Spring break vacation ideas

My daughter is 9 and I am taking the week off for her spring break (first week of April) for just a daddy/daughter week. Looking for ideas on where to go that won’t be too expensive but would be fun and memorable. We live close to Atlanta and would prefer something we can drive to but open to flights if they are cheap. Thought about camping on Hartwell near Clemson but baseball is away the entire spring break. Any ideas from fellow tiger fans?

Glad to hear it! I took a long weekend with my daughter and rented a pontoon boat for a ride on Hartwell. I prefer Keowee truth be told.
Good luck finding accommodations of course. I am looking for a Daddy/Daughter vacation on the SC coast this summer.

I guess it depends on what your daughter likes. Maybe you could take her to the Furman at Clemson Softball game April 2nd, Greenville Zoo and other outdoor things she likes.

Took my oldest for spring break when he was 8, and he still talks about that trip.

Support this. Did it with my kids from Atlanta. Sub $300 direct round trip flights. Did a bus tour of the city, ate in Chinatown and little Italy. Went to a broadway show, carriage ride through Central Park, MoMA, Times Square. Plenty of other things to choose from.

We stayed in upper west side as it was quieter. Visited the natural history museum and Central Park daily. Hit a different spot each day including Empire State, statue liberty, intrepid, met, etc. Plus the variety of walking everywhere, grabbing donuts and pizza, public transportation, etc.
We’ll probably do it again in a few years.

Five hours from ATL and you can choose from Destin/30A, Ft. Walton Beach, Pensacola. All have lots of VRBOs and hotels.
Great sugar sand beaches and warm(ish), clear, beautiful water.
Only downside may be an abundance of raucous college heathen.

Stay in those places and you’ll avoid a lot of the college craziness. I’d definitely scratch Panama City off your list though for that reason!

YES! NYC may be unsafe right now. DC was great spring trip about 6 years ago. Most things free. Lots of safe walking. Good food and subway pretty clean. We stayed at a Hampton not far from subway line. Great. Get in touch with senator/congressman to arrange tour. Remember when Strom Thurmond guaranteed a White House pass.

NYC is much safer than Washington DC

It's also safer than Charleston, Columbia, and Greenville. SC has one of the highest violent crime rates of any state. The homicide rate in SC is almost 3x the homicide rate in NY.

Love these ideas. I had actually thought of DC and some of the gulf beaches but was interested in other ideas. I love the idea of NYC. My daughter is about as ADHD as they come (clinical diagnosis, not just dad saying that) so having an abundance of things to keep her busy is a great thing!

To each his own. Most of the big cities are crime ridden h holes. Head up to the mountains. Beaches are not a good option during spring break.

Flights from ATL were inexpensive. No passport. Spend only a day in Old San Juan and stay in AirBNB's around the island. It's not that pricey. You'll spend $2-3k easy in NYC. If you are going to spend that kind of momey, go somewhere warm.

NYC would be fun particularly for a young teen. Best easy trip, we took our granddaughter to Chattanooga for a long weekend. Their aquarium is better than atlanta in my opinion and not crowded. There's an IMAX on site for a break between the two aquarium buildings. We did the Ruby Falls caves were fun for another day. Then there's a riverboat cruise and a free walk through the chattanooga choo choo station to see the old trains. (Not sure if there's still a hotel to stay in there) Plenty of shops, restaurants and other tourist attractions in the area. We really enjoyed it.

You could camp or rent a condo. Plenty outdoor things to do there. Can rent a couple bike and ride around the island. Charleston attractions about an hour drive. Our 8 y/o loves going there.

Given the fact that she's 9, with a diagnosis of ADHD, both cities would provide plenty of activities and stimulation. Shopping, restaurants, museums, and other sites are plentiful in both cities. I know that neither is within reasonable driving distance, but flights from ATL to either aren't bad, and I'm sure flying would make the trip even more memorable for her.
You're a great day for doing something like this for her! You two will both cherish it forever.

DC would be a great choice. Fly into DCA and stay either close to DCA where you can take a hotel shuttle or pick a place that’s walkable from one of the Metro stops.
From museums and monuments to reaching out to your congressmen for a visit, there’s plenty to do. Also, as someone that rides DC’s Metro (subway system) often, it’s safe and clean.

How a young daughter would enjoy this trip but one of the best that I have made is a trip to the coast of Rhode Island. Newport is an amazing little village. The Gilded Age mansions on Bellevue are unbelievable. The “other half” sure lived a different style than this old peach orchard boy from Inman!
The entire coastline in New England is beautiful.
Every young person should visit Boston to see the real history of America .... before today’s politicians ruin it! Consider that if it is within your budget. But, go when the weatherman is cooperating!

We stayed at a hotel next to a metro stop in VA during a trip to DC. My kids love taking subway/metros/trains, so it was a treat to start each day.
