Mafah may be our best pure RB ever.

And no, I'm not being hyperbolic. At least in my lifetime. I'm 34.

I know, I know. CJ was electric. Travis put up gaudy stats that nobody in ACC history will probably ever surpass.

But Mafah has almost the exact specs of a RB you would create on Madden. He's patient. Has great vision. Can run away from defenders in the open field. Can juke people in a phone booth. Can truck defenders when he needs to get tough yards. Extremely reliable in terms of fumbling and very sturdy throughout the stretch of a long season. He's an absolutely horse at 230 pounds but can still run.

I am so excited to see how he continues to develop throughout the season. Love watching him play. He's a running back's running back, if that makes sense.

You age explains your Post. I can name a half dozen or more, that I would take over Mafah, only going back to ETN for one. I don't suppose you ever heard to Terry Allen...???

Did you read my post brother? Pure RB. As in translating to the NFL.

As much as I loved CJ and Travis, we are seeing that their game doesn't really translate to the NFL. They were more skill players and athletes rather than true workhorses.

Mafah has a higher ceiling than Priester, Jasmin, Harper, etc. imo.

What they do in the NFL is irrelevant to rating them as college RBs.

I've watched their highlights. Impressive. But I would still say Mafah has a higher ceiling going into the NFL.

The disrespect that James Davis gets is crazy.
Easily one of the most unheralded RBs we’ve had.
Super unappreciated what he did at a time when Clemson isn’t the Clemson that we know now.

Probably best power/combo back since Priester.***

Just off the top of my head.

Mafah might crack the top 10. He’s good.

Spiller was not a pure running back. He was the most electric, exciting player Clemson ever had, but his strength was entirely in being able to make big plays whether he was running, catching, returning punts, or returning kicks. I think he was the single most important player Clemson ever had (just his signing with us convinced other blue chips to do so after a huge drought of 5 stars). But best pure running back? No.

Mafah has far more NFL potential than Allen, Flowers, or Priester as a running back. If he were the back at Alabama or UGA, ESPN would be pumping him up like Henry, Gurley, or Chubb.

Etienne is tough. I think Etienne was probably better as a pure runner, even though he was also well-rounded.

All three of those (Allen, Flowers, Priester) were hurt in college, and never made it back to pre-injury status. I think Flowers was the best combination of size/speed we've ever seen at Clemson. 6'0" 230# and was timed at 4.36 in the 40.

This is who I was looking for. Mafah can break a long run. But he doesn’t have the initial quickness Davis had. Both probably same top end speed.

Probably throw Flagler in the mix.

The fact we don't even mention Kevin Mack and he had a great career speaks to how good we were at RB in the 80's.

We had a RB whose last name was Griffin who never started for us get drafted and make the Falcons roster.

Understandable, but from a pure RB perspective, I'm gonna take Mafah all day in a 3rd and 2 "GOT TO HAVE IT" in-a-phone-booth situation. That's kind of my litmus for a true RB.

I actually get what you are saying because I look at him the somewhat the same way. I thought Kenny Flowers was the best. Just loved his style of running thought he was going to be a great NFL player. You put Mafah with the Ravens and I can imagine the possibilities. But what you have to understand is that Mafah could go one to become an NFL hall of fame RB and people still wouldn't agree with you.

Yes, Madden. As in a skill set that could translate to an NFL career rather than gaudy college stats that get exposed at the highest level of football.

The best rb in Clemson history is Etienne, I don't think people realize how amazing he was in college. His OL was pedestrian at best and never imposing yet he could find a sliver of daylight between the tackles and come darting out for 60+ yards or he could beat everyone around the edge.

CJ was the most exciting bc EVERYTHING ran through him during his time at Clemson and he was the first explosive back in a long long time.

I can't speak on the others bc while I watched some of them I was too young to remember them.

to get you the yardage you needed, was Marvin Sims. Without looking to check, I believe he never actually lost yardage on a run. 3rd and 3? No worries. 4th and 2? I got this!

Lots of good running backs listed but no mention of Kevin Mack?? I know he was before a lot of y’all’s time but he was a great back when we ran the ball a lot more. He did very well at Cleveland until the drugs became an issue for him.
