A little surprised. UNC usually doesn’t care enough about football to do something like that this early in the season.

That's a shocker. Seems they would let him play the season out just out of respect for what he's done.

If so, now there are only 2 active coaches that have won the national championship.

An emotional coach Mack Brown told the North Carolina football team that he was walking away from the job after the Tar Heels' embarrassing 70-50 loss to James Madison on Saturday at Kenan Stadium, multiple sources close to the situation have told Inside Carolina. Hours later, another source close to the situation emphasized that the 73-year-old College Football Hall of Famer, who long has taken losses hard in their immediate aftermath, isn't resigning or quitting his coaching position.
"He will be in the office tomorrow and getting back to work," that source said Saturday night. "Going in and having a normal Sunday."

Collins was a clown at GT Chizik was a clown at Auburn, UNC has had some nice players on offense during Macks tenure but the defense has been a consistent dumpster fire, both with def cord he chose and good players transferring out. (an this is where isiah cambell is choosing to go, btw i dont want him back)
Having said that UNC was really stupid to give a very old man a contract extension, both saban and mack in my opinion both knew they would resign soon anyway......literally free millions, was always there goal even though they wont admit it.

My guess is the staff wasn't buying into the marketing ploy bringing Mack was, ultimately.
Love Mack, but he got paid for his "role."
Time then ran out.

Tap the breaks. Mack could very well step down but there’s just nothing but rumors at this point. But I will say Mack is one of the old school coaches who cares deeply about his players , coaches, and coaching peers at other schools. I think this new world of transfer portal and NIL is no longer the place for him. That’s sad to me but I understand it. It’s really not the place for me as a fan anymore either.

Mack seems like a decent man, although I don’t buy into all of his Andy Griffith schtick of being selfless and gentle. I do believe him when he complains about the evils of NIL / portal related tampering, same as Dabo. Both say they won’t tamper, although both will use the portal as long as tampering isn’t required to get the player. (IMO, the willingness to tamper is directly proportional to success in obtaining players via the portal.)
Brown’s failures are from poor assistant coaches (who are nearly always excellent recruiters but simultaneously poor position coaches); something terribly wrong with their strength, conditioning, & nutrition programs; and unconditional fulfillment of recruiting promises.
Two glaring examples: CBs - when former UNC superstar CB Dre Bly was UNC’s CB coach as recently as 2022, their CBs were terrible. Just terrible, despite recruiting success (I.e., if Rivals and 247 ratings mean anything). Mack kept Bly on his staff too long, given the terrible performance of the CBs within 2 years of being hired by Mack in 2018, and then the decline was evident. Bly apparently has the motivational aspects of coaching down, as he was hired by Detroit Lions after finally getting canned by Brown. But as for teaching players how to play CB, he was abysmal if the standard is how well the college CBs under his tutelage played.
DL - OK, I’ll admit to being hung up in Travis Shaw, the former #1 DL recruit in the nation (as far as Rivals ratings). Shaw immediately assumed the proportions of the Michelin Man in his true FR year, but nevertheless played extensively. He could barely move, presumably from being exhausted pre-game activities of chasing down donuts. Travis Shaw still stinks. He had to be playing due to recruiting promises; I guess Brown was afraid that cracking the whip would mean Shaw might transfer. So I guess Brown crossed his fingers and hoped that Shaw would turn his own light on … and kept playing him. Shaw has improved from being abysmal all the way up to average, now that he is in his Junior year.
UNC needs to start over.

I don’t disagree with any of what you said. It’s definitely time to start over. I honestly don’t know if the next coach will change much however. I think UNC will struggle even more in the NIL / transfer era. That plus lack of a real football culture is just not a winning combination. It does sadden me to see Mack end his career this way. I was a grad assistant baseball coach there during Mack’s first stint at UNC. I got to know him and I can promise you he is one of the most decent and genuine human beings you could ever meet. That “good guy” image you see on tv is real. It’s who he is.

I remember him doing something similar after OU trucked UT in the Cotton Bowl a while back. Just embarrassed the Longhorns (these two teams can, will and sometimes do run the score up on one another). This cat steps up to the mic and issues this sappy mea culpa that, contrary to his intentions, only made the moment worse.

If that is true, that will mean only Dabo and Kirby are active D1 coaches that have won a national championship.
