Mellusi

I’m watching the whisky game about 2 hrs behind. We never saw mellusi run like this. I don’t think psu d that bad. Do we have a bad approach to the running game, where guys can’t perform well? Even etn wasn’t that strong last season.
Serious responses only. And no I’m not a coot…

We saw flashes of Mellusi, he showed his speed in the long run against GT in 2019, but is more of a power back, he just got caught up in a really talented RB room at Clemson. We just run a completely different type of offense and have way different personnel, Wisconsin has a massive O-Line and recruits it differently than we do. ETN couldn't run last year due to the O-Line, not scheme--just look at his running the previous 3 years.

I can’t understand why we can’t get the best o linemen in the country. Best qb’s and wr’s for like 10 years now. Do line men hate pass blocking?

I think the next 3-4 year will really be telling and critical for our recruiting O-Line, I think we *COULD* turn the corner and start getting more of those studs. I would guess our lack of putting O-linemen in the NFL hurts on the recruiting trail, but we have really put together some impressive O-line classes the last 2 years, so if they develop, dominate and get drafted, we could be more of a destination school for them. Just my opinion though, but in my 37 years of watching our Tigers, the last few classes is the best collective group of o-linemen we've ever put together (on paper/recruiting).

For the same reason Ettiene didn’t run as well, no blocking.

It’s the o-line not Mellusi. Also he’s only averaging 3.9 per carry. His back is averaging a yard better. I can’t even fathom how many yards ETN would have had behind a Wisconsin line.

I think the Wisconsin Oline is just better....i don't think that can be overstated. Their skill guys and qb generally stink but they can run the dang ball for sure. Mellusi is the beneficiary of that. He's carried 30+ times.....that's a lot anywhere.

Last two drives of the game and he’s on the sideline. That tells me a lot.

I honestly haven’t been that impressed. A few times he was in open space and was taken down by on guy. He is good at hitting an open hole and making one cut. But there’s a reason he left.

Problem: Robbie Caldwell

Not sure why or how he’s still employed, maybe he has that Brad Brownell invincibility clause in his contract. But our problem is and has been (with the exception of 2016) our OLine.
Also, the RPO with Elliott is overused by an extremely large margin. And, yes, I would consider the repeated use of the RPO a bad approach to a run game.

The "O" in RPO means "option"! If Coach Elliott is calling run plays; but our talented QB see's an opportunity to pass it - then the ball gets pulled out for a pass. The OL can't assume they will do that so they should be committed to getting good run blocks going.
I think the reason our talented QB's have pulled it over the years is because they didn't like our chances on that running play on a certain side or at a certain player.
The RPO helps compensate for less than stellar OL really!
More strict straight up running plays can start being called when we have assembled the type of OL across the board including our depth that say; Bama, Wisconsin, OSU have. Until then - we do well doing it how we have to. BTW, Etienne broke how many records during the heavy RPO offense era? Last year was just a mess an anomaly really! I suspect you see a much more physical OL this season and moving forward.
**There was a time when the tempo game neutralized DL to the point you didn't necessarily have to have a dominant OL** Defenses have done a better job of adapting to tempo now though; so I see our coaches having to adapt and focus in more on those higher rated OL.
I forget the player but Dabo was talking about who all Clemson beat out to get: It was I believe Georgia State, Georgia Southern and FAU. For his OL I believe this staff believes more in development over bringing in guys who are higher rated. Sometimes those higher rated players may not necessarily work as hard as you'd like; especially at the OL spots. A 3 star player you develop and who RS and then sits before playing will know the system and be proud to be in a top tier program like Clemson. At least, that's how it seems to me they are doing it. You have the Mitch Hyatt's and the Jackson Carmen's - but that hasn't been the norm. Well published how Clemson doesn't get the best OL out of H.S. You know when schools are recruiting against Clemson for a OL prospect they are telling them: "you won't go pro if you go there"! That narrative has to change in my opinion and "it will change"!

When the game was on the line during the final two drives, Melusi wasn't in the game. Number 20 was. Did he get hurt or is he now the number 2 ?

I like Melissa, but his production faded fast in the second half (perhaps exhausted from 30 carries).

Run blockers. We’re all super worried about the running backs blocking ability though
