthful, an early Mustang is not a very substantial car.
So, after my freshman year at Clemson, I went full circle, and re-engined a tank of a car, a 1964 Pontiac Catalina Station Wagon. I put a rebuilt 389 in it that had gotten pulled out of a 1965 GTO by a friend, in favor of a later model 400. That station wagon got me through Clemson, and out on my own.
It would be replaced in time by another Pontiac, a 1966 LeMans two door with a 326 V-8. Naturally, I made it into a GTO clone, at least as far as the hood and interior were concerned. It had come with a factory floor shifted 3-speed, which I quickly ditched for an aluminum case 4-speed, and bolted a Quadrajet manifold and carburetor on top of the bored out 326. Man, that was a fun car to drive after that. Only problem seemed to be, I couldn't stop people from running into the back of it. After being rear ended twice in a 3 month span, I parked it for good.
The last really interesting car I owned was then a 1960 "squarebird" Thunderbird, with a 352 V-8.
Then came a 1977 Camaro, with a s l o w 305 V-8. And alas, from that point on, I pretty much joined the sheep. A brand new 1981 Ford Fairmont, 1986 ChooChoo Custom El Camino, 1988 Mazda 929 (I put 167,000 miles on that car before it got totalled by an idiot who wanted my driving lane, even though I was already occupying it. I really liked that car.) 1999 Buick LeSabre, 2003 Grand Caravan minivan, yada yada.
Oh, almost forgot, there was one other great car. A heavily optioned 1965 Buick Riviera, which I redid well enough to not be embarrassed at car shows. Remember the clamshell hidden headlights? It was a better looking version of the car Patrick Swayze drove in the movie "Roadhouse".I only recently sold that one, after parking it for 10 years.)
Present day vehicle is a 2007 Chevy Avalanche LTZ, and for the wife, a very nice 2020 GMC Acadia Denali that cost almost twice as much as our first house. I still have a 1979 GMC Cabalero (El Camino), and a 2007 GMC Canyon crew cab that I bought for cheap to be my "trash hauler" truck.
That is a whole lot of four wheeled history, right there. And, once we got into the sheep era, I left out 3 or 4 that were COMPLETELY boring.

Just before going into the Army, bought a mint '54 Vette.
All were 6 cylinder, all were automatic. They all had 3 one barrel carburetors, that were difficult to calibrate.
It was slow off the line but could do over a hundred on a long road.
It was a girl magnet, so who cares as to stats?

You and I have the same philosophy. A car is a reliable means to get from point A to point B.
The first car I bought was a 411 Volkswagon. A lemon.
Then I had an AMC Matador. Served my needs.
I was married by then (1975) and we became a two car family. First car I bought after marriage was a Corolla.
The next car I bought, first new car I had ever bought was another Corolla. (1981)
In order, here is every other car we've owned. (Bought them all new, and paid cash for every one of them.)

Learned to drive in '58 and '59 ages 12-13 with a '38 chevy 2 door sedan. It had a '48 six and 3 speed factory floor mounted shift. Drove to jr high during the '60 - '61 school year in a '49 Hudson Commodore taking turns driving with a nearby classmate who had a '51 Studebaker. Family cars were updated a bit in junior HS year with a '56 Chevy 210 and '59 Ford Galaxy. First car owned was a '63 chevy impala with 283ci engine and auto trans used for commuting to classes at CU from G'ville. Then had the following: 69 Plymouth Fury; 79 Buick Regal; 91 Dodge Spirit 6cyl; 97 Dodge Stratus; 01 Chrysler Sebring; 08 Mustang; Now have a 17 Camero RS and 93 chevy S10 pickup 5sp manual v6 bought in 2000. Have never had a new car. Since driving an 88 chevy wagon I purchased for a few years the wife has bought three new and has leased the last three.
After the Fury, had a 74 Pinto Wagon 4 speed manual for a few years. Picked it up from a repair shop on Congaree Rd and when I started across the Roper Mtn Rd bridge over 385 during rush hour it caught fire. Not a fun traffic event. Couple years prior was stopped at a Church St light on the way to work at a bank downtown and was rear ended by a small Datsun sedan driven by a guy who worked at another bank. Caved in his front end and radiator but just put a couple small scratches on the Pinto's bumper. Don't think a Pinto sedan would have fared as well and me likely burned to a piece of charcoal.

I didn’t have these rims on it or the red stripe, I had big wide Crager rims on back & regular size on front with white letter wheels.
I had the engine built and drove it to school without a hood & with straight headers for a few weeks, peeing out every time I stopped lol!
The car & all the work, insurance & etc was paid for by me, myself & I. Bought it when I turned 15, had my SC driver’s license two weeks later. Drove this car to work and back at 15, wet behind the ears. I thought I was made as a gift for the womens at that age lol!

from a neighbor, when I was a junior at Clemson in 1967.
First new one was a 1969 Delta 88 Olds, bought in January 1969, shortly before I graduated, which was stupid considering I knew I had to enter military service immediately after graduation in May and would be headed overseas after schools at Ft. Benning. That car cost $4400!
For the most part I have bought new cars every three to four years, and since the 80's, they have been convertibles. The one now is a Camaro SS convertible with a 455 V-8, which I'll probably trade next spring after four years of ownership. Oddly enough, the good thing about the ragtops is the fact that few family members or friends care to ride, especially considering my lifelong penchant for driving at two speeds: fast and stop! lol.

maroon color on black interior. I bought it for 1200 bucks and sold it a month later when the insurance salesmen threw me out of their offices. I was 16.
My next mistake was a yellow, 1971 Vega. It lasted my 19 yr/o self less than a year. Then I married a girl with a 1973 split front bumper Camaro, also maroon, 350ci w/350 3spd automatic. My fav of all time, except my present 1985 MB, 300SD/om617.xx 5 cyl diesel project car was my 1967 Chevy II SS. It had too many features to list.
I suspect the Mercedes project car will be my last. Anyone know where to buy Glasurit paint?

Since I didn't own it. Was in 10th grade and a casual acquaintance whose Mother was a Professor at Winthrop bought him the 1st GTO to hit Rock Hill. Butt ugly black & white, butt also fast. The fact that he let me drive drive it most times we were together had nothing to do with us becoming friends. Fun car, 3-2's and a 3sp floor shift. He was a weird character and I could only last about a year. Put some hard miles on that goat.

My first car was a 1965 mustang that I purchased in the spring of ‘78. My first fun “show off” car was a black RX-7 several years later.
Additionally, I’ve gone through 3 trucks, 2 Chevy cavaliers, about 50 BMW’s through a company fleet program, and today own a Nissan Rogue.

its own way. The shifter was a slush box. "2-60" A/C. (Two windows down at 60 mph, for you youngsters).
But, man, they were just FUN to drive. I think it was because the engine being in the rear made the steering so light and responsive. Turn the wheel, and the thing would just DART where you told it to go. And, slushy or not, the four speed floor shifter would let you pretend you had something while letting all 36 to 40 horses run.

I have own close to 100 Mustangs. I have 5 now. I have owned about 15 trucks, I have 3 now. I have a '57 Bird, Model A, and many others . at the time. So no I can't list them all

My present car is a '13 Jeep Sahara.
I "needed" another truck but "want" won out. In life many guys want to own a Harley and Jeep, at least for a day. My Jeep with my trailer can haul more than a truck.
I scoured the internet for the one I wanted and found it in Greer. The deal is to find one with the right rear end so you have acceleration. It has 265HP and will get up and go. It pulls strong, my pontoon boat on the back is not noticed.
I have the 18/70 Bridgestone tires as I hate to see a Jeep on tiny wheels. There is plenty of clearance for rolling down a boat ramp, and I get to sit up high.
On day one removed the rear seats as I have no need of that.
It still looks mint, and has relatively few miles as I don't drive as much these days.
It has been a great vehicle for me. I think this one will see me to my grave.
It fits me well.
I would not trade for a new one as they don't make them like this anymore.
