Screaming at the football game without losing your voice
by,Brie Zeltner
The Cleveland Sun

Yelling strains the vocal cords, two small bands of muscle that form a V in the back of the throat and vibrate to make sound, says Dr. Arick Forrest, director of the voice and swallowing disorders clinic at the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center.

As with any muscle, overuse of vocal cords can cause inflammation and lead to soreness and pain.

Cold weather and the festive atmosphere of football games can make the situation worse, say Forrest and Dr. Nicole Maronian, director of the voice center at University Hospitals Case Medical Center.

Stay hydrated. The vocal cords need to stay moist to prevent hoarseness. The vocal cords are covered with a lining, like an arm in a sleeve. If the lining dries out, friction increases and irritation and swelling follow.

So staying well hydrated is key to keeping your voice. . Drink water frequently and take a break from the cold, dry air whenever you can.

Warm up. It may not be practical to do a full set of scales before you start screaming "De-fense!" at full volume, but you'll be doing yourself a favor if you start out slow. "Don't scream at the top of your lungs the first time out," he says. And saying words is harder on your voice than just making a single sound, so "start with a little bit softer sound and work your way up."

That's a pretty interesting read. However I will be screaming as loud as I can that first time on defense. In fact I'll be screaming as loud as I can every time on defense. My voice usually goes out, but I can still scream nonetheless.

Just be sure to warm up per-game. Suppose everyone was

Humming scales during per-game warm ups. That sure would be a different football environment.
