Is everything that's wrong with college football.
What a pitiful display of character.
Also, this was a terrible draw for Duke.

...between the athletes and the NIL collective.
The schools have nothing to do with it.

At which point Duke had to counter by offering another QB.

told Murphy he was going to be their QB. Why else would he leave for nthe obscurity of Oregon St? Even Duken is more prominent now

Murphy left knowing Duke was bringing in the qb from Tulane… hate that he couldn’t stay, but Manny said bye.

If I was dishing out this NIL $$$'s, which I am not ever going to just give 18yr old money to play, but all the money would be backloaded where the player gets a big portion after the completion of entire season. You sit out bowls or whatever, you forfeit the final payment, period.
You don't pay people for doing part of the job. Someone sells you a new roof and they tear the shingles off, don't replace them but want payment in full! What you gonna do, pay the contractor so they can go tear off shingles at another house? Heyll No!

That's easy to say, and I don't disagree, but good luck getting anyone to sign with you if you're the only team with those stipulations.

I think anyone who thinks it's poor character to choose the option that is better for yourself and your family is an idiot. Schools have no real loyalty to players. Duke brought in a $6 million QB to take his job. Fans also have little loyalty to a player. Players are right to go where it's best for them. I hate the new system, but you're stupid to think it's morally wrong for them to play within the system.

$8mil but over 2yrs. It's ok to want more money, but finish the freaking job you were paid for to start with. No finish, no final payment.

It’s my understanding that Murphy went to the Duke coaches and said he wanted more money to come back. The Duke staff told him he wasn’t worth what he was asking for so he threatened to leave.
That’s when Duke went and got Darian Mensah out of the portal and then Murphy had no choice but to leave if he wanted to start.
Again… this was my understanding and I could be wrong but if this is the case then Murphy did it to himself but trying to be greedy and get more than he was worth.
If that is what happened then honestly… good for the staff at Duke for not just bending over and giving in. They upgraded if you ask me. I saw Mensah play 3/4 times this year. Kid has a lot of talent.
Now the highest (unofficially) paid player in college football? I don’t think he’s that good but obviously Duke does so they paid him. But the kid does have real talent and again… I think Duke actually upgraded so good for them.
