Made this for my Father-In-Law for Father's Day. Thoughts?
May 31, 2016, 10:49 AM
|
|
My father-in-law just moved into a new house and was asking me if I knew where to get some Clemson posters for his man cave. I decided to make him something instead, and this is the result. It is 24"x36" and all cuts were made with jig and scrolls saws. I think it will probably hang above his couch.
Thoughts? I was pretty pleased with how it turned out.

It is staying just like that. I thought briefly about a light coat of orange, but I like it as is.

I think it's great as is, but now has me curious, especially if you resold them, what it would look like with orange stain on the paw. Perhaps even a variation with purple stain on the background too.
Amazing work!

I love it man, stellar jig & scroll saw work (that couldn't have been easy!).
General Finishes makes an amazing water-based orange dye if you decide to color the paw itself. It would look brilliant in my opinion. What will you be using to finish it? Will it be kept indoors? Sweet job man.

Yeah, not the easiest thing I have ever done, but hopefully it will be worth it!
I need to check out that dye. Never used anything like that before. Typically I just do a matte poly or something similar. It will be indoors for sure.

Thanks so much! The white wood is from an old barn I took down close to Furman in Greenville, SC. Love using the stuff, but it can be tough with the shape of the paw!

Personally I think that a person has to have a passion for woodworking before they can take a scroll saw and do amazing work as it looks like you have done with that piece. Your father in law is lucky to have a son in law that would spend that much time on him. I hope that he understands that the best part of the gift is in the craftsmanship. You don't go out and buy a gift as that in a store. Good job, and for God's sake, don't put any paint on that work. A good linseed oil for longevity, hand buff it a little, and it's good to go. But you know that already!!!

Also would look great in orange. Could mix orange paint with water to get a light bit of orange on it. The dyes would be great too.

I did that about 14 years ago but from what I remember it did alright.
Im currently not using that case. It is in storage awaiting my little mans first Computer (He is about to turn 1).
Edit: Also for fellow computer nerds I realize that is cord hell in that case. The PSU died shortly before I was set to upgrade. I just threw that old one in to get me to that point. Didnt care about cord management due to it all coming out soon anyway.

From first hand knowledge Hawk, friends and family don't recognize labor as a part of the deal. For some crazy reason if you're skilled at a craft that friends and family want, they don't want to hear sh!t about no labor, and you're dead wrong if they do!!!

Amazing work! I'm starting to get into woodworking on the side and I love it.
If you aren't already, you should put some of your work on etsy. I sell team logo bottle openers on there and I'm starting to get really busy. For the first month I was getting 1 sale a day, but now I am getting 3-5. Considering I have a full time job as well, I am slammed all the time. I am definitely not even close to your level at this point, but I hope to be someday.

Looks great. I'm sure he'd like it regardless of how you finished it. I prefer the natural wood look myself. If you dont paint it and put a varnish on it I'd make sure the one you choose isn't going to pice you a yellow tint (a lot of them do).
My T-net icon/logo is the Clemson seal I made using a scroll saw.
